Dear Parents,
We live in an ever-connected world where all of us, including our children, have immediate access to infor-
maon. Pre-teens and teens, have a developmental need to be connected to the world they live in and a
desire to be constantly in touch due to the “fear of missing out.” As many pre-teens and teens have their own
devices, they tend to be connected long aer the school day has ended. This never-ending stream of infor-
maon appears in social media, videos, blogs, images, newsfeeds and websites and not all of the content has
been designed with the developmental needs of children in mind. This shi in how we access informaon
means that parents, or another trusted adult, are not always around to oer support when our kids read
disturbing news-related informaon.
At mes, many adults can struggle to process the devastang news stories that are reported 24/7. Some
adults can feel overly alarmed, depressed and worried about the state of the world in which we live. The
emoonal reacons that we go through as adults are oen mirrored in our children. The signicant dier-
ence, however, is that many pre-teens and teens do not have the ability to frame such events in context and
they are less equipped to discern whether the source of informaon is credible. This can oen lead to chil-
dren processing current events long aer the event is over.
This week, as a front-loading acvity for the upcoming MS Parent Coee on Teens and Technology, we would
like to share an insighul arcle from Common Sense Media that oers guidance to parents about how to
explain the news to children. We hope you nd it useful.
