PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,
Welcome to another very exciting and information packed newsletter! As usual so many
marvellous things have occurred at our wonderful school over the past fortnight such as:
School Assemblies
It has been wonderful to see so many parents attend our school assemblies. We really do try
to make them as informative and entertaining as possible so everyone has the opportunity to
enjoy them. As you would be aware, the assemblies are run and organised by the children
which makes it even more exciting. In order to acknowledge the many languages which
make up our school community, last year we said “Good Morning” in a different language
every week. This year we have decided to focus on the cultural festivals of some of our
school community groups and last week Mrs Sia (and a number of students) provided us
with an overview of the Chinese New Year. The children explained the significance of this
celebration and also entertained us with some songs and dances. Congratulations to Mrs Sia
and the children involved as your presentation was wonderful and set an extremely high
benchmark for others to follow. The other cultural festivals we will present are: Eid, Diwali,
Sinhala and Tamil New Year and Christmas. If you can think of any others please let me
know.
Preps are now Full Time
This week our preps have attended school full time staying each day until 3.30pm. They
have done a marvellous job and have certainly settled in very well. I would like to remind
parents that as each week passes by the children will begin to feel more comfortable and
truly connected to their new surroundings. However there may be days when all seems a
little too much and the children may become teary or unsettled. Please be patient and always
try to be positive and encouraging and remind them that you will be there at the end of every
day to greet them!
Twilight Sports A reminder that our annual Twilight Sports are to be held next Thursday evening from 5 p.m. I hope all families are
able to attend and participate in the variety of activities. A sincere thank you to Kylie Bailey and Darren McDonald
for all of the work they have undertaken to organise the activities and to the Fundraising Committee for organising
the BBQ etc. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Twilight Sports ready to participate in various events!
Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to Aaliya and Michael (both Year 6) for the wonderful effort in the recent Syndal District
swimming carnival. Aaliya placed 1st in freestyle and 2
nd in breaststroke which qualifies her for the next meet
which is the zone final. Michael placed 3rd
in freestyle which is also terrific however only the children who place 1st
or 2nd
qualify for the next round. Well done, we are all so proud of both of you!
Uniform: it has been absolutely wonderful to see every student in full school uniform so far this year and a sincere
thank you to all parents for ensuring this occurs. As everyone would be aware, a uniform provides a sense of
belonging and pride in our school; from a parents point of view, it certainly makes selecting what to wear a great
deal easier. A reminder that all students are required to wear their sun-smart school hat at all times this term and for
the first few weeks of Term Two.
School Council Update – over the past few weeks we have undertaken the annual School Council elections
process and I am very pleased to announce the membership of our 2012 School Council is as follows:
Parent Representatives: Mirini Lang, Paul Van Den Bergen, Jaymee Nguyen, Selvam Muthukrishna, Alan
Williams, Bala Siva, Chandra Senanayaka, Thilanga Jayasuriya, Hetal Mistry, Daljinder Singh, Leena Iyer, Dima
El-Sukkari
Staff Representative: Pauline Stove, Darren McDonald, Nicole Dale, Jacinta Evans and myself.
For those who may not be aware, the School Council members are the school community‟s representatives and I
strongly encourage everyone to become familiar with them so you can have any concerns or issues brought to
School Council. I also take this opportunity to remind everyone of the School Council Noticeboard which is
located on the external wall near the main school doors. The board contains copies of minutes and reports as
presented at School Council meetings.
Extra-Curricular Programs Update
Extracurricular programs are a wonderful way of children reinforcing, expanding and learning new skills. As we
have a magnitude of extracurricular programs at our school I will highlight one in each newsletter. This fortnight I
would like to commence with our latest addition the after school Chinese Art (Drawing) Classes. We commenced
this program last Wednesday with 13 children from Years Prep to Six participating and wow, the art teachers
(Yaping and Di) and I were amazed at the extremely high level of artistic talent demonstrated by the children.
Below are a few photographs of the children at work and some of their very creative pieces – I hope you enjoy
them and congratulations to the children involved. If your child would like to participate please see Mr McDonald
or I at school or contact Yaping on: Office: 9815 0817 Mobile: 0417 104 975

