The Hudson Honeycomb Project: patterns in nature

By Palmer Reale

“There are roughly three New Yorks. There is, first, the New York of the man or woman who was born here, who takes the city for granted and accepts its size and its turbulence

as natural and inevitable. Second, there is the New York of the commuter — the city that is devoured by locusts each day and spat out each night. Third, there is the New York of the

person who was born somewhere else and came to New York in quest of something. ...Commuters give the city its tidal restlessness; natives give it solidity and continuity; but

the settlers give it passion.

- EB White

The Native

The Commuter

The tourist

The New Yorker that comes here in aw travels like the bee and is unknowingly wisked into this frenzy of a city.

The Commuter comes to NYC with work in mind. They travel like animals in herds following one another pushing and shov-ing with the only mind to get to where they need to be.

the native New Yorker who was born here who is sick of it and wants to escape the clutches of it, the one who longs to be re-moved from its bind.

Maybe there is a way for all of these people to experience New York in a new surreal way. A getaway of some form that lets us look upon the city and be close to it but not to experi-ence it just yet.

This poem brings to mind the idea of the BEE. The Bee is seen in all the New Yorker’s. But maybe there is a way for all of these people to experience New York in a new surreal way. A getaway of some form that lets us look upon the city and be close to it but not to experience it just yet. For all three of these “Bees” there is a need for a place to act as a get away, a place to me removed temporarily from the city but close enough to comfortably access it. It is a place for us to come together as one form of bee in a “honeycomb”. This honeycomb is a home for us all, a place of joy and re-laxation. On in which we can get away from it all for a little while but at the end of the day or weekend it is a place to one again return to NYC.

THE HUDSON HONEYCOMB PROJECT is located on the North Shore of Staten Island. It is a “getaway resort” for resi-dents of NYC as well as tourists. The resort is to be a direct improvement of the North Shore of SI. The North is a dis-connection of Staten Island. It has required, in some way, a revival of amenities to attract residents from not only the South side of the Island but also all of New York.

The new resort brings excitement to this area of New York. This resort offers those who might not have the time or the money to go on an expensive vacation they chance to comfortably getaway for a weekend of a day. It keeps busi-ness in NY. Residents no longer need to travel to outlet malls in NJ they have their own located minutes away.

The Honeycomb is a modern day experiment in megastructures and acts as a template for future megastructures. It is a module that can be constantly repeated to add space to the structure as needed. The Honeycomb project is a slow moving plan for, on a small scale, reno-vation of an area. Slowly the modules are added to stimulate econom-ic growth as needed. Another site might not need the full megastruc-ture and program that comes with it, it might be more suited for the retail portion alone and more of it. The modules can be modified to accommodate such changes in site context and intent. The Structure’s full dimensions are 500’ x 70’ and is 70’ tall. Depending on the client and their needs smaller honeycombs or larger ones can be erected. The Typical strictness of the honeycomb is modified for programmatic changes. Its module is shaped by the interior changes and needs fol-lowing Louis Sullivan’s famous quote: “Form follows function.”
