They should give the money to the poor!” In my experience the people who make that criticism usually don’t give very much money to either the church or the poor. My other worry about the criticism is that it was Judas Iscariot who complained about the rich ointment being used in the worship of Jesus--saying that the money should be given to the poor. Jesus corrected Judas saying, “The poor you have with you always,” and he commended the woman for her extravagant offering of worship. The fact of the matter is that we should live such extravagant lives of generosity that we have the resources to both love God through beautiful worship and love our neighbor through beautiful service to the poor. We should be extravagant in the beauty and fine quality of the things we use for worship. In the Old Testament God himself commanded that the tabernacle and the temple in Jerusalem should be richly ornamented. The people were asked to create a magnificent temple for God, and to create beautiful sacred vessels and vestments. Nevertheless, we do need balance in these matters. A beautiful building, beautiful vestments and vessels for worship don’t need to be extravagantly expensive and the other needs of a church community and ministry must also be weighed up when deciding the way forward. In designing our new church we have made every effort to build a beautiful and worthy church on a limited budget. I think we have been very successful. The final cost of the church—including the furniture, artwork and fittings—will be under $6m. Most observers have been shocked that we have built such a beautiful church for such a low cost. We have accomplished this by purchasing beautiful used items which were salvaged from closed churches. The stained glass windows are one example, but we have also salvaged a crucifix, statues, sacred vessels, candlesticks, and more. All these items are high quality, but we were good stewards of your donations by purchasing them at a fraction of the cost of buying new. As we move into our new church in a few weeks’ time part of the joy is that we have done something beautiful for God, but at a decent price.
