S H I P S ' LISTS OF LOCHABER IMMIGRANTS

' The ships' lists for the three ships, the FriPnL the H e h a n d the Janeare located in the Archibald 'Mur- laggan' McMillan Papers, National Archives of Canada (NA), MG 24 I 183. These lists form one of the key documents for a study of the Lochaber migration.

Originally we had thought to publish a reproduc- tion of the original ship lists that are part of the Archibald McMillan papers. Because the writing is so faded, it was decided to do a new transcription from the primary source document. We have reproduced one page so that the reader may see the original. It is interesting to note that the families came from all parts of Lochaber - Laddy, Livisie, Munergy and many other places noted in the lists. The husband- wife-children groups are obvious but it is more diffi-cult to tell about the rest. Many groups would be sis- ter-brother combinations, or just close friends. By all accounts they had a much better time at sea than was

the lot of most emigrants. Judging by Archibald's concerns as expressed in his writings, it seems likely that he was responsible for seeing to their welfare at sea and on land. The logistics of assembling so many people in one place (Fort William) on a certain date must have been formidable. Roads and communica- tions were limited.

The initial list of passengers (numbers I to 299) boarded in Fort mlliam. The addendum at the end of the list as published below is a list of passengers added by Somerled MacMillan in his &one Lochaber, and seems to indude names of people who boarded the ships in Saltcoats on the Clyde River, the last stop before the Atlantic crossing. Archibald 'Murlaggan' McMillan, his wife and family are included in this second list. Over a period of several weeks before go-ing south, McMillan had enlisted over 250 passengers. At number 254 (John McMillan), the handwriting changes, signalling a second compiler. Archibald McMillan apparently had departed Fort William for Glasgow in order to stock up on provisions and wa- ter. He, his wife and family then boarded one of the ships at Saltcoats.

MarDonell and Mardonald are anglicized variants of the Gaelic word Dhomniullfor all those bearing the name of clan Donald. It was the compiler of the origi- nal list who made the choice. Other lists from this period show that some writers consistently used 'Mc' as opposed to 'Mac' while others employed 'Donell' as opposed to 'Donald.'The stress is on the first sylla- ble in Gaelic. However one notable exception occurs in Catholic Jacobite families where the second lan- guage was French and the stress on the last syllable would he employed as in French. The few instances of the spelling 'McDonald' in this list are cases where the line was crowded and the abbreviation 'McDon:d' is employed. The single case which is spelled out as such is entry 284 (Don: McDonald), which is in a dif- ferent hand. In other words, the spelling variants are not important - they are all simply dhomniull in the Gaelic.

The compilers of the 1802 list wrote with a fine clear hand and there is rarely an ambiguity in the spelling. A case in point is Lerk although most Eng- lish-speakers use the spelling Leek, the Gaelic pronun- ciation is better represented as Lerk as the list com- piler has done.

Broy:ras an abbreviation for Brother is an instance of the old conventionof representing the diphthong 'th' by the old Anglo-Saxon letter thorn for which English typographers usually substituted the roman letter 'y.' Readers of the time would know by context and pronounce the word correctly, reading 'ye' as 'thee', for instance.

Strike-outs in the lists are as they appear in the original (for example number 10).The line numbers occur in the original and are a running tally of the number of adult passengers.
