The word Mahabaleshwar in Sanskrit comprises of two words meaning The Mighty (Mahabal-) and God (Eshwar) and thus hints the sanctity and holiness of the Lord Mahadev alias Lord Shankar in association with Mahabaleshwar.

History does not read Mahabaleshwar deep down the past, but it is said that Kshetra-Mahabaleshwar or Old-Mahabaleshwar as it is known today was the province dwelt by the Shrikes.

Kshetra Mahabaleshwar is well known for two significant reasons. Firstly it is the origin of five major rivers in Maharashtra viz. The Krishna, Venna, Savitri, Koyna & Gayatri. There is also a very strong believe that the River Bhagarathi (Ganga) comes here once every sixty & the river Sarasvati once in every 12 years to meet their sister rivers. The

21

Page 21: Parle industrial training report

Modi Institute of Technology , Kota (Rajasthan)other reason of the significance of Mahabaleshwar down the prehistoric times is the tale of two very fierce demons namely Mahabali and Atibali had been harassing the Brahmins at Kshetra-Mahabaleshwar where these Brahmins were engaged in holy sacrifices and rituals, which these two fierce demons kept obstructing. The Brahmins then, who prayed to the Gods, for assistance in the safe conduct of these rituals and protection from the demon brothers.

Panchgani

Elevation 1305 above sea level and bearing an area of 6 sq. km located 18 km east of Mahabaleshwar on Mahabaleshwar Wai road on leeward side. It escapes the heavy rain and fog. It is also shielded from the east wind by a larger extend of table-land. The magnificient scenery of Krishna Valley from east to west with its numerous hamlets, cultivated fields and pictures view of the Dhom Dam can be seen along the whole northern ridge of the mountain. The climate is cool, salubrious and comparatively dry. The total yearly rainfall here is about 2,000 mm, which is one third of Mahabaleshwar.

Panchgani is well known for its residential schools and sanitoriums. The administration is handled by the local municipality since 1910. The population is approximately 12,000.

All season hill station is called ‘Switzerland of India’. It is about 18 Km from Mahabaleshwar on Wai road. It is situated to the lee of Mahabaleshwar and being 200 ft lower, it escapes the heavy rain and fog of the outer range valley to the north and south.

22.Market strategy

Mapro Foods, the Mahabaleshwar-based makers of squashes, jams and confectioneries is looking for a pan-national presence for its products. The 25-year-old brand, primarily known in the

western region, is targeting the northern and southern regions of the country.

28

Page 28: Parle industrial training report

Modi Institute of Technology , Kota (Rajasthan)

Under this, 16 cities in the north and 10 cities in the south will soon start stocking Mapro brand products.

Mapro Foods CEO Mayur Vora told FE that the focus is now on the northern and southern regions after establishing a presence in cities like Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. The strategy adopted by the company is to focus on cities offering high potential. That is why it is more bullish on its foray into the northern and southern

regions rather than penetrate into the hinterland of Maharashtra.

“In the north, we are beginning with Delhi and will subsequently take our products to cities like Kanpur, Lucknow and those in Punjab. The foray in the southern market will begin in six months, where initially we are targeting 10 cities,” Mr Vora said.

The company is in the process of establishing a sales force to monitor the spread in these regions. The strategy is to have a single distributor for each city to ensure product placement in the supermarkets, shopping malls, dryfruit shops and general grocery stores. In order to track the movement of products from the distributor to the retailer, Mapro is putting in place an online module which will enable the sales force to feed daily sales trends and figures.

“A single distributor for the city and its vicinity enables us to exercise better control over the inventory and also ensures better accountability,” Mr Vora added.

On brand-building activities, Mr Vora said the company will concentrate on point-of-sales promotion rather than embark on a

29

Page 29: Parle industrial training report

Modi Institute of Technology , Kota (Rajasthan)grandiose brand-building activity involving print and electronic media.

He said Mapro as a brand was small to sustain a large-scale media blitz. That is why the initiatives have been restricted to point-of-sale promos.

Since Mahabaleshwar is a premier hill station in Maharashtra, attracting tourists by the thousands, brand-building is conducted through free tasting counters for jams, crushes, syrups, squashes and confectionery, he added.

“Footfalls at our factory premises enables us to promote our brand through word-of-mouth which to a large extent has been instrumental in our success in the western region,” Mr Vora said.

Mapro Foods has a turnover of Rs 10 crore and is looking at a 50 per cent growth annually, according...
