This year, I am extremely pleased to announce an overall resident satisfaction score of 95% and an overall family satisfaction score of 92%. Of the 24 questions asked in the survey, we scored over 90% in 21 questions from residents and 16 questions from families. It is always our goal to achieve 100% satisfaction in all categories, but I am proud of our scores and our wonderful staff who serve our residents and families. Thank you to all of you who responded to our survey. I appreciate and review all comments, and we do use this as a tool to evaluate and improve our services. Please see me if you have any questions regarding our survey. It is time for our annual employee awards. This is a chance for residents and families to recognize outstanding service from our staff. Please stay tuned for your opportunity to vote. It is winter, so we are in the middle of flu season. We always want to maintain best practices and limit any instances of flu that may occur in the community. To this end, we ask that you please avoid visiting the community if you are experiencing any signs of the flu or other illness. Remember that the best way to control the spread of illness is to wash your hands frequently. Please help us to protect our residents, staff, and visitors. HypothyroidismHypothyroidism— also called

underactive thyroid— is the mostcommon thyroid disorder. Ithappens when your thyroid glanddoesn’t produce enough thyroidhormone, which is essentialbecause thyroid hormone helpsregulate important bodyprocesses, such as yourmetabolism. But with low thyroidfunction, these body processesslow down.

The prevalence of thyroiddisorders increases with age andnumerous morphological andphysiological changes of thethyroid gland during the processof aging are well-known. It is to bestressed that the clinical course ofthyroid diseases in the elderlydiffers essentially from thatobserved in younger individuals, because symptoms are moresubtle and are often attributed tonormal aging.

Hypothyroidism symptomsusually develop incredibly slowly;it can take years for them to showup. Also, some symptoms mimicsymptoms of other diseases, suchas fibromyalgia and rheumatoidarthritis.

Key hypothyroidism symptomsinclude constipation, depression, and fatigue. Pale, dry skin;sensitivity to cold; joint pain;elevated cholesterol levels; brittlefingernails and hair; andunexplained weight gain, memoryproblems, and loss of appetite, are

other common symptoms.Multiple factors may contribute

to hypothyroidism, including:• Hashimoto’s thyroiditis:

This autoimmune disease isthe most common cause ofhypothyroidism.

• medications: Certainmedications, such as lithium, can cause hypothyroidism.

• pregnancy: Hypothyroidismcan develop during or afterpregnancy.

• treatment forhyperthyroidism: Peoplewho have hyperthyroidism(overactive thyroid) aretreated with radioactiveiodine therapy, whichimpairs thyroid function andcan cause hypothyroidism.

• thyroid surgery: If yourthyroid gland is removed, you can’t make thyroidhormone, so you’ll need totake thyroid hormonereplacement.

You can live a full, normal lifeif you continue to take yourmedicine to controlhypothyroidism. A healthylifestyle—incorporating nutritiousfoods and moderate exercise—canalso help you better manage yourhypothyroidism.

You may also need regularblood tests to see if you need toadjust your levothyroxine dose.
