Dear Parishioners, Jesus is Alive! Did you ever wonder how the disciples felt when they realized Jesus had risen from the dead? Their world went from hopelessness to tremendous joy. Some of the disciples literally ran to tell the others. You can be sure there were many smiles in the room when Jesus appeared to them. Yet, that joy didn’t come simply because they heard the news. No, it came only after they believed that Jesus was really alive. You may recall the story of Thomas who told the other disciples he wouldn’t believe until he touched the marks in his hands and feet and put his hand into his side. When Thomas saw Jesus, his response was nothing short of incredulous joy. Even after Jesus’ ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit, the disciples continued to gather and celebrate all that had happened. Jesus was alive! It wasn’t just something they were told. It was something they experienced and believed. Sometimes I can’t help but wonder if Christians today really believe it. Fewer people are coming to Mass on a regular basis. They don’t understand why it is important. This is what people tell me. Many who come don’t want to be there. They arrive at the last minute and leave after communion. Some play with their phones or complain about the music or the behavior of others. Others come simply because church law demands it. Perhaps we have forgotten what Jesus gave us. Perhaps we have forgotten the joy of the disciples when they realized he was alive. Do you really believe this? Is it something you have only been told, or have you experienced the risen Christ in your life? When you come to communion do you want Jesus to live in you or are you simply going through the motions? The biggest threat to Christianity may not be the laws we break; but rather, the joy we’ve lost. Jesus is risen! If that doesn’t make a positive difference in our lives, then we haven’t yet come to faith. Jesus is alive! This faith can bring new life to a tired soul. It can bring joy to a troubled world. It can make all the difference in our lives if only we embrace the message with a joyful heart. Jesus is alive! Do you believe it? Have you felt the joy? Fr. Jeff
