20051st Quarter HCM NEWSLETTERGreetings from sunny, but cool,

Oahu. 2005 is just getting underway. It seems that it will be a busy and, Ipray, a profitable year for all in theLord's service.

The November tribute to our min

ister, Steve Sturm, went off well - thechildren and adults did their parts, theset was impressive (Amy painted themountains, stream, and cabin) and thesong service was well done. Steve wassurprised and touched.

We are rejoicing as our people stepup to serve. One young nurse hasplayed the piano a couple of times, aman led in prayer at the communiontable for the first time. I'm steppingdown from teaching in the mid-weekBible Club and others are showinginterest in helping.

The State requires that large-capacity cesspools be converted to septictanks by April 2005, and that includesWaialua Church's. The congregationvoted to use our expansion fund to paythe cost and then try to repay the fund. The plan for the septic tank installationhas been accepted by the government, and bids are being solicited. There arehundreds of people looking for workers, so it may take time. My missionhas received several big donationswhich can be used if needed.

Amy and I were delighted to betour guides for my niece and her husband for just one day as they visited onan island tour. Nancy is the daughter ofJulien Storms, who helped so much inthe developing of the Palolo ValleyChurch property.

Bettina's wedding, planned for June, was moved up to February 20. WhenAmy and David decided to go, I decidedto go with them. We flew to Chicago, rented a car, picked up Cynthia in Mishi-waka, and drove to Canton, Michigan.Anita flew to Detroit. So five of Bettina's

David was not so thrilledas he drove many miles through slushyroads on the way back to Chicago, but wearrived "without incident. The weddingwas beautiful, and we were glad to meether husband and in-laws.

My word/processor is old and havinglots of problems, so I am at last consenting to get a computer. Cyndy put onetogether that she has been using for ayear and that I bought from her. Webrought it back with us. Now I will haveto learn to use it.

On the way back we stopped inKansas City and visited vdth David's dadand his family there for a couple ofnights. His dad has severe health problems, so we were delighted to see them, and they to see us.

May this be a year of growth in theKingdom.

2005 2nd Quarter HCM NEWSLETTERGreetings from dry Oahu. The

mountain sides are brown, and thebrush fires have started. I'm writing onMemorial Day, so we are rememberingthose brave men and women who have

given and are giving their lives so wecan be free. I'm also right now remembering those who give funds to supportthis work of the Lord in Hawaii. Thank

you.

I planned to spend the secondquarter preparing for and executingthose plans for VBS. I did want to take aweek out to attend a college graduationin California. But plans changed. Mycousin and childhood playmate andcompanion, Ray Storms, had anotherstroke and died. He had been livingwith his son James and family in Ohio. When I learned that they planned tohave his funeral in Kokomo, Indiana, where he had served as elder for manyyears, I decided to go, attend thefuneral, stay on the mainland for threeweeks, then attend the graduation.

It was a time of warm fellowship asfolks from Florida to Hawaii met in

Kokomo to comfort and support Ray'swife, Judy, their son, James, daughter,Carol, and their grandchildren. Some ofthese folks I had never met. Carol

moved east about the time I came to

Hawaii in 1962. The minister spokecomforting words, old friends came, thecongregation was sympathetic and prepared a delicious meal for the family.

I stayed in Kokomo for a week witha dear friend, and visited several of themembers who were ill. One was in the

hospital and died while I was in California. I worshiped with the MacedoniaChurch on Sunday and attended thewomen's Bible Study. The next dayfriends took me to Indianapolis where Icaught the plane to San Jose.

Of course, my three children therewere working during the day, but wewere able to spend evenings together. Iwas happy to spend the days readingand resting. On Mother's Day eve thefamilies there had a cookout at Lora's

house—the first time I had been with

them on Mother's Day for years. Mark'schildren were thrilled to enjoy the spa.On Mother's Day after church, Leta,David, and I drove for about two hoursto visit David's mother in Napa whereshe and her husband live with adaughter's family.