Car Park Redevelopment
As everyone would be aware, this year we aim to redevelop the school car park in order to make it more user
friendly for parents and for it to be used for sporting purposes during the day by the children. At this stage we have
received the initial plans and recently we met with an arborist who has determined that all of the trees in the gravel
section of the car park will unfortunately have to be removed. This is because the amount of soil needing to be
extracted is excessive and the trees may not survive hence causing safety issues and concerns. It is a real pity that
the trees will need to be removed however, as part of the scope of works, they will be replaced. At this stage I am
not aware of when the works will commence but will keep everyone informed.
Getting to Know You Interviews - Parent Teacher Interviews
Thank you to the families who were able to attend the „Getting To Know You‟ interviews last week. The staff are
very appreciative of the time that parents have given to these meetings and truly believe that they have gained a
great deal from the sessions. This type of meeting strengthens the partnerships that we develop each year. If you
were unable to attend please contact your child‟s teacher and make an alternative time to meet. I must congratulate
our staff for their dedication and commitment to the students at GWPS, I am extremely proud of the staff and the
time and effort they give to providing the very best learning environment for our children.
Book Donations
A sincere thank you to the De Silva family for their very kind
donation of additional books for our school library. Dineth (Year
1) and Diyon (Year 2) decided to donate the books which is terrific
and extremely appreciated by everyone at our school. Opposite is a
photograph of the boys with the books they donated – thank you
the De Silva family!
School Banking Program
Our school banking program continues to go from strength to
strength which is extremely pleasing. Last Wednesday evening our
local Commonwealth Bank branch held an open night in order to
assist families to open a school banking account. Unfortunately I was unable to attend as we had Parent/Teacher
Interviews, however according to an e-mail from Vicky (our banking representative) and some of the families I
spoke to, it was a very successful evening. A sincere thank you to those families who did attend and also to the
Commonwealth Bank of Glen Waverley for this family friendly initiative. We look forward to hearing how many
deposits are made by the new members of our school banking program – below is a photograph from last
Wednesday night!
The Email from Vicky: Last night was so enjoyable and successful in terms of parents opening their children’s accounts with ease and comfort and the kids having a fun time in the bank after hours! We had 14 families attend with their children who were entertained by Spen and Donna with craft and colouring activities while Mum and Dad opened school banking accounts for their children. Refreshments were also provided. 15 accounts were opened and parents commented on how easy it was to come after doors closed to organise banking.

Year 5/6 Learning Reflections and Global Education Unit of Work
The children in Years 5 and 6 have been studying a Global Education unit titled, “Helping Our World -
We can change the world!” where they are learning about children‟s rights around the world and also how fair
trade is impacting on the global economy. Below are some of the children‟s reflections of what they have learnt
thus far:
Ani (6ND) Fair trade chocolate is when the cocoa farmers are paid as per what they did (are entitled to). It is also
when factory workers are given a good salary as well. Only Ghana, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in
Africa have fair trade. In America only Nicaragua, Dominion Republic and Peru have fair trade. In Asia only
Malaysia has fair trade. Children‟s right portal is a website that explains the rights of children. They show a map in
which countries are coloured black – bad children‟s rights, green – good children‟s rights, red and yellow are in the
middle. It also explains the reasons why countries are in that situation.
Ethan (6ND) I learnt many things about children‟s rights. I learnt that there are many people in the world and each
live in different countries. Millions of people die from diseases like dehydration. I hope that I can help them.
James (6ND) When studying and learning about Fair Trade, I thought, what if all children in the world were made
to work, what will happen? Then nobody can be a doctor, lawyer, engineer and society will go back like many
years ago. The world will be like 3,000 years ago when people lived in a forest!
Hylee (6ND) When we learnt about children‟s rights, we learnt that children have the right to be loved, be cared
for, to be heard etc. We went on the children‟s rights portal and studied about children in other countries – how
poor and rich they are. We also had electives about children‟s rights and I went into Miss Barnett‟s class and
watched clips of children in other countries. Most of them were so poor, one of them had to live in water so dirty
that animals step in and drink from!
Clearly this unit is having an impact on the children as they learn about the rest of the world – how the simple
commodity of chocolate is used to empower and increase the wealth of a select few and how children live and
survive in various countries. As Principal and an educationalist, I am extremely proud of the units the children are
studying as we are continually go beyond mere facts and exploring real life global issues which are engaging,
challenging and thought provoking. I hope the families who have a child in Year 5 or 6, spend some time
discussing these issues and, if time allows, conduct some family research
Curriculum Day and Long Weekend
A reminder that tomorrow (Friday 9th March) is a Curriculum Day for our school and the children are not required
to attend. The staff will spend the day analysing some of our student achievement data and also develop programs
in English, Maths and Computer Education. The children are also not required to school next Monday (12th March)
as it is the Labour Day public holiday. I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend!

Parent / Teacher Get to Know You Interviews went very well with teachers commenting on how much they had learned from parents about their students. It was equally great to receive feedback from parents that their children had happily settled into their new class. Parents are invited to make contact with teachers at any time, especially if any concerns arise. Teachers will also telephone parents if they require a meeting. District Swimming was held at on Friday 28th February at Huntingtower School. It was a great experience for the three competitors from GWPS. The students competing this year were Aaliya, Michael and Stephanie from Year 6. These students swam in a determined manner and achieved some outstanding results. They competed enthusiastically, with great spirit and camaraderie, with Aaliya qualifying for zone in freestyle. Well done to these three students on a great effort! I would like to say a big thank-you to Amber Fernandes for transporting students to and from the event. Newsletter Online This year our preferred method of sending newsletters home is via our website. Many families are taking up the offer to register on our school website to receive a digital copy of our newsletter. We encourage everyone to register by logging on to our website www.glenps.vic.edu.au and subscribing before the end of Term 1. Reading at Glen Waverley Primary School 2012 is the National Year of Reading and our aim is to have all GWPS students to be involved in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge. This involves students reading books from the challenge list which are available from the school library or can be brought from home. If in Prep, Year 1 or Year 2 books can be read by the student or with someone else, for example, a parent, teacher, brother or sister, classmate, buddy or friend. They can read the book to the student if they are just learning to read. Certificates will be received by students who complete the challenge. If you would like more information on either the Premiers‘Reading Challenge or The National Year of Reading please see the links below. www.education.vic.gov.au/prc www.love2read.org.au/index.cfm We would like everyone to take up the challenge during this National Year of Reading.
