RESPECT – DOING YOUR BEST – FAIR GO – GENEROSITY Term 3, Week 4, 2020 Principal’s Report Last week principals across the country in all sectors were recognized for their contribution to education. It was nice to be acknowledged but it also made me reflect on the privilege it is to be a principal, and I am especially proud to be principal of Mt Gambier North PS. A lot goes into making a great school but most importantly it is that students have a sense of pride in their school. To build that pride, there needs to be a sense of belonging, high expectations and respect across the board. This is what we aim for and we work hard to support students meet these goals. Last Friday was a great example. Students earnt the right to attend the district basketball day and performed admirably. Most importantly, they represented the school with pride, enthusiasm and positive behavior that many others not connected to the school commented on. These are proud moments. Pupil Free Day In order to further develop teacher practice to improve student outcomes, we will be having a teacher Professional Development on Monday 31 st August, which will be a Pupil Free Day. These professional learning days are a requirement from the department to support teacher development in priority areas of the curriculum. This training will be focus on writing, which hopefully you will see transfer to your child’s learning throughout the rest of the year. Book Week Normally Book Week is in Term 3, but this year it will be held in Term 4. These later dates will apply in 2020 only, recognising the exceptional circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. From 2021, the CBCA expects that the annual Book of the Year Awards and CBCA Book Week will revert to their normal schedule of the Awards announced on the third Friday in August, with CBCA Book Week commencing the following day. At this stage Book Week may be held between 17-23 October. More information regarding Book Week to follow.

Principal’s Day On Friday 7 August we recognised National Principal’s Day. The day appreciates the vital role principals like Mr Harmer play in achieving excellence in teaching and learning in schools.

This year it is especially important to acknowledge the contributions that principals have made in delivering education in difficult circumstances. A big thank you to Mr Harmer and all his hard work!

Science Week

National Science Week Next week is National Science Week from the 15th to the 23rd August. We will be hosting science activities in the gym in week 5 on Tuesday, 18th August from 9.00am – 11.30am. The theme this year is the Deep Blue Ocean and saving sea animals from plastic rubbish. It will be a great opportunity for students to observe and learn from hands on activities. Students from 6/7 will perform the different range of experiments for the whole school.

Science Learning As part of our science inquiry this term, Room 20 have been learning about the states of matter. We have explored different states of matter by performing different experiments. We discovered that air takes up space and learnt about the different phases that matter goes through. Here are some of the examples of what we did….

What’s on display

SAPSASA Basketball On Friday the 7th of August we took one girls’ team and 2 boys’ teams to the Icehouse Basketball Stadium. What a great bunch of students! All the students played hard and demonstrated great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. A huge thank you to Mrs Badenoch who scored 15 games of basketball for the day and to Kyle Tipene for coaching. As a school we should feel very proud of the way our teams played and represented us. All 3 teams came away with some great wins and I had some parents from others schools commenting on how much they enjoyed watching our teams play because of our enthusiasm. Well done!
