PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Brothers, Greetings, As you read this, choruses of Auld Lang Syne have ushered in 2019 along with hopes of renewal and invigoration a new year always brings. As we start into the new year, we should all ask ourselves how we can improve personally, and the make the world a better place for everyone. We hope that reflection includes your brothers at the Native Sons of the Golden West. How can we serve, and be better brothers? As I reflect I realize I have only 5 months left in my term as your president. It's been pretty good thus far, and I have really enjoyed serving our parlor, but it also reminds me we have much left to accomplish, and the clock is ticking. These worthy goals include the success and attempt to diversify our fundraising efforts from our usual Fireworks sales ( which we will still continue), but to other efforts as well. Hence, keep your eyes out for your tickets to our "Pasta Drive Thru" Dinner. The event takes place on April 26th, but sales will be starting in the next couple of weeks. We are asking everyone to take a book of ten tickets to either purchase or sell to your family, neighbors and friends. There will be more details in an article included in this newsletter. We raise these funds not only for our parlor’s sustenance, but also to fund things such as Cleft Palate, and of course our Historical Preservation Fund. We also contribute to small groups such as the Boy and Girl Scouts, Santa Claus Lane, and Youth Enrichment Services. We also use funds to sponsor some of our brothers and offset their costs when they attend Grand Parlor, or for other most worthy community causes. As I have mentioned before, our brother, Recording Secretary, and Grand Trustee Garry Devlin will be running to be elected as Grand Third Vice President at Grand Parlor in May. This means more of a commitment, and of course funds to support our most worthy brother in his representation of our Parlor. Let's make sure this happens. Among other goals are, as always, to sustain and increase membership. This is a vital cause, and we ask that everyone of the team row in the same direction. Membership is everyone's job. We are working towards forming a Friends of the Arrowhead Parlor 110, and before the end the end of my term I will be proposing a building project to our holding corporation that will add to the enjoyment of all our members. However none of this can happen without the involvement of each and every brother. WE all win when everyone works together. Remember a little goes a long way if everyone contributes. In 2019, Brothers, let’s all remember our obligations. Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year that lasts beyond all the celebrations. Let's transfer some energy into real goals and accomplishments. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Brothers,

Greetings, As you read this, choruses of Auld Lang Syne have ushered in 2019 along with hopes of renewal and invigoration a new year always brings. As we start into the new year, we

should all ask ourselves how we can improve personally, and the make the world a better place for everyone. We hope that reflection includes your brothers at the Native Sons of the Golden West. How can we serve, and be better brothers?

As I reflect I realize I have only 5 months left in my term as your president. It's been pretty good thus far, and I have really enjoyed serving our parlor, but it also

reminds me we have much left to accomplish, and the clock is ticking. We also use funds to sponsor some of our brothers and offset their costs when

they attend Grand Parlor, or for other most worthy community causes.

There has never been a better time than now. Don't wait until next month, attend the January 16th meeting, and pledge to lend a hand into real kinetic motion as well. Holidays Rock at Brazelton Hall

December celebrations began at the December 5 meeting, with a traditional California Christmas meal of tamales. Many thanks to Barbara Kimball, Carol Robb, and Kathy Van Vleet who prepared the festive meal.

A few days later, President Mark Westwood held the staff Holiday Party for radio stations KCAA and KQLH. Arrowhead 110 members were included in the invitation.

As would be expected with Mark, a DJ and Karaoke singing were highlights. Brother Rick Ruhl shared his unique version of “The Christmas Song” beginning with these words, “Chipmunks roasting on an open fire….” (we’ll spare you the rest of the lyrics!) Gayla Smith provided a spirited version of “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.”

One question remains: Jim, did you step up and get Gayla her hippo for Christmas?

Arrowhead Parlor held its own traditional “Tom and Jerry” party on the 19th. This year we enjoyed two types of Tom and Jerrys—one eggnog based, and the other the hot version.

An array of delicious appetizers, good company and conversation, and a “white elephant” gift exchange rounded out a pleasant evening embodying the Native Sons core value of “Friendship.”