All of the family members and several friends had arranged to attendMeghan's graduation from HumboldtCollege in Arcata, CA. Most of themstayed in the same motel for two nights, but I stayed with beta's dear friends -ones they knew from living in the areaand I had visited previously. My familymet often to eat together, attended thegraduation on the college football fieldon May 14, then attended a lovely partyat a nearby restaurant in the evening.Leta and David stayed until Tuesday topack and move Meghan's belongingsback home. She will be working at ayouth ranch beginning in August. I lefton Sunday with Mark and stayed at hishome until Tuesday, the and thenflew home.

Our VBS had been scheduled tobegin on June 13.When we learned thatschool would end a day earlier thanexpected, and if we began on June 6 wecould have it before the Summer Fun

program began in the city parks, wechanged the date. Of course, that makesus have less preparation time, but itshould help us have more children. Ithink we are making it. A couple of ourmother's are inviting their children'sKindergarten classes, so we hope wehave more students.

Several students from WilliamJessup University came to Hawaii andheld a VBS for one church and came toWaialua to do work one weekend. Theypainted doors and floors in the rest-room, cut grass, trimmed shrubs, andplanted a hedge around the play areas.

Our church is required to install alarge capacity septic tank. The planshave been approved, the contract let,and the work is due to begin in August. We are thankful that it will not be doneduring VBS.

Two young men from our congregation have returned after a tour ofduty inAfghanistan. We are so thankful thatthey returned safely. One will be stationed in Gennany after August, theother is a helicopter pilot and will go toAlabama as an instructor.

I pray that you are well and findingjoy in His service. I am.

2005 3rd ayarter HCM NEWSLETTERGreetings from dry Oahu! So

dry that we have been having frequent brush fires. One just up ourvalley filled our house with smoke, but the firemen kept it from comingdown the mountain to endangerhomes. The one across the valleycaused many inconveniences but noloss of life or property damage—justacres of blackened soil and vegetation. My grandchildren went toschool the first morning but weresent home because of the smoke -

people were experiencing asthmaattacks.

Then the fire came down alongour only access highway, which wasclosed, so staff could not get tlierefrom tovm. The fire burned for sev

eral days before the hot spots wereeliminated. One night, Leilani wasunable to get home and stayed allnight with friends from church.Another day, they opened the military road through Kolekole Pass andshe was able to get to work that way.Yesterday, we had the first rain inmonths, but not for very long. It isdry and hot again today.

Some missionaries have excitingevents to report in the culture thatsurrounds them. Usually in Hawaiiwe can only report beautiful weatherand "life as usual". Our family experienced stress, however. Amy's daughter, Anita, is in California workingand taking college classes. On July25, a man burst into the kitchen

where she was cooking and said "I'mnot going to hurt you" and he didn't,but he held her hostage for 4 hours. Ahousemate and her toddler were also

there. Anita talked the man into let

ting the friend go, and police got thebaby out through a window. Later, they got Anita out the same way andused tear gas to oust the man.

We did have VBS - a week earlier

than originally planned: June 6-10 -and it was a huge success. Our youngmothers invited their children's class

mates, and they invited their siblings,so every class was bigger than weexpected. I had not ordered enoughpupils' books, but the teachers managed. We broke attendance andoffering records. Our mission projectwas I.D.E.S. We sent over $240 tohelp alleviate hunger. The childrenloved the video puppets.

We have finished the weekly smallgroup meetings to help us "Listen tothe Voice of the Shepherd." Now weare listening to him through recordings of Psalms and Proverbs for 15minutes each day of September. Wewill be studying lessons from Proverbs during the Sunday School hour, and the sermons will be from the

Psalms.

The church septic tank project hasbeen postponed from August to September. We dread the mess, but willbe glad to get it over with-and hopethe roof on the church and the parsonage can be done before the winter

I'm happy to report that thechurch septic system is installed andpaid for. Bids are being sought to getthe roofs of the church building andparsonage repaired.

I spent most of September receiving and recording over 90 registrations for our Women's Conference. It

was held October 8 at the Sunset

Beach Church. Our speaker was ElsaLum, a local resident who grew up inGermany during Hitler's reign. Shewas brain-washed to think she was a

part of the "super-race" and to hateJews. Her family was befriended byan American soldier during the occupation. He married Elsa and broughther back to Hawaii. She is so gratefulfor American fi'eedom and that she is

a Christian. She is concerned that

America is trying to eliminate Christianity just as Hitler tried to do.

