Heart to heart. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not only to keep the Law but to go deep. Go deep? That means, go to the heart.

Certain laws are inscribed in the human heart, laws of right order—like not kill-ing, respecting the marriage covenant, telling the truth. Can you think of other laws inscribed in your heart? By what fundamental principles do you operate? Are these true and always true?

Welcome to the realm of what we call morality.

Jesus in this ‘Sermon on the Mount’ is giving his listeners a glimpse into his un-derstanding of the moral law. It’s about more than external actions (killing, cheating on a spouse, talking trash), but also about our internal dispositions (anger, lust, webs of lies).

This is a major theme with Jesus. This isn’t the only place he discusses these matters, but it is the lengthiest of his discourses about the Law. Elsewhere, he deals more specifically with marriage (Mt 19). In various places he challenges people to distinguish between God’s commandments and mere human traditions (Mk 7).

Living a moral life is never about simply keeping the Law. Jesus is helping us get beyond a minimalist mentality of ‘being good’ by not breaking the rules.

Living a moral life is about constantly making choices. “If you choose, you can keep the command-ments,” we heard in Sirach. “Before man are life and death, good and evil, whichever he chooses shall be giv-en him” (1st reading).

Can you think of some situation in the last day or so that demanded some kind of response from you, where you had to make a decision about how to re-spond? How did you respond at the time? And can you ask yourself now, ‘what is the law – perhaps an un-written law in my heart – that caused me to respond in this way?’

When Jesus talks of the Law, it’s not some arbi-trary code he’s talking about, but the Law that rises up in our hearts and comes from the heart of God.

Is there an area of your life where you’re not sure what the right thing to do is? What is God’s love’ ask-ing of you? You might like to talk to God about that.

It is in those inner conversations that we come to understand what Freedom is, what it means that God has given us the power to choose. In this discovery we find Christ’s central teaching of the “heart”.

"Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” Mt 15:8. If we wish to be not far but close to the Lord, have with Jesus a good heart to heart. This is where Law becomes Life.

“Good News for a Bad Day” On Sunday, Mar 22, Fr. John Judie of the Archdiocese of Louisville, Kentucky will preside at our Masses. At St. Mark’s, we will have a potluck following 11 a.m. Mass. Towards the end of the meal, Fr Judie will offer some wisdom for our lives.

God’s Gift. Please pray that this year's appeal is successful. God’s Gift Appeal supports 47 programs and minis-tries, most of which support our parish.

Our parishes rely on the financial sup-port of parishioners through weekly Sun-day offertory collections. The diocese also relies on the faithful people of East-ern North Dakota to make possible the many services it is able to provide.

The God’s Gift Appeal provides more than 50% of the annual funding for these ministries that keep our diocesan family

running smoothly. This appeal is an opportunity for each Catho-lic household to help further the mission of the Church.

Let’s do our best to meet our goals: St. Mark’s = $30,227; St. Andrew’s = $11,140.

Good News for a

Bad Day
