Guest Speaker is Peter Tonkin,WALSH BAY ARTS PRECINCT.

Dr Peter Tonkin has a strong design and urban design reputation, and a wide range of experience from simple to complex buildings and site planning. Award winning projects have included the Eternity Playhouse, the National Arboretum Canberra, Glebe Town Hall Adaptive Reuse, the redevelopment of the Hyde Park Barracks Museum, the Australian War Memorial London, and Victoria Square and Riverbank Bridge in Adelaide. Peter is currently working on the upgrade of the Bondi Pavilion and the nationally-significant Walsh Bay Arts Precinct for Create NSW.

Peter has maintained an independent practice since 1981 and in 1987 he joined Brian Zulaikha to form Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects. He has presented papers and lectures at many conferences and universities in Australia and overseas. He is currently Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the University of Canberra, and a former Trustee of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW.

Peter Tonkin will introduce the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, where the NSW Government is creating a thriving internationally-significant Arts Precinct. Walsh Bay’s existing performing arts and cultural precinct is getting a $200 million redevelopment that will promote a sense of community and inclusivity amongst Sydney’s art creators, audiences and the public. We will explore the underdeveloped pier’s refurbishment and its influence on the area, and look at the benefits and risks of transforming heritage buildings into innovative new uses.

Carevan have $20,000 to buy a van. Richmond Rotary and our club will each donate $1,000 to cover the miscellaneous costs ,such as registration and insurance.

Variety club speakerThe speaker will speak on the history of the bash started 35 years ago by Dick Smith . He will also talk about his experiences on many bashes

Last meeting we heard from the DG . She gave a clear summary of what has been happening in the district this

year and suggested we continue to participate in district activities, in particular the foundation. PDG John gave us a gnome that we have to decorate and take to the District Conference.

Note that we have two meetings on Mondays i.e. 25 March and 29 April.

We need people for the debate against Lindfield . They do not want it to be a serious evening, but a fun night.

The visit to the Hyde Park Memorial will take about an hour and will be followed by dinner at a local restaurant.

A flier has gone to the parents of the pupils of Roseville Public School and the Scouts inviting them to come to our meeting on the 12 March. Hopefully some might enjoy themselves and become a member . We would like a good attendance on that night.

Fliers for the Wine and Cheese tasting night have gone to all members and all the schools and the Scouts. We need to get about 150 people. Note date is 6 April.

The date of the golf day has been finally settled . It is Wednesday 22 May.

Note the other activities in the bulletin.It would be good to have a number of people at the scout function as they help us out a lot.

LAST MEETING - 12 FEBRUARYSUSAN WAKEFIELD - DGDistrict Governor Susan Wakefield and her husband, PDG John Wakefield, presented to the Club on 12th February, 2019. It was a far-ranging coverage of the Rotary activities of D9690 including some controversial topics such as the continuation /or not of Rotary Down Under and potential amalgamations.

She also challenges a few “mis-facts” such as the Rotary Foundation only sent money overseas. Examples such as Indian Rotary Club contribution to a global effort to pay for medical equipment in Sydney and some 38 Indian club in Madras, itself, paying into the Foundation to widen our re-appreciation of Rotary.

If you recall there was a fund raiser involving travelling all over the Sydney’s rail network all in one day…’insanity’, we said. It raises some $24K that when added to their 2:1 funding from the Gates foundation saw some 3-4 times that amount go to Polio Plus…unbelievable.

Drought assistance, foreshadowing Conference highlights and John’s Grace Place project were all re-energising information. Apology for having to stop question when we were in full swing but a second speaker was warming up and so Part 1 of the meeting came to a close. A really informative, entertaining and challenging presentation and …all off the cuff. Thank you, DG and PDG John.

ANTHONY HAWORTH At our last meeting we were fortunate to have Anthony Haworth the General Manager, accompanied by his wife Jane, of Captain Cook Cruises Sydney speak to us about his past 48 years with the company.

He spoke about how the Company started and progressed to where it is today. I’m sure everyone enjoyed the presentation and we thank him for giving up his time to speak with us. It was a dream of his father Trevor and he told us of the battles along the way to get the company to where it is today. Trevor and Geraldine Haworth were both Paul Harris Fellows with two sapphires and would have been very proud of Anthony’s presentation – they were very community minded people who worked very hard to make their dream come true.

