Rotary Club of Roseville Chase Bulletin 1

MEETING on 10 SEPTEMBER (6.00 pm for 6.30 pm)

Bulletin Volume; 30 Issue No; 5 10 September2019

GUEST SPEAKER

JOHN CUTLER

THIRD GENERATION BESPOKE TAILOR

John had first joined the company J H Cutler, in 1965. Other than a couple of years spent in London learning the business and studying at the Tailor and Cutter Academy, he had worked in the family firm all his adult life.

He assumed the responsibility for cutting in 1972, which evolved into Business Principal, Designer and Cutter in 1976. With over 50 years experience of high-end bespoke tailoring it is a position he still holds to this day.

The story of J.H. Cutler began in the mid 1800s, when the Cutler family, originally from the English Midlands, emigrated to Australia. Joseph Handel Cutler, an engineer by trade, found work in Ballarat during the time of the Victorian Gold Rush.

At that time his eldest son, also named Joseph Handel Cutler, was only six years old. His mother Matilda was an accomplished dressmaker having owned and run a successful business in Staffordshire, employing and building a solid clientele.

It was at her feet that young Joseph learnt his design and cutting skills. He moved to Sydney and in 1884 established his first J H Cutler shop at 70 King Street in the heart of the city.

John was featured in Leo Scofields column in the NST 6 issues back.

PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORT

Thank you all the members, their partners and friends of Rotary for your work last week.

The breakfast at Roseville Public School was the usual smooth operation with approximately 500 people being fed.

Bunnings was disappointing with only about $550 profit. I was on the middle shift and we had a steady flow of

customers. The other two shifts must have been slow.

The District Governor was at the last meeting and gave a presentation of her aims for the district for this rotary year. It was good to have the ADG, Trish Wetton, present as well and the DG’s offsider, Geoff Brennan. He spoke about the 2020 conference to be held in Wollongong from 20 to 22 March.

Five boys from Shore gave an interesting talk on what they gained from MUNA. It was not just a description of the proceedings. It was a pity that the team representing the USA at the District MUNA did not win at the National competition as they did a few years ago. The standard at the national level is exceptionally high. We would like to thank the teacher John Meakin for the effort he has put into our activities over the years.

The next meeting should be interesting and different with John Cutler, a top quality tailor, speaking about his family business.

On the 24 September we will hear George Ayoub, a Rugby Technical Match Official, speak on the Rugby World Cup whilst it is happening in Japan. Anyone interested in Rugby will find this an informative and entertaining evening.Invite your friends.

So far we have 1 sponsor and some prizes for the Golf Day - see page 6 for details. We need more sponsors and prizes.

A Roster will shortly be prepared and published in the Bulletin, for the 6 months next year, of when you are responsible for securing a guest speaker for a meeting. Please check it and give the details of your guest speaker to Ross well in advance.

Richard GreenPresident.

MATCH OFFICIALPRIOR RUGBY WORLD CUPS

A NIGHT NOT TO BE MISSEDGeorge Ayoub will be our special guest speaker at our regular meeting on Tuesday 24 September (just after Australia’s first Pool game against Fiji on 21 September in the second week of the World Cup and just before their most important game against Wales on 29 September).

LAST MEETING - 27 AUGUST 2019DISTRICT GOVERNOR KALMA McLELLAN

2019 MUNA TEAMSDG Kelma McLellanKelma provided us with a personal background of her history leading up to her reaching the pinnacle of Rotary in our District.

Her exposure to community service came through her father’s involvement as an Apexian at Manly and then as a Rotarian at Blacktown Rotary Club. That exposure encouraged her to become a Rotoractor at Mosman before joining Rotary.

Kalma outlined what life is like as one of 21 DG’s around the country, and how they network for a single purpose. One of her passions is Purple House, an indigenous health assistance and educational service, and expressed her delight in being able to contribute to the funding of an indigenous health worker with Purple House. R. I. President, Mark Maloney’s theme for 2019/2020 is “Rotary Connects the World”, and DG Kalma covered a number of ways in which Rotary in our District can connect with the community through such things as;• use the classification system and changes as a recruitment tool• informing the community of what we do as Rotary, and why we do it so they

better understand our purpose• using professional links to build growth• developing the Corporate and Friends of Rotary membership• using the world wide Rotary brand to create community awarenessKalma, with the assistance of Rtn Geoff Brennan, encouraged our attendance at the 2020 combined District 9675 and 9685 District Conference.