On November 6, Waialua Churchcelebrated her 40th Anniversary withan afternoon sei*vice with folks from

over 6 congregations present. GlenPowell, the designer of the buildingand her first minister, spoke. Hisson, Gary, the first pianist, rendered

the special music; his daughter,Rebecca, read the scripture. Refreshments were served on the lawn where

folks enjoyed the food and fellowship.

The annual family update: Oldestdaughter AMY lives next door. Shespends much time volunteering atNanakuli High School where herthree children at home attend. Her

husband, DAVID KING, took twomonths off from his construction jobsto work on my house repairs. Now heis building a house in Honolulu.

May 2005 be a blessed year foryou and yours in the Lord's service.

Yours in Him,

remember that skinny saints can certainly beugly also.

Now IF the Christian faith is a systemdesigned by God to make its adherents bothhealthy and wealthy, and slender as well, thensurely, surely, it must provide ways to makethem better looking too; or at least passable.Remember, ugliness is a serious problem forthe poor souls who have a bad case of it - andespecially for those who wish to be hired topreach.

Seems to me like, getting rid of all theseother physical woes from the life of truebelievers (with the kind help of all these spiritual entrepreneurs), the Lord would go on andget rid of ugliness too. But alas, at the momentno company is offering the church an "AllSaints Beauty Program" guaranteed to makeChristians fashionable as well as faithful. But

it's an idea whose time may soon come. I'llkeep my eye on the junk mail for you. -

EAY I2.LMAR.^6Now that you've considered what I'm saying the Bible teaches

on this subject, of course you'll want to keep on reading THEBIBLE. Please don't forget that we learn simple truths fii-st, and noinspired later teaching will CONTRADICT simple truth.

The Bible is God's written Word to bless and build us up - toprepare us for Heaven where we'll see all and know all. If it werewi'itten for school children to fully understand, wliere would thechallenge be for scholars? The Word of God contains some thingswhich challenge the minds of those who know God best. It alsocontains mostly simple truths which we all can easily see andunderstand. The more wc do read the Bible, the more we WILLunderstand of God's truth.

God speaks to us all in both simple and challenging words. Weneed to not fret about harder parts in His Word. Instead, we realisethat we will later know more through our study, and some day weall WILL fully understand.

JUNKMAItFROM Oaylon Fmbrey

The mail boxes of America are beingstuffed these days with a lot of junk! Solicitations, most all of them unsolicited, pour indaily from companies with something to sell.I do not know how you feel, hut personally Ido not mind this. One can learn a lot from

junk mail. Besides, if it were not for thesegood compassionate companies, some daysno one would write me at all. As it is, when Iopen the box each day I am always comfortedto know that someone cares. But, what manyof you may not realize is that Churches getjunk mail too. Is nothing holy anymore, noteven that "sacred" part of the postal department?

Now some of you may not be privy to the"Church Box" down at the post office. I havebeen for a number of years and, believe me,what comes in is often interesting, a veritablecommentary on the spiritual state of affairs in

. r. our time. Consider the following:... i .::Vp!)l5n ®

^ r Y: The postman may leave a

^ nWKhWIllll from a construction com-{tOtftWlDU'NWW pany specializing in buildinghouses for God to dwell in, or anoffer from a lending institutiondesiring to finance (at a goodrate) the next temple, or a pitchfrom an insurance company

Proper Bible Understanding

Leads to Christian UNITY

wanting to protect the building in case offire ortheft. One ofthe newest insurance solicitations

is for liability coverage on the minister in casehe gets sued for giving some poor soul a pieceof foolish wisdom. Actually liability insuranceon the preacher is not a bad idea when you getright down to it. Some preachers are indeed aliability, and others are "liable" to say and domost anything.

Of course, fund raising projects come inregularly. They often come from professionalfund raisers who make a big business out ofmaking money for the Lord. I am sure He isgrateful since He is always in need.