By notice dated 30th November 2018, and as published in the Dinner Bulletin of 11 December 2018, the Secretary gave notice of a Special General Meeting of the Club to be held at the Roseville Golf Club, 4 Links Avenue, Roseville on Tuesday 26 February 2019, commencing at 6.30 pm.

The AGENDA and BUSINESS of the Meeing as detailed in the Notice of 30 November and as published in the Dinner Bulletin of 11 December 2018, is restated below for the information of members.

That the amendments to the Club bylaws, (last adopted Version 10, dated 6 December 2016), as proposed in the detailed explanatory notes dated 24 November 2018 and circulated to all members on 30th November 2018, be and are hereby adopted.2. That the explanatory notes of 24 November 2018 be attached to the minutes of the Special Meeting and form an integral part of those Minutes.

Notes for benefit of members;(a) Bylaw 19 Section 1 provides “These bylaws may be amended at any regular meeting, a quorum being present, by a special resolution.”

Section 3 - Special Resolutions: A resolution of the club is a special resolution if: (1) it is passed by a majority which comprises not less than three-quarters of such members of the club as, being entitled under these bylaws so to do, vote in person at a general meeting of which not less than 21 days’ notice specifying the intention to propose the resolution as a special resolution was given in accordance with these bylaws:

PROPOSED BYLAW CHANGES.

To be considered at the Meeting on 26 February 2019.

Explanatory Notes

A review of our bylaws was instigated by President Richard Green with the intention of making the composition and functioning of the Board more flexible, less prescriptive, and allowing the President more freedom in determining the functions of different portfolios.

A number of changes to the bylaws, to achieve Richard’s objectives, have been proposed.

The review concentrated on the following bylaws with proposed changes summarised below;

• Part 2; Bylaw 2 - Board of Director. Composition and Membership of Board andtheelectionofOfficersandDirectors. Setting the maximum and minimum number of Directors on the Board, and the determination of Director responsibilities.

• Part3;Bylaw3-OfficersandDirectorsofBoard.Some quite significant changes to Section 6 are proposed, including appointments by the President or Board, of one or more of Vice Presidents (but no more than two); specifying that a President-Elect shall also be a Vice-President; the Board and President’s authority to manage these appointments and what happens and how matters are dealt with in the absence of a President-Elect.

• Part 3; Bylaw 4 - President-Elect and Vice-Presidents; Clarifying the role and duty of a President-Elect.

• Part 5; Bylaw 7 - Meetings of Club Members. To reflect the current twice monthly meeting cycle. and specify when the AGM is held.

• Part 8; Bylaw 13 - Committees - Standing and Special Committees.Simplifying and making the responsibilities of Committees less descriptive and prescriptive.

ROSEVILLE CHASE ROTARY FUND RAISING ACTIVITIES6 APRIL AND 22 MAY 2019

MESSAGE FROM FUND RAISING COMMITTEEWe have two very important fundraising events coming up:-1. A wine and cheese tasting evening; 6 April, Roseville School, 2. A Golf Day 22 May at Roseville Golf Club. Our ability to successfully meet our fundraising targets for 2018-2019 will largely depend on the success of these events.

Could you please actively support these initiatives and:-• put the Wine and Cheese Tasting dates in your calendars straight away;• ask your friends, family or other contacts to come to the Wine and Cheese Tasting; • let me or Greg have confirmation asap that you are able to come to the Wine and Cheese Tasting and email contact details for any guests that will or may be coming so that we can include them in a mailing list for the event; and• let me, Cliff or Richard have any contacts that you might have who would or might be prepared to sponsor the Golf Day or a hole or provide prizes.

Wine and Cheese Tasting Evening - SATURDAY 6 APRIL Funds raised from the evening will go to the funding of the Club’s youth programs.

The evening, which will be generally conducted by Wine Selectors, will commence with a presentation on Australian wines and its regions followed by a wine tasting of 12 wines (across reds, whites, rose and sparkling) matched to 6 different cheeses with tasting notes. With a range of over 500 varieties, wine can be purchased on the evening and also ordered through the online website www.wineselectors.com.au.

