PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Brothers,

What’s better than an Admission Day Picnic? — An Admission Day Picnic with air conditioning, and no ants or mosquitos! As you can see from the photos on the left, there was a good turn-out, and an

enjoyable, relaxing evening, culminating in the obligation of new member Andrea DeLeon.

I want to thank the Vice Presidents and other officers for showing up on a Friday evening to consider various donation and reimbursement requests. That takes real dedication!

A word to the wise — If you suddenly spot something that you think the Parlor simply MUST own, please get an OK before making a purchase on our behalf. Article XI of our Bylaws make it clear that all reimbursements require pre-approval.

October 1 is the deadline to RSVP for the October 13 brunch and check presentation as St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica. You will get a clear picture of the good your cleft palate donation does, as well a meet some of the amazing medical professionals who literally change the lives of so many children. Please make the effort to attend. Once you see the good work our donations support, you will find it very hard to say “no” when the Charitable Fund solicitation is made. To RSVP, contact [email protected] or phone him at (310) 829-8106.

While we're on the topic of “good works,” I want to thank the Del Rosa Neighborhood Action Group (DRNAG) for including our parking lot in a recent “clean-up” day. DRNAG President Vince Laster is a past-president of Arrowhead #110 and remains an active member of our Parlor.

ARROWHEAD CELEBRATES ADMISSION DAY! On September 4th Arrowhead Parlor held an indoor “picnic” to celebrate Califor-

nia’s Admission Day. We are 169 years young and still going strong! We had around 24 people show up for dinner and the meeting. The parlor provided hot dogs and ham-burgers and the members brought all the “fixins”. We had salads, watermelon, deviled eggs, baked beans, chips and dips and a delicious cake for dessert!

Everyone enjoyed the time to sit and talk with friends! It was good to see Harold and Sandra DeTinne both at the dinner and at the meeting. We also had a chance to meet and talk to Andrea De Leon who was obligated later that night. Andrea is the new Executive Director of the Highland Chamber of Commerce. Welcome Andrea!

As we all know, California was admitted to the Union on September 9, 1850. We are unique in that we never were a territory before gaining admittance as a state. Cali-fornia is the 31st state to be admitted, so when you count the stars on the American Flag and get to number 31, you know that is our star!

Not only did we celebrate California’s “Birthday,” we also celebrated Garry Devlin’s and Barbara Kimball’s Birthdays!

With outside temperatures above 100°, our “indoor picnic” was a hit! Pictured on the far right is Andrea DeLeon, who was obligated that evening.

The relaxed atmosphere let old friends a chance to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Brethren, On Tuesday, March 17, a mouth-watering Saint Patrick’s Day dinner will be served at Arrowhead Parlor with a great traditional corned beef and cabbage meal. In years past, this has been the highlight of the month of March. For the sum of only $12 each, all adults, including your friends and relatives, can celebrate the season with all our brothers and sisters. Bring your children (12 and younger) for only $6 each. Please call today for your reservation. Let Mike Anderson at (909) 889-7303 or Jim Smith at (909) 915-4785 know that you will attend. Please call them , by March 15. Yummy! With the initiation of nine new members into our worthy order on February 18, we now have a net gain of 25 new members this membership year. Our total membership is at 275 and we are very close to becoming the fifth largest parlor in California. I am very proud of the work we have accomplished during my presidency. We should all be proud. The final initiation before the order’s 2008-09 membership year closes on April 30 will be on April 15. Also our monthly luncheon will be at Mitla Café, Wednesday, March 25, at noon, on historic “Route 66,” 642 North Mt. Vernon Avenue, San Bernardino. Gather your items for the annual rummage sale. It’s around the corner on April 4 at our parlor. It’s a great opportunity to clear out that “stuff” and raise funds for Native Sons.

