“I am delighted with the start of the school year

and what the students and staff have

accomplished so far. I have been overwhelmed

with the kind welcome to the School and into our

extended community. With that, I’d like to say a

thank you to everyone for their friendly welcome

and support in my transition to this School.”

“Last term was very busy, and the children have settled into their daily routines

confidently. They have visited other small schools in the area for shared learning

days and celebrated Easter. The children made Easter hats and invited the

Preschool students for an Easter egg hunt. We had a great turn out for the Anzac

March in Crookwell. We also held had our own Anzac assembly at the school. I am

proud of the way the students conducted themselves in such a respectful

manner.

During the Easter holidays the school grounds have had some works completed

with the removal and pruning of the larger trees and hedges. The students in

Years 4 and 6 have sat the Numeracy and Literacy check in assessment and

Naplan will be held for Years 3 and 5 starting on May 11th.

The garden beds throughout the grounds are being weeded, trimmed, and

mulched with the veg patch being planted out with winter veg seeds harvest. The

‘patch to plate’ cooking program is a highlight of the weekly curriculum as the

students help harvest, prepare, and cook the produce fresh from the garden. Our

new Gardener/General Assistant Mrs. Bronwyn Haynes has cleared out the beds

and prepared them for a bumper winter growing season.

We are looking forward to a busy term two and will keep our readers informed

with what is coming up.”

• The students were in the kitchen again making zucchini slice and flatbreads for a tasty lunch.

Principal, Mr Martin, joined in the lovely lunch with the students. The ‘Patch to Plate’

program runs every Thursday morning, and the students use whatever is available to harvest

from the veg patch plus the lovely fresh eggs the chickens lay.

During the recent school holidays the

school grounds have had a tidy up with

the help of Ashton’s Tree Services. Our

Principal also spent many hours at the

school helping with the massive clean-

up. As a result, the gardens around the

schoolhouse and throughout the school

are now being brought back at their best.

The schoolhouse is available for hire and

features a kitchen, heating and cooling,

large well-lit rooms and offers wheelchair

friendly access. The building would be

ideal for office spaces, an artist’s retreat,

health hub and much more. Please

The poem below is contributed by Nigel Wong who attended the school between 1987-1993. He has fond memories of the smaller community and going to school whilst growing up in Laggan. Country schools differ from their city cousins, In the 1980’s the gap was wide. We enjoyed a simpler life in our school, Ours built on trust and pride. In a city school, you were one of hundreds, your voice often left unheard. Life in Laggan was safe and worry free, Your mates gave you their word. We were a close knit little bunch, there were about 60 of us back then. No iPhones, no social media, or superficial things, I would love to have that time again. In a small school, you were familiar to all around, You were connected to your teachers and friends. You saw them in town, at the pub or weekend sport, Those connections could never end. Small schools didn’t always have canteens, No shops or traffic cops. You had what was needed - a sense of belonging, and if lucky, a sheltered bus stop.

I loved having my grandparents over the fence, I loved living on a farm. The connectedness of the community abroad, Really brings a sense of calm. My bus driver was my grandfather, My teacher lived nearby too. My classmates also on farms nearby, a community with no-one you never knew. As I grew older, I had to make choices, I found myself seeing city sights. From Laggan, to Orange and eventually Canberra, a bush boy can’t survive on city lights. At 40, I know those from little schools, You don’t have to ask, you just know. We are a special kind us country folk, The bush, we cannot forgo. I have since moved back to country life, The city cannot contain me any longer. Moving to Binalong is something I had to do, For me to grow further and stronger. Laggan will always remain close to me, Its energy and connections set in stone. It is a place with a heart and soul to admire, It is the place I will always call home. Nigel Wong