There will be a charge of $40 to cover some costs and for fundraising. A high light of the evening will be the raffle of a brand new Mercedes provided by Mercedes Benz North Shore for a weekend from Friday to Monday! The raffle will also have as minor prizes 2 cases of wine donated by Wine Selectors

The evening will be also promoted Rotary, Friends of Rotary, Probus, local schools,and local community groups including the Scouts.


Golf Day - 22 May, Roseville Golf

ClubThe date and time for the event is being negotiated with Roseville Golf Club.

It is planned as an 18 hole Ambrose event with a shotgun start at 7.30am (fuelled by a bacon and egg roll). A sit down 2 course lunch at 12:00 provided. Fundraising will include raffles / auctions. The event will finish at around 2:30pm.

The success of the day as a fundraiser will depend on obtaining a major sponsor and minor sponsors of individual holes and of prizes.

Sponsors are urgently needed if we are to poceed with this event. If you have any suggestions for sponsors, please let us know and we will contact them.

Fundraising will go to the the Pink Ladies at Royal North Shore Hospital for the new MRI Head Coil.

GRAFFITI BUSTERS AT WORK

The RCRC Graffiti Busters Team were out on patrol again on Thursday 7th February – despite the 30 degrees and high humidity,

Peter Lefmann and Peter Lewis hit about 10 sites and eliminated approx. 10 sq metres of graffiti, over the 3 hour period.

They visited Echo point (and can report that our picnic areas look in good shape and are graffiti and litter free!), Roseville shops area and a couple of sites in Lindfield – including the Cromehurst School wall.

MEETING ON 25 MARCHDEBATE AT LINDFIELD ROTARY - 7. 00 PM

Monday 25 March, we are visiting the Lindfield Rotary Club for a resumption of the debates that we used to have against that club some years ago.

The composition of our team is being kept under tight raps in case there is any attempt by the Lindfield members ( or even our own members) to indulge in a little side wagering to sway the result.

Our Zone Assistant DG Fiona Jenkins has accepted an invitation to be adjudicator and she is not accepteing any “brown paper bags” either.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY, SUNDAY MARCH 3

Our Rotary Club has registered again to take part in Clean Up Australia Day (CUAD).

The date for your calendar is SUNDAY MARCH 3. All volunteers are welcome! Volunteers please advise me early – so that we can plan our attack.

Our plan will be to have a few hours (as needed) on the Sunday morning. (time to be arranged – but probably

08:00 start or maybe 09:00 given it is a Sunday)

Our designated site is the Echo Point Park, Roseville Chase. (We usually also cover the area down Babbage Road and under Roseville Bridge).

The local scouts will be joining us. The scouts are considering launching some canoes to help access the waterways, foreshores etc.

We also have a Church group with LOTS of members also registering to join us.Potentially the extra (church group) hands will be far more than we need (depending on RCRC response) – so I am asking for suggestions of nearby sites that we can get them to address.

The sites need to be in the nearby area so that we have a joint, co-ordinated approach. The proposed site(s) also need to have some litter/rubbish pollution so that the volunteers have some worthwhile work to reward their efforts.Nothing more un-rewarding than to spend time on CUAD at a location that is pristine and requires no clean-up!!!

Bobbin Head Cycle classic (Bobbo) Sunday 24 March 2019 The 8th Bobbo is being organised by the Rotary Clubs of St Ives, Ku-ring-gai, Turramurra and Wahroonga.

It is the premier cycling event in Sydney.

Some key statistics from the 2018 event. • 2,500 cyclists participated and raised $200,000 of which 50% was donated to our charity partner, Lifeline. • The other 50 % was donated to the charities supported by the Rotary clubs organising the event. These charities are: Cromehurst Foundation, Eagle RAPS, The Hornsby Women’s Shelter, Bo Hospital, PLC Shore Sony Foundation, Hornsby Connect and KYDS. • Over 500 volunteers were involved to ensure the safety of the cyclists. There are 4 ride distances being 27km, 57km, 80km and 104km. The cost to participate varies with each ride.

1. It’s important to have a woman who helps at home, cooks from time to time, cleans up, and has a job.

2. It’s important to have a woman who can make you laugh.

3. It’s important to have a woman who you can trust, and doesn’t lie to you.

4. It’s important to have a woman who is good in bed, and likes to be with you.

5. It’s very, very important that these four women do not know each other or you could end up dead like me.
