When I say "little Holy Trinity" I mean a threefold aspect of life that has its origins in the Most Holy and Undivided Trinity, but which we experience in everyday life. This "little Holy Trinity" is the trinity of Beauty, Truth and Goodness. We call it a "little Holy Trinity" because these three attributes are interdependent and exist in a dynamic relationship with each other. Beauty is True and Good. Goodness is Beautiful and True. Truth is Good and Beautiful. Over the next few weeks I will be explaining the importance of these three aspects of life. The first of these is beauty. The Russian writer Dostoevsky said, "Beauty will save the world." What did he mean by that? He meant that through the appre- hension of beauty we participate not only in what is beautiful, but also what is eternally true and good. In other words, through beauty we participate in the one who is the source and summit of all that is beautiful. The apprehension of beauty--whether it is the beauty of the natural world, the beauty of music, art or love--is a real participation in the eternal realm, and the promotion and preaching of this leads people and a whole culture to the sources of salvation. Beauty is undermined in our society by the love of money. We choose the cheap. We want to save money so we skip what is beautiful thinking that it is too expensive. Of course some beautiful things are expensive, but then some expensive things are not beautiful. Beauty is more elusive than a price tag. We try through beautiful architecture, liturgy, music and the arts to lead our families and children to a true apprehen- sion of beauty so we might deepen our love of God, and grow more closely in our identification with Christ. This experience of beauty in worship should then overflow into the rest of our lives so that our eyes are increasingly open to the wonders of God's love alive in the world. Your pastor, Fr.
