Outram School Newsletter Volume 1 Number 2 – 11 February 2016 OUTRAM SCHOOL VISION – A school where children strive for excellence, love learning, develop their passions and reach their potential Dear Parents Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa. With Waitangi Day ‘Mondayised’, a shortened week but a busy one for all. A lot of our effort this week has been centred around the organisation for the upcoming Araitiuru Marae visits, with two of our learning teams visiting next week and the third in the week following. The senior team is also deep in preparation for their Week 4 Waihola Day, with most of the students now allocated their selected options for the day. Added to our outdoor education planning for Term 1, preparations are also in hand for the Year 4 Sidey Camp. Our Year 7 and 8 students have also been very busy preparing their applications for the 2016 Student Council and other leadership roles. We look forward to selecting and announcing our senior student leaders for the year. The Allen Centre has hit the ground running. The amount of interest and engaged activity generated by our newly appointed Allen Centre Educator, Mrs Bremner, has been very evident to all. All junior and middle team classes are now well into the Allen Centre programme scheduled during class time. The senior programme gets under way next week. Intervals and lunchtimes as usual are incredibly busy, with the Allen Centre ‘bubbling’ with a range of productive activity. The first Friends of Outram School meeting was held on Tuesday. The staff and I are grateful for the continuing support provided by this dedicated team. Amongst the funding approved for 2016 was a provision for junior swimming lessons with Donna Millar. This programme will be offered to Room 2, 3, 4 and selected Year 3 students. It will run through Week 6 and Week 7. I am sure all parents of junior children appreciate the benefit of the small group swimming lessons being offered. Wednesday Sausages A decision from Tuesday’s FOS meeting was that for 2016 the regular Wednesday sausage sizzles will be handed over to the school and Room 5. Funds raised will be used to support the Outdoor Adventure Programme we are developing for our Year 7 and 8 students. This will be designed as a pathway attached to the CAPES programme and will differentiate CAPES at Year 7 / 8. A Term 1 order form goes home with this newsletter and casual orders will be accepted up to 9.00am on Wednesday mornings. An apology for the small price increase; the new charge is in line with the prices charged at most sausage fundraisers. Complaints Procedures Included in this newsletter is a copy of our current Complaints Procedures. This is sent home at the start of each school year, to provide parents and caregivers with an understanding of the process to follow, if an issue does arise. As a general rule of thumb, talk to your child’s classroom teacher first. 11 February 16 February 17 February 23 February 26 February 8 March 21 March 23 March 25 March 28 March 29 March 30-31 March 11-15 March 15 March New entrant info meet Marae Visit Snr Team Marae Visit Mid Team Marae Visit Jnr Team Snr Team Waihola Day Goal setting Interviews Otago Anniversary Day Snr Swimming sports Good Friday Easter Monday Easter Tuesday Yr 4 Camp-Waikouaiti Bike Week Duathlon School contact details: 1 Beaumaris Street, Outram. Dear Parents Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa. With Waitangi Day ‘Mondayised’, a shortened week but a busy one for all. A lot of our effort this week has been centred around the organisation for the upcoming Araitiuru Marae visits, with two of our learning teams visiting next week and the third in the week following. Enrichment and Extension Opportunities 2016 Also arriving home with Year 4 to Year 8 students is information on the ICAS, Maths Achievement Challenges and Science Award programmes for 2016. I get a great deal of pleasure working with the students who undertake these programmes and enjoy their success. I hope those looking for an extra academic challenge consider participating in one or more of the available options. Rodeo / Country Fair Volunteers I am sure all of you are now aware that the New Zealand National Rodeo Championships are being held in Outram over the weekend of 5-6 March. Outram School has been provided with the opportunity to organise and run the ‘Country Fair’ that will run alongside the Rodeo. The stall to be run by the Outram Board of Trustees will be a Sausage and Hamburger barbecue over both days. To make this work, we need a team to cook and serve. It will definitely be a case of many hands make light work and a few hours offered should provide good reward for the school and students. A form is provided with this newsletter for parents/caregivers to indicate their availability to help. Thank you in anticipation of a strong team of helpers for the weekend’s events. Week 2 and it is all go! I am sure many of you will be involved in the class and team activities that are planned for the next few weeks. Thank you for your ongoing support. I look forward to our first Friday assembly of the year to be held tomorrow – Room 9’s presentation, introduction of Dylan Walker, our new guitar teacher, the first round of merit certificates, our official welcome to all our new pupils and of course a ‘happy birthday’ for all our January and start of February birthdays. See you in the hall at 2.20 pm. Nga mihi nui

Chair Report

Just a quick note regarding the BOT elections that were mentioned in last week’s newsletter. A term on the Board is generally for 3 years. Currently the Board holds mid-term or staggered elections. This essentially means an election every 18 months with 3 members of the Board standing down while the other 2 members remain until the next election. The Board at its last meeting decided that the staggered election process would be replaced with a triennial term. What this means for the current Board is that all parent representative positions (5) will come up this election and all members from then will have a straight 3 year term. If you have any questions or queries please contact any of the current Board members or either send me an email or give me a call on the numbers below. Kind regards. Craig Brown.