Remember, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure! In Friendship, Loyalty, and Charity, Brother Dennis

INITIATION OF NEW MEMBERS

Nine new members were initiated into Arrowhead Parlor 110 on February 19. Additional initiates were Paul Chaney, a certified arborist, sponsored by Paul Lane; and Bruce Varner, a corporate attorney, sponsored by Jack Brown. A warm welcome is extended to all these new members.

NOMINATION OF DELEGATES

Arrowhead Parlor elected the following delegates to this year’s Grand Parlor: Garry Devlin, Doug Calkins, John W. Anderson, Tim Prince, and Ben Romano. Mark Shepherd was elected as our alternate. Because Arrowhead Parlor has more than 250 members, it is entitled to five elected delegates. (In addition, four of our members are automatic delegates: Mike Anderson, supervising district

deputy grand president, and Chris Leon, member, Grand Parlor Board of Control, fall into that category because it comes with their jobs; so do Jim Smith and Richard Kimball because they are past grand presidents.) HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN SOMETHING IMPORTANT? Brothers, Summer has finally ended, according to the calendar, and we have entered the fall months. Arrowhead Parlor collects dues on a monthly basis, having you pay on the month on which you joined the parlor. There are six of you who have not paid your August or September dues. Barbara Kimball, Financial Secretary, has sent letters and called you. Please send your dues in promptly, as we have monthly bills that need to be paid and the only way to do that is to have our Brothers pay their dues in a timely manner. If there is a problem with paying your dues, please contact Barbara Kimball by calling (99) 731-0517, or by email at [email protected]. Thank you.

THE CRAM FAMILY Excerpts from History of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties

By John Brown, James Boyd The Cram Family are one of the pioneer citrus growers in Highland California., Lewis and Sarah Cram came overland with oxen teams. They first settled

in Chino Ranch where they farmed. Later, Lewis Cram homesteaded a hundred and sixty acres on a section now known as East Highland. Lewis and his brothers, together with one of the Van Leuvens filed on water rights from the Santa Ana River. The water was conveyed to their lands through an open ditch.

Lewis set out two acres of orange seedlings as an experiment. His oldest son Andrew J. Cram and his brothers gathered and packed in the orchard because their was no packing houses. The boxes of oranges were hauled by wagon to the nearest railroad station at Colton. The Cram family received between three and half and five dollars a box! The Cram children, along with the children of pioneer families attended a schoolhouse that was a 16x24 foot building constructed of framing timbers and boards on the outside and had no ceiling. Additions were gradually added until the school house was 75 feet long. There have been at least two other Cram Schools built in East Highland. The current one is an elementary school. Andrew J. Cram continued the citrus orchards, expanding them and modernizing the way trees are planted, cared for, and the fruit picked, packed and shipped. The groves land values increased to between three and four thousand dollars an acre. William H. Cram was another one of Lewis. Cram’s son who continued in the citrus industry. He was very observant and noticed the food planted in a lower elevation only survived a year, while plants planted at the higher elevations did much better. He continued the success of the Cram orchards.

On Saturday, September 7, 2019, we held our monthly meeting and luncheon at the Jagerhaus restaurant in Anaheim. Visiting brothers were Barbara Kimball, SDDGP; and Jim Smith, PGP (’80-’81). Both, of course, are members of Arrowhead Parlor #110. Their attendance was greatly appreciated. The meeting was very quick and easy. We learned that the Native Sons is in the green for the first time in a long time with membership numbers. We at Santa Ana Parlor are currently in ongoing discussions about how we will seek to increase membership within our parlor. We have also learned that this year has been plagued with deaths. Many of our brothers have been passing away quicker than we can count. May they all rest in peace. Additionally, I can report that Santa Ana Parlor will be audited by Grand Third Vice President, Jeff Schmidt during Southern California Weekend. I will report on that audit at the appropriate time. For those that might like an additional resource, the official Santa Ana website has been updated to include the most recent edition of our newsletter, as well as, information about SoCal Weekend. Please visit www.nsgw74.org for more.

Until next time, take care In Friendship, Loyalty, and Charity, Richard F. Kimball Third Vice President, Santa Ana Parlor #7
