GUEST SPEAKER Philip Holliday

B.Sc. (Hons) University of TeessideChief Operating Officer and Harbour Master SydneyPhilip joined Sydney Ports Corporation in May 2011 as Executive General Manager, Operations and Harbour Master.He has been in his current role of Chief Operating Officer and Harbour Master, Sydney following the amalgamation of the Sydney, Newcastle and Port Kembla port corporations in 2014.

In this role he is responsible for leading Sydney port operations including pilotage, vessel traffic services, marine operations, security and hydrographic survey services.

Philip is also responsible for the Port Authority’s operational and commercial management of cruise operations.Philip has spent his entire career in the shipping and ports industries, starting as a 16 year old cadet when he joined Ropner Shipping Services and later moving to Souter Shipping where he gained his Class 1 (FGN) Masters certificate.

In 1998, Philip joined the UK’s largest port operator, Associated British Ports (ABP) in a port operations role. Following a number of roles within ABP he became the Harbour Master for the ABP Port of Southampton and the Marine Advisor for the group’s 21 UK ports.

Philip is currently Chair of the Ports Australia’s Port Operations Working Group and took a lead role in the development of the Australian Port Marine Safety Management Guidelines.

Port Authority of New South Wales (Port Authority) is a state owned corporation which manages the navigation, security and operational safety needs of commercial shipping in Sydney Harbour, Port Botany, Port Kembla and the ports of Newcastle, Eden and Yamba.

The primary role and responsibilities of Port Authority of New South Wales includes:• safe navigation of shipping movements within each port• management of harbour/port approaches and channels• pilotage (marine pilot safely navigating a ship in and out of a port)• port security• safety of port operations• emergency response including the clean-up of spills in the marine environment• administration of the dangerous goods regulation contained in Part 11 of the repealed Dangerous Goods Regulation 1999 preserved by the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011

Port Authority manages and operates the ports at Glebe Island, White Bay, Eden and Yamba and has the role of Harbour Master in all NSW ports. Each Harbour Master is appointed under section 85 of the Marine Safety Act 1998 (NSW). The general function of a Harbour Master is outlined in section 88 of the Marine Safety Act and can be summarised as having ‘powers to direct and control the movement, entry and exit of vessels within port areas’.

Port Authority is also the lead agency for responses to maritime incidents in coastal waters stretching from Fingal Head, Port Stephens to Gerroa, Seven Mile Beach, south of Port Kembla.

Port Authority owns and manages common user berths at Glebe Island, White Bay and the Overseas Passenger Terminal. Port Authority also provides land on long term lease adjacent berths on Glebe Island.

Sydney Harbour cruise facilities at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, at Circular Quay and White Bay Cruise Terminal are owned and managed by Port Authority.

PRESIDENT’S REPORTWe often say some of the best speakers are our own members and this was true at the last meeting when Ian Robertson updated us on his career in IT and an insight into the developments in communications and technologies and in particular the security systems now and what we can look forward to when we walk through the airports.

I again remind you of our BBQ commitment on Sunday 22nd October between 10.00 and 2.00 at the Ku-ring-gai Art Centre and their event in the mural unveiling of ‘Telling Our Stories with clay created by local children. It’s not a big fund raiser for us but an ideal time and event to promote Rotary and our club.

The Australian Rotary Health Dinner is to be held on Thursday 19th October at Dooleys Catholic Club 24 Johns Road Lidcombe at a cost of $50 per head.President Peter

LAST WEEKS SPEAKER - PP IAN ROBERTSON

PP Ian Robertson shared with us his diverse career through engineering, communications and information technology, and the emerging sophisticated security systems which Ian explained will be common in Australian Airports in the near future. The developments in this area of security are quite incredible and airport screening will identify any objects, substances or thing that isn’t part of a persons natural physical structure.

The control of advertising and game play at sporting events is also very complex and involved, and Ian took us through what occurs in the control box at a SWANS football match. So to is the ability to manage Crowd spects where the technology can now record “family units” at a game and through that identify the adults of a group from whci a youngster may have wandered away and become lost - through the technology the adult group and youngster can be brought together very quickly.

All a bit of “big brother is watching you” but used appropriately, and not by groups with evil or illegal intent, assists in enhancing our community security and safety.

Thanks Ian for the fscinating presentation and for exposing us to the development in, and use of technology, in the numerous areas of our lives.

JOHN GOH - “Children can do more.”

