From the Pastor’s Pen

He comes to my defense. In the Gospel today, Jesus says he’s going to give us another “Advocate,” the Latin word for lawyer or attorney. One of the roles of the Holy Spirit is to be our defense attorney.

One thing a lawyer does is tell his client how to plead. Sometimes, when the evidence against me is overwhelming, the sentence will be a whole lot lighter if I just plead guilty. The Spirit counsels me to be honest, convicting me gently of sin—not to con-demn me, but to help me win my case. He is the Spirit of Truth.

Matthew Kelly writes that knowledge of our weaknesses is the key to our richer, more abundant future. The Spirit of Truth points out our sins, our weaknesses, and our failings, to reveal the places where God wants to trans-form us. The Holy Spirit knows that the Judge happens to be the One who loves you beyond measure, the One who sent His Son to die for you.

Bishop Sheen said that the only way to dislodge sin from one’s life is through the expulsive force of a new love. This is the role of the Advocate, our defense attorney. He is God’s Love poured into our hearts (Ro 5:5) and drives out unlovely loves. He is the Lord and Giv-er of life who testifies within us that so many things we regarded as “life” are really death warmed over.

Whether it’s keeping God’s commandment of love or admitting that we haven’t kept the Commandments, the Spirit of Truth stands behind us, hand on our shoulder, advising, de-fending, encouraging, letting us know we’re cared for. We’re not orphans but the Father’s beloved children.

Pertinent Scriptures for our Farmers & Gardeners:

Mark 4:26-29: Jesus said, “This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land, and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, the sower wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come.”

Genesis 1:29: And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.”

Isaiah 55:10: For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower

and bread to the eater.

John 12:24: Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

Springtime Masstime changes. Beginning Memorial Day Wkend, Sat, May 27, the 8 p.m. Lake Mass resumes. The following Weds, May 31, & Wednesdayts thereafter, Daily Mass at St. Mark’s at 7:30 a.m. Remember Fatima. Pray the Rosary, offer up little sacrifices every day, steer history in the direction of Christ and the Gospel. It’s easy & awesome.

FELLOWSHIP

Support for community members that are dealing with the death or terminal illness— Warren Emmer met with a few parishioners to form a committee and shape a group that will help us improve our support for families that are experiencing, or have experienced, the death or terminal illness of a loved one. Please contact Warren Emmer 701-220-5042

CLIMATE SURVEY FOLLOW-UPS. St. Mark’s is forming a Steering Committee that will convene on May 31, hop-

ing to meet four times through the Summer.

St. Andrew’s will have a congregational meeting

after Mass on June 11.

In both instances, it is a matter of building on the results from the Climate Surveys and drafting a Mission Statement and Values Statement for each parish. The broadest possible partici-

pation is highly appreciated.

Open Door Policy. The rectory is both a gathering place for the community and a residence. Please knock or ring the doorbell before entering. Your pastor certainly wants to be available, but he is also a human being, etc., etc. Do we really need to list the ways a warning would help avoid situations as embarrassing for you as for me?

St. Mark’s Lawn. The roofers from last year have graciously re-seeded those areas of the lawn damaged by last year’s work.

Seed-Time. Our health and our very lives depend on the sprouting of seeds. By planting seeds and nurtur-ing their growth through harvest, we receive God’s blessings. His choicest blessing comes when we break from our labors and enjoy the meals this work allows, most especially the Bread we break at the Altar of the Lord. Saving some of the new seeds allows us to continue this miraculous cycle of nature. Besides planting in the good earth, seeds cannot grow without fresh water. The cycle of rain blesses us, and water stored in the ground is our true treasure. We seek God’s guidance in finding ways to better utilize seeds

Anyone Interested in helping June 1, 2, or 3 with the St. Mark’s Rummage Sale, please

help is very much appreciated!

and water so that farming can be-come more sus-tainable for all who find their vo-cation on the land.

A prayer: Loving God, the Spirit of Life hovered over the waters and began the great work of creation. Bless the waters of this earth. Let them fall again at the proper times so our gardens and fields may show forth abundant life. Bless these seeds, pregnant with life. They show us the Easter mystery of new life com-ing from death and burial. May they burst forth with verdant growth from earth, rain and sun. You have called us to the honored task of being workers in your Great Garden. Bring us to a new awareness of the seeds of love planted in our lives that will grow through the years, watered by the tears of pain and sacrifice that come our way. Your Son showed us the way. We now ask your guidance to follow it all the way to the Resurrec-tion—through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
