“Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road, while He opened to us the scriptures?” - LUKE 24:32 How often do we take the time to discern what Jesus wants from us? Are our prayers always petitions, ask-ing Jesus to do things for us? If so, that’s a one-sided relationship. Living our faith means developing a per-sonal relationship with Jesus. Just like any friendship, there is give and take, each side listening to each other and helping each other out. Take time in silence to lis-ten to what Jesus is asking of you.

From the Pastor’s Pen

The Way of Easter. Today’s Gospel shows how the first com-munity of disciples came to believe that Jesus had risen from the dead.

Funny, it begins with these friends of Jesus walking and talking with Jesus, yet not recognizing him. Like other encounters with the risen Jesus, there’s a disconnect and inability to notice who he is.

We might imagine the feelings of these two disciples. They’re leaving Jerusalem. Their friend Jesus has been crucified. Their hope is gone. They can’t make sense of what happened. They seem already willing to put the experience behind them.

When Jesus approaches, they take him for a stranger. He asks what they’re discussing. He invites them to share their interpretation of the events surrounding his crucifixion and death. When they’re done, Jesus offers his own interpretation. He opens the Scriptures for them, a model for our Liturgy of the Word—what we do each time we gather at Mass. We reflect upon our life experiences and interpret them in light of Scripture. We gather together to break open the Word of God.

In the next part of the story, we find a model for our Liturgy of the Eucharist. The disciples invite the stranger (Jesus) to stay with them. During the meal, when Jesus breaks the bread, the disciples’ eyes are opened. In the Eucharist too we share in the breaking of the Bread and are invited to discover Jesus in our midst.

Just as the disciples returned to Jerusalem to tell the others what happened, we too are sent from our Eucharistic gathering to tell our story.

Do you “miss” Jesus from time to time at Mass? Do we ever leave Mass thinking, Where was Je-sus? Are there other times that you glimpse things in hearing the Word, or watching others at prayer, or in your own devotion to the Broken Bread? Have you ever felt the urge to tell another believer about your own God-moments?

Isn’t it interesting how our experiences, thousands of years later, can echo precisely what we read in the Scriptures? Isn’t that a sign to you that you’re on the right track, the Easter-Way?

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION classes at St. Mark’s have come to an end for this year. The kids have been great and have en-joyed their classes and a couple of activi-ties. The were very proud of making some blankets that were donated to the

Hospital.

Centenary of Fatima. The appearances of Our Lady in 1916 and 1917 to the three young people tending sheep in a remote place that few had heard about were deeply prophetic. The messag-es that Our Lady confided to Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco are no less relevant in our world and in our lives a century later. The Church invites us—as Our Lady invited the three children—to do penance, to pray, to fast, to give alms and

to go to confession precisely so that we won’t fall into the trap of taking God for granted. God’s mercy is deep and powerful, but we also have to be open to it. So let us beg Our Lady of Fatima for re-pentant hearts. We beseech Our Lady of Fatima, the Mother of Mer-cy, to pray with us and for us that united with her Son we may open our hearts to God, the Father of Mercies. Let us earnestly beseech Our Lady of Fatima to intercede for us so that we might stand in solidarity with persecuted Christians by evangelizing, by spreading the Gospel of Jesus, in which the truth about human dignity and freedom is fully revealed. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!