Then there is one company (at least) thatsells a filtering system for the baptistry, to getrid of all visible impurities. Yet so far, to date,no one has come up with a way to cleansebaptismal waters of the sins left there byrecently baptized sinners. Perhaps this isbecause sins "washed awa/' in the waters ofbaptism are not seen except with the eye offaith.

The most interesting solicitation to come inlately, however, was one from a hotel smd restaurant supply company offering a completeline of products, including the following items:ice cream scoops, meat grinders, meat sheers, food mixers, food blenders, ice shavers (forsnow cones), popcorn poppers, hot dog steamers, nacho warmers, char broilers, griddles anddeep fryers. Oh yes, and cash registers!

Upon reading this advertisement, I thoughtsure the church had gotten on the wrongmailing list. I could see how a congregation ofGod's people might need bread for the Lord'sTable. But popcorn? A collection plate wouldhave made a little sense. But a cash register?Surely the church had received a local restaurant's mail by mistake. But no. It was no mistake. Evidently this literature was sent out toall the churches in the land. It made me

wonder what kind of business this companythinks churches are engaged in.

Then it dawned on me, again, what has happened to rehgion in recent years. With thepassing of time, the world of churches hasbecome noticeably less spiritual and noticeablymore secular both in nature, and practice. Theactivities of modem churches distinctly reflectthis change.

Certainly no one can blame an enterprisinghotel supply company for taking advantage ofthis circumstance. After all, if churches are in abusiness requiring a cash register, someoneneeds to sell them one.

Now at the present time most churches stilluse a few Bibles, and hymnals also; but one daythese may give way entirely to ice shavers andnacho warmers. As I say, you can leam a lotfi:omjunk mail.

Butwait. Just as I was about to throw the lastpiece of "junk mail" into my religious trash can,in comes yet another solicitation too good not topass along. This may be the best one in a longtime.

"NOW YOUR CHURCH CAN OFFER THE

ANSWERS," proclaims the ad. Answers? Towhat? Why the answers not only for "strugglingChristians" who are lazy and/or depressed, butfor those who are also FAT.

Yes. dearly beloved. The time has now comewhen "believers can experience fireedom fromthe bondage of eating problems." No doubtthere is more rejoicing in heaven over onepound lost, than over nine pounds in need oflosing. Anyway, what is offered to the church bythis advertisement is a new dynamic "3-D" program of Discipline, Discipleship and DIET.Apparently over 12,000 Churches already have"found" tltis program to be an ideal way to reachout and offer a "spiritual dimension" to thisrather large problem.

Therefore, this aggressive companyis nowpproviding more progressive churches an cd-bi61

"exciting new diet program for believers."(Presumably, this is a diet that will not work onfat sinners.)

Now all you skeptics hold on. There is noquestion about whether a program of this sortis "according to the Scriptures," for the greatprophet Isaiah (chapter 61:3) declared plainlythat the coming Messiah would replace the"spirit of heaviness" with something better. And Jesus himself plainly said, "Come untome, all you who labor, and are HEAVY..." Doesthis not clearly indicate that the Lord wants totake the load of fat off his disciples? Why elsewould the Bible encourage the practice of fasting?

Besides, we all know by this time, afterlistening to radio/tv evangelists over the years, that God does not want any child of His toexperience sickness, nor does He want any ofthem to be poor. But now we learn, praise theLord, that God also wants every Christian to beslim and trim.

In New Testament times, of course, Christians who were concerned with food were

trying to find ways of feeding those who werehungry, rather than trying to keep hungry folksfrom eating. But times have changed, I guess.

In any case, at least now true believers whoare ten pounds beyond perfect can use a dietthey can have full confidence in, knowing thatit comes sponsored by the "divine" institution.Overweight members simply need to have faithin the Scriptures, which positively say, "theylooked on him and were LIGHTENED."

(Psalm 34:5)

Frankly, as interesting as it was, I foundthis latest offer to be somewhat deficient.

While I realize there are many heavyweightChristians around who need help, weight issurely not the worst problem of this type thatsome have to face every morning. What aboutthose disciples who are downright UGLY? Afew extra pounds may indeed be "ugly fat," but