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Brethren, On Tuesday, March 17, a mouth-watering Saint Patrick’s Day dinner will be served at Arrowhead Parlor with a great traditional corned beef and cabbage meal. In years past, this has been the highlight of the month of March. For the sum of only $12 each, all adults, including your friends and relatives, can celebrate the season with all our brothers and sisters. Bring your children (12 and younger) for only $6 each. Please call today for your reservation. Let Mike Anderson at (909) 889-7303 or Jim Smith at (909) 915-4785 know that you will attend. Please call them , by March 15. Yummy! With the initiation of nine new members into our worthy order on February 18, we now have a net gain of 25 new members this membership year. Our total membership is at 275 and we are very close to becoming the fifth largest parlor in California. I am very proud of the work we have accomplished during my presidency. We should all be proud. The final initiation before the order’s 2008-09 membership year closes on April 30 will be on April 15. Also our monthly luncheon will be at Mitla Café, Wednesday, March 25, at noon, on historic “Route 66,” 642 North Mt. Vernon Avenue, San Bernardino. Gather your items for the annual rummage sale. It’s around the corner on April 4 at our parlor. It’s a great opportunity to clear out that “stuff” and raise funds for Native Sons.

Remember, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure! In Friendship, Loyalty, and Charity, Brother Dennis

INITIATION OF NEW MEMBERS

Nine new members were initiated into Arrowhead Parlor 110 on February 19. They included Rita Ramirez-Dean, a trustee of Copper Mountain Community College District and retired professor; Kathleen Henry, a college professor; Amber Lansaw, manager of a self storage facility; Eric Sell, a self-employed printer; and John Valdivia, a pharmaceutical company representative, all sponsored by Jim Smith Others were Gil Navarro, an education advocate and member of the San Bernardino County Board of Education; and Jess Vizcaino, an aide to Congressman Joe Baca and trustee of the San Bernardino Community College District, sponsored by Sam Garcia. Additional initiates were Paul Chaney, a certified arborist, sponsored by Paul Lane; and Bruce Varner, a corporate attorney, sponsored by Jack Brown. A warm welcome is extended to all these new members.

NOMINATION OF DELEGATES

Arrowhead Parlor elected the following delegates to this year’s Grand Parlor: Garry Devlin, Doug Calkins, John W. Anderson, Tim Prince, and Ben Romano. Mark Shepherd was elected as our alternate. Because Arrowhead Parlor has more than 250 members, it is entitled to five elected delegates. (In addition, four of our members are automatic delegates: Mike Anderson, supervising district

deputy grand president, and Chris Leon, member, Grand Parlor Board of Control, fall into that category because it comes with their jobs; so do Jim Smith and Richard Kimball because they are past grand presidents.) The convention will be held at Seaside, just outside of Monterey, during the third week of May.

NEW MEMBERS We always welcome new members

into Arrowhead Parlor. That's the way we'll maintain the largest membership in Southern California. One of the best ways to introduce a candidate to Arrowhead Parlor is to bring them to our free dinners the first Wednesday of the month. It's amazing what good food and a little wine can do?

The excuse that "there are few Native-born Californians" is not true.

Applications are available at the parlor office or online at www.nsgw.org.

As part of our efforts to recruit new members, we are always looking for ways to make our meetings more stimulating. One suggestions was have speakers at some of our meetings. If you have any ideas for a speakers or other programs, please contact President Mark Westwood.

DELEGATE NOMINATIONS At the business meeting on Wednesday, February 6th, 2019, the parlor will hold nominations for delegates to the 142nd Grand Parlor in Visalia. Election for delegates will be at the business meeting on Wednesday, March, March 6th, 2019. Arrowhead Parlor will have (4) delegates in addition to our (4) automatic delegates. Past Grand President James M. "Jim" Smith, Grand Trustee Garry Devlin, member Board of Control Chris Leon, and SDDGP Barbara Kimball.

“DRIVE-THRU PASTA DINNER” SET FOR APRIL 26, 2019 In our effort to improve fundraising and lessen our reliance on the July 4 Fireworks Booth, we are “borrowing” an idea from John C. Frémont Parlor, which has developed this concept into a very successful operation. In the next few weeks, all brothers will be asked to begin selling tickets for the April 26 event. Prices are $12 for one

dinner, $20 for two dinners, and $9 for third or additional dinners. Ticket purchasers will arrive between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. to simply pick up their

dinners, which will include garlic bread and then head home with a yummy dinner for family and friends.

Watch for details in both the Arrowgrams and Arrowblast in your email.
