Michele’s NoteThere is no place like Chicago
in the summer! I truly believe thatChicagoans, more than residentsof most cities, truly appreciatesummer and take advantage of thewarm weather and all that the cityhas to offer. We know that oursummer days are numbered! Afterthe seemingly endless months ofcold weather and the non-existentspring this year, it is nice to finallyhave sunshine and warmth. I lovethe hot weather and wouldpersonally like to see temperaturesin the high 80s every day!
To me, everyone just seemshappier in the summer! I loveseeing everyone sitting outsideand enjoying time with theirfamilies. Recently I read an articleabout a study that reveals a linkbetween age and happiness.Research found that many olderadults are actually happier withdaily life than those who areyounger. The research, publishedin the the Journal of ConsumerResearch, showed that while allage groups reported happinessfrom extraordinary experiences, the results also indicated thathappiness from ordinaryexperiences was more commonamong older people.
“Young people actively seekingto define themselves find itparticularly rewarding to
accumulate extraordinaryexperiences that mark theirprogression through lifemilestones. On the other hand, once people are older and haveestablished a better sense of whothey are, the experiences they viewas self-defining are just as likely toinclude the routine daily eventsthat reveal how they like to spendtheir time” wrote authors AmitBhattacharjee (Dartmouth) andCassie Mogilner (UPenn).
The perception of happinesschanges over time; youngerpeople are more rewarded byfeeling excited and older adults geta bigger boost of satisfaction frompeace and calm. Older adultsinvest energy in what is trulymeaningful to them.
Although the sample used inthis study was small, I see thisevident with my own parents, who prefer to be with us doingnormal activities rather than goingon trips all the time. This certainlyhelps to explain my mother’shesitation traveling to Germanywith us a few months ago! I willremember this on our next visit!
So, enjoy these summermonths with your families -whether it be on an adventure, orthe daily routine of sitting on theporch enjoying the sunshine!

Mind Exercise Games!Mind Exercise Games for Seniors
The brain is a complex organthat, like other muscles in thebody, elderly parents need to keepstimulated by exercising the brainwith games and crafts in order toenhance the growth anddevelopment of new nerve cellsand neural function. Exercisingthe brain helps:
• Reduce loss of gray matter(the nuts and bolts ofmemory)
• Promotes neurogenesis(development of new braincells)
• Improves attention spansand the ability to concentrate
• Strengthens brain synapses(communication pathways)
• Increases blood flow (moreoxygen means healthier cells)
Okay, so who doesn’t want toincrease brain function, regardlessof age? Exercising the brain ormind can be achieved in anumber of ways, including butnot limited to:
• Learn a new skill – This canbe a language, a hobby or aconcept. The morechallenging, the better. Takeup painting. Learn the piano.Take a community class oncrime scene investigation. Dosomething to stimulate, activate and exercise yourbrain to think in new ways.
• Create a scrapbook – Thistype of elder activity helpsrebuild memories andmemory skills that may havegotten rusty over the years.
• Socialize! – Socializing orgroup activity for the elderlyis a mental activity! Engagein social interactions at leastweekly, more frequently ifpossible.
• Laugh! – Laughter really isone of the best medicinesaround. A good belly laugheveryday helps to releasedopamine, that ‘fell good’hormone in the brain.Laughter also helps stimulatethe brain and enhanceslearning.
• Engage in ‘Thinking Games’– Such as crossword puzzles,Sudoku or chess.
