PARTNERS WELCOME
GUEST SPEAKER - LINDSAY MAY
“SYDNEY TO HOBART YACHT RACES”
Lindsay will talk about the 2017 Sydney Hobart Yacht race which he did as navigator on Kialoa II.
She was built 1967 and took line honours in the 1971 Hobart and won many races around the world for her original owner Jim Kilroy, the famous US yachtsman of Kialoa 1 to Kialoa 5 fame.
She was bought by a Sydney businessman in 2016, lying in Portugal and after a refit in the UK Lindsay and the crew raced the 2017 Fastnet Race, then the owner and 6 crew mates sailed her from the UK to Sydney between September to November taking 3 months.
She then competed in the 2017 Hobart and after the 2018 Hobart she will sail to San Diego for the July 2019 TransPac race to Honolulu. Then back to Sydney for the 2019 Hobart, then off to the northern hemisphere to resail over the next decade all the races she did in her heydays in the US, UK, Europe and The Mediterainian.
Lindsay is a member of the Lane Cove Rotary Club.

PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORTLast meeting we heard the Hon Barry Mahoney speak on the role and life of a district judge and some glimpses of the activities with his friend of many years ,Norm Gibson.
This week Lindsay May ,a member of Lane Cove Club will talk on his experiences over many years of sailing in off shore yacht races.
Tonight Stuart and Sandy ,Ted and Meg will be attending .It will be an opportunity to recognise their long membership and service to the club. We hope that many of the partners will be at the meeting.
The sausage BBQ at Bunnings Belrose was busy ,especially the middle shift. We made just over $1500 profit .At present we have no further allocations at either store .We have allowed for another 4 BBQ s in the budget.
I attended a meeting at the Roseville Arts Centre re the Sensory Garden They are going for a grant to fund the garden I am helping progress the design and to get an accurate cost. Rotary has made no firm commitment They need to raise 20 percent of the cost This will consist of probono consultant fees ,possible government grants and donations inkind. WHERE IS STUART!!
At the next meeting Chatswood will be present. The speaker will be Duncan Lapsely continuing with his description of the construction of Barangaroo. Also there will be a short presentation on the head coil.
John Hartley is getting together 6 students to go to RYPEN.We are also looking for some one to go to RLYA Does any member have any suggestions,( Can someone explain this to Norm)
Of great importance ,we will need to have a discussion on the future of the club.
Richard Green
President.

LAST MEETING - 11th SEPTEMBER 2018THE HON BARRY MAHONEY QC
Our speaker this was a retired District Court judge who shared his experiences across many NSW district courts , the hours required by the jobs and the type of matter he presided over.
These tales were intriguing enough but his reflection on people and geographic idiosyncrasies of NSW that was gripping.
However, I was most struck by the empathy he demonstrated to the people that had come before his court and his willingness to be fair , equitable and honest in his adjudications.
A great presentation enjoyed by all.
Ian Garrard

MEETING 23rd OCTOBER 2018 ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION
GUEST SPEAKER– PROFESSOR PHILIP O’CONNELL
Previous Dinner Bulletins have carried the story of a kidney organ donation to the grandson of Maurie and De Stack, from Taree.
As a former District Governor, Maurie is seeking to mobilise all Rotary Clubs in Australia to urge families to register and discuss their organ and tissue donation decisions to help save more lives.
We are very fortunate to have Professor O’Connell as our Guest Speaker, an international expert on organ transplant research and on the critical need for organ and tissue donations. More than 1,500 Australians are currently awaiting transplant treatment.
Professor O’Connell is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, Director of Transplantation at Westmead Hospital and a founding Director of the Centre for Transplant and Renal Research at the Westmead Institute of Medical Research.
Professor O’Connell is a Past President of the international professional body - The Transplantation Society and was a guest speaker at the Rotary International Convention in Seoul in May 2016.
He was a member of the Australian Government Organ Donor Task Force that recommended the establishment of the Australian Organ and Tissue Authority to oversee organ donation in Australia. He is committed to the establishment of ethical solutions to the world wide organ shortage.
This is an ideal opportunity for us, our families and friends to hear what we need to know about making a decision that may help save more lives.
Please bring as many visitors as you can to give this important speaker a strong audience. Let Avis or Neil know if you intend to bring guests as soon as you can so that we can have an early gauge of numbers.
We have informed many Clubs in the District of Professor O’Connell’s evening and invited their members, partners and friends to attend out meeting. For catering purposes, heir attendance numbers must be received by FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER, 2018.

ROTARY CLUB OF CHATSWOOD70TH ANNIVERSAY
The Rotary Club of Chatswood Inc was chartered on 29 July, 1948 and has been continuously active in its communities for over the last 70 years.
On Friday 30 November 2018, the club will be celebrating its 70 years of Rotary. We have enjoyed the company of the Chatswood Rotarians at some of our meetings over the past year, and when we attended their meeting earlier this year.
Full details of the anniversary dinner will be provided in due course by the Chatswood Club, but members are requested to diarise the date now so that you wont have any conflicts of commitments if you intend attending the dinner.
On Sunday 21 October 2018 It’s time to take ownership.
It’s time to be proud. It’s time to Love Where We Live by taking part in Graffiti Removal Day! The aim of Graffiti Removal Day is to highlight the problem of graffiti across NSW and encourage people to volunteer to remove and prevent graffiti. Graffiti vandalism costs the NSW Government and residents more than $300 million every year and it has to stop.
The results speak for themselves – • Since its inception in 2012, the number of GRD volunteers has i ncreased from 597 to over 1800 in 2017. • In its first year, 100 sites were nominated. In 2017 volunteers removed graffiti from 428 nominated sites. Overall, roughly 120,000sqm of graffiti has been removed by GRD volunteers since the inception of the event. That equals a community service value of about $8.8 million value in savings for private owners and the Government.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA)CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Its time to think about young people who may be suitable to, and benefit from, attendance at RYLA in January next year.
RYLA is an award that a Rotary Club gives to celebrate and reward the outstanding
contribution of one or more young persons aged between 21 and 27 in the local community.
RYLA is a week-long, live-in “life changing” experience for 90+ young adults who are in the early stages of their career - sponsored by District 9685 Rotary Clubs.
This week-long RYLA experience is an intensive time of nonstop activity and interaction.
RYLA is held in January each year. Applicants need to be prepared to research current issues and seek solutions through debate and planning. This is a rewarding week of teamwork that can be taxing for some.Applicants are nominated, interviewed and sponsored by the Roseville Chase Rotary Club.
How to apply? Applications are available online or you can download a copy from the website: www.d9685ryla.org.au
More information is available at www.RYLA.rotarydistrict9685.org.au
Every member is encouraged to think about any one they consider may be an appropriate nomination for this Award.
Please advise David Brand with the name of anyone who you consider could benefit from attandance at RYLA 2019, so that he can follow up with contact and interview of them, to determine if they would be a suitable nomination from this Club.
