The shadows that the hand in motion creates are first photographed. Then, they are carved out of a 3D surface, creating a sculpture that performs, and is sculpted by, the actions of the fingers, wrists, and palms: bending, compressing, creasing, curving, expanding, pinching, and pulling.

Chicago’s Newberry Library is plaqued by an insular, windowless extension called the “Stacks.” By disrupting the ground plane and distorting existing conditions through explicit and implied solids, a second addition opens up the library, not only spatially but also programatically. It attracts unanticipated users (musicians, theater-goers, goodies) to explore

the constantly-changing landscape. The process of creating spaces is defined by three structural components: frame, skin, and base.4

The Court of Public Opinion

January-April 2016

Justice is a spectacle consisting of tools of conviction. Mediating the “truth” outside of the courtroom leads to a public perception that may run counter to the truth created in the court-room. Celebrities – both heroes and villains – spawn out of the media circus that is created. As an abstract concept, the truth may not exist but as a tool, it can be molded to fit narratives

and agendas. Thus, the courthouse consists of 2 sub-typologies in constant tension: the areas where truth is created, and those where the truth is mediated. To show their theatrical nature and the disparate perspectives of reality is to speak to the real truth of the justice system. 8

This take on a ski slope uses various boolean pairs to create an environment that overcomes the tension between landscape and building. Skiers traverse over, under, around, and through the half pipe, slopes, and lodge. The transition from the natural forms of the mountainside to the angularity of the man-made cantilever is seamless.

Many shops in Mumbai are barely the size of a closet. Some have been occupied by stencil-makers, tailors, travel agents, and tea vendors for generations. What makes these shops interesting is not only their sizes, but also their positions - stacked atop one another. The first level is often partially buried, with only a small portal above-ground where the

shopkeeper’s eyeline is ankle-level, not eye-level. This situation is a product of the incredible density of one of the world’s fastest-growing cities.13

Grids

February-March 2015

Museum Board/Construction Paper

Rock-climbing wall sand skate parks collectively involve motion, pracariousness, and the threat of collusion. Here, two grids have collided to produce such a programmatic and conceptual center, whose pattern continues from ground to sky. These grids create various apertures, ranging from over 6,000 windows to oversized entryways of varied translu-

cency. In conjunction with woefully sharp angles and oversized cantilevers, these grids as manifested on the ground also add to a sense of danger - both real and imagined.14

Shipping Crate House

February 2015

Sketchup-Rhino-Photoshop

Shipping crate houses are popular design concepts, but present a multitude of unexpected economic, construction, and upkeep issues. This design calls for the same dimensions and form, but instead uses prefabricated concrete panels and bamboo furniture to accomplish the sustainable and economic goals of a shipping crate house.

Salk Institute

Bristol-Graphite

Louis Kahn’s Salk Institute is defined by more than its exterior. Its use of concrete and travertine, water features, and light wells combine ground, sea, and sky to form a restoring and spacious research environment. Highlighting certain features through selected plans, sections, and axonometrics imparts further understanding of this campus.