John Goh has been the Principal of Merrylands East Public School, NSW, Australia for the past 12 years and the Fairfield Primary Principals President for the past 4 years. His school serves 40 different language backgrounds in a school of 380- students and one of eight Social Ventures Australia National Bright Spot Schools. John has formed organisational partnerships to provide social capital as a support for student learning at Merrylands East Public School. Through creative and innovative technological programs, students have embraced 21st century skills in open and agile learning environments with fleixble school hours. John recently spoke at TedX Sydney about the use of technology in education. Some of John’s recent major achievements include a Public Education Foundation Harvard Club Australia Scholarship to study at Harvard University (2013) and being a finalist in the Pride of Australia Awards (2012). In 2009, John’s school received the Director General’s School Achievement Award and the United Nations World Environment Day Award. John is a frequent user of social media to engage community in education dialogue and sharing of practice. In 2014 John received an award from the Australian College of Educators for outstanding leadership in the use of social media to engage educators and community.

KU-RING-GAI ARTS CENTRE - BBQ - 22 OCTOBER 2017

Ku-ring-gai Art Centre Bancroft Ave Roseville (next door to Roseville Girls College) in the park.

We are providing the BBQ for their mural unveiling ‘ Telling Our Stories in Clay’.It’s on Sunday 22nd October between 10.00 and 2.00 pm.We will need about 6 members on at any one time. A roster won’t be drawn up but we will need attendance throughout the day in an under covered area.John Hartley and I will do the set up. The Centre will provide BBQ, Tables and chairs.This will be a very pleasant service project and you are invited to wander the gallery and show.


The District Governor Nominating sub-Committee is responsible for identifying suitably qualified Rotarians and selection of a Rotarian for the office of District Governor. Election of the District Governor Nominating sub-CommitteeMembers shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting from each of the designated Clusters of Administrative Zones.

Each member of the sub-Committee must be a member of a Rotary Club in the District and hold or have held the office of President of a Rotary Club.Each Club may nominate not more than one Rotarian for the Cluster/Administrative Zone in which it is placed. Nominations shall close at the office of the District Governor on Friday, 27 October 2017. If more than one nomination is received from any Cluster/Administrative Zone a ballot shall be held at which only the voting delegates from the Clubs within the Cluster/Administrative Zone shall be eligible to vote. PDG Gina Growden, Chairman of the District Governor Nominating sub-Committee, would be delighted to receive nominations from suitably qualified representatives.

The aim of Graffiti Removal Day is to highlight the problem of graffiti and encourage people to volunteer their time to remove and prevent graffiti.Graffiti Removal Day will take place on Sunday 29 October 2017.

Peter Lewis will provide more details regarding the site selected for our club to concentrate on, and will be calling for volunteers for the day.

2018 RYLA AND RYPEN PARTICIPANTS NOMINATIONS CLOSE 31 OCTOBER

Youth Services Director Ted Anderson is seeking nomination proposals from members for participants for the 2018 RYLA and RYPEN programs. Details are as follows; CONTACT IAN FRASER WITH ANY NOMINATIONS

RYLA is a mind opening 7-day program aimed at producing Australia’s next generation of leaders. You will meet life-changing people, hear inspiring stories and develop skills through challenges and activities designed to put you through your paces.Each day at RYLA is based around a theme, and consists of several speakers on theory or inspiration from their life experience. The day is balanced out with large-scale

activities that allow you to put your leadership into practice. Age range is 18-27 with atleast one year out of High School.

The Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) in Rotary International District 9685 is a Youth Leadership conference for young people who are between 15 and 17 AND are year 9, 10 and 11 students. The conference is a weekend long camp designed at developing young people’s potential through a mixture of lecture style sessions and adventure-based learning.

RYPEN is designed for students who are seen as the upcoming leaders in your school, not those students who are already leading and achieving amazing things or those at the bottom end, but those students who just need a bit of a push and a confidence boost to start achieving at their full potential.Closing date for nominations is 31 October. Amendment of Competition Rules Certification of the Member’s Attendance Competition have been received from the “INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNAL SUPERVISING ALGEBRAIC, LITERATURE and LOGIC COMPETITIONS, its REGULATIONS AND PARTICIPATION’ (known by the acronym “ITS ALL CRAP”), subject to inclusion of a fairness condition.After due consideration by the Members Attendance Competition Judiciary, the following amendment to the rules have been gazetted, effective from the date of publication of this Bulletin;“No member may win the Members Attendance Competition at more than two consecutive meetings, nor more than four times in any Rotary year”.

Competition entries will be published in the Bulletins for 10 and 24 October 2017, and a word version also sent to all members.