Email From DG Kalma.HI RichardIt was a lively and entertaining night and I thank you very much for allowing me some time to share. The Shore boys certainly have some talent between them - wonder what they will all be up to in 5 yrs time???Thank you for you hospitality - I really appreciate it!RgdsKalma

MUNA 2019 participantsThe 5 SHORE students our club sponsored to MUNA 2019 gave us an individual insight into what their participation in MUNA had taught them, how they approached their roles and the benefit of their experience.Some of the interesting observations they made were;

Page 8: &OXERI5RVHYLOOH&KDVH · 9/10/2019  · Principal, Designer and Cutter in 1976. With over 50 years experience of high-end bespoke tailoring it is a position he still holds to this

• MUNA is not a debate - its a platform for convincing others of a “realistic” position taken which may not be factual.

• an art of compromise and negotiating with other teams is critical in swaying other participants to support your teams position.

• At the National level the quality, passion and conviction of participants was exceptional and instructive.

Our Team who won the District MUNA participated in the National MUNA in Canberra during August, performing very well but were not successful in winning.

Each of the students displayed self confidence, accomplished public speaking talents, and an ability to convey their messages very clearly, succinctly and with humour.

TRAIN RIDE TO END POLIO 24 October 2019

At the Club Presidents Meeting in D9675 on Friday night and D9685 on Saturday morning details of this major World Polio Day event were presented.

The major outcomes are that this is an opportunity for you to achieve one of your goals for the Rotary citation: Hold an event to raise funds for, or to increase awareness of Rotary’s work toward polio eradication.By your participation in this event your Club will assist in the following:

Public Image: Help build awareness that this is the Number One Priority for Rotary.

Fundraising: We ask that, as a Club, that your Club contribution is $1950 ($10 per station) and that you encourage your members to personally support this fundraiser by contribution $195 ($1 per station).

Rotarian Engagement: Based on last year’s event this is a great opportunity for all members to ride together on the train for a time of their own determination as a fellowship activity and mix with Rotarians from other Clubs in the Greater Sydney area. We will also have representatives from two Districts in New Zealand riding with us for the whole event.

AN OLD DOBERMAN

An old Doberman starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he’s lost. Wandering about, he notices a lion heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old Doberman thinks, “Oh, oh! I’m in deep shit now!”

Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat.

Just as the lion is about to leap, the old Doberman exclaims loudly, “Boy, that was one delicious lion! I wonder, if there are any more around here?”

Hearing this, the young lion halts his attack in mid-stride, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees.

“Whew!,” says the lion, “That was close! That old Doberman nearly had me!” Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the lion. So, off he goes.

The squirrel soon catches up with the lion, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the lion.

The young lion is furious at being made a fool of and says, “Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what’s going to happen to that conniving canine!”

Now, the old Doberman sees the lion coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, “What am I going to do now?,” but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old Doberman says……..

“Where’s that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another lion!”

Moral of this story…

Don’t mess with the old dogs...

Age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery!

Bull Shit and brilliance only come with age and experience.

President Ronald ReaganDuring his time as President of the United States, Ronald Reagan revealed he was developing a new hobby. He said he was actually collecting stories that he could actually prove are being told among the Russian people. They make them up themselves and tell them between themselves, and reveal they have got a great sense of humour and got a little cynical attitude about things in their country.

Running the CountryThis story was an American and Russian were arguing about their two countries. The American said, “ I can go into the President’s Oval Office, pound the desk and say, Look I dont like the way your running our country “.The Russian said, “I can do that”The American said “You can ?”“Yes”, said the Russian. I can go into the Kremlin, into the General Secretary’s Office, pound on the desk, and say “Mr General Secretary, I dont like the way President Reagan is running his country”.

Buying an Automobile in Russia. There is a ten year delay in the Soviet Union in the delivery of an automobile. You go through quite a process when you are ready to buy, then you put up your money in advance. This guy lay down his money, and the fellow who was in charge said,“Ok then, now come back in ten years and get your car”.And the guy said, “Morning or afternoon?”The follow behind the counter was amused and said, “Well ten years from now, what does it matter?”The buyer said, “Well the plumbers coming in the morning”.

Booking DriversLess than one in seven families in the Soviet Union own a vehicle. Most of the automobiles are driven by the bureaucrats. So an order went out one day to the police that anyone caught speeding, anyone, no matter who, gets a ticket.Well Gorbachov comes out of his home, his dicta, he was late getting to the Kremlin. There was the driver and his limousine waiting. He told the driver to get in the back, he would drive.Down the road went Gorbachov. They passed two motor cycle cops. One took off after him, and pretty soon was back to his buddy, and his buddy said, “Well did you give him a ticket?”The other said “No”. His buddy said “Well why not?”“Oh” he said “Too important, too important”.“We are told to give anyone a ticket no matter what or who it is”, said the buddy.“No. No. I couldn’t, too important” said the first.“Who was it “ asked the buddy.“I don’t know, I couldn’t recognise him, but his driver was Gorbachov”
