November 17, 2019 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Cycle C Today’s Readings

First Reading: For those who fear the name of the Lord, the sun of jus ce will arise (Malachi 3:19-20a).

Psalm: The Lord comes to rule the earth with jus ce (Psalm 98).

Second Reading: Those who are living in idleness are urged to earn their own living (2 Thessalonians 3:7-12).

Gospel: Jesus foretells the destruc on of Jerusalem, the persecu on of his followers (Luke 21:5-19). The English transla on of the Psalm Responses from the Lec onary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, Interna onal Commission on English in the Liturgy Corpora on. All rights reserved.

Readings for the Week Monday: 1 Mc 1:10-15, 41-43, 54-57, 62-63; Ps 119:53, 61, 134, 150, 155, 158; Lk 18:35-43 Tuesday: 2 Mc 6:18-31; Ps 3:2-7; Lk 19:1-10 Wednesday: 2 Mc 7:1, 20-31; Ps 17:1bcd, 5-6, 8b, 15; Lk 19:11-28 Thursday: 1 Mc 2:15-29; Ps 50:1b-2, 5-6, 14-15; Lk 19:41-44 Friday: 1 Mc 4:36-37, 52-59; 1 Chr 29:10bcd, 11-12; Lk 19:45-48 Saturday: 1 Mc 6:1-13; Ps 9:2-4, 6, 16, 19; Lk 20:27-40 Sunday: 2 Sm 5:1-3; Ps 122:1-5; Col 1:12-20; Lk 23:35-43

Life Is Hard, But Have No Fear Today’s readings take a fearless look at reality and reach a conclusion that we all know: life is hard. The prophet Malachi preaches fire and brimstone, warning us that evildoers will perish in flames. Saint Paul offers his own warning to the Thessalonians: keep busy, but never become a busybody. He reminds Chris ans that the apostles themselves worked in “toil and drudgery” as a model for how we ought to contribute to our community. The Gospel returns to the apocalyp c tone of Malachi, describing the u er chaos of the end- mes. We will know the end is near when violence, catastrophe, and hatred dominate the earth. But we must not fear! God’s saving plan brings peace to our hearts. Malachi speaks of the sun’s “healing rays,” and Jesus himself promises to protect every hair on our heads. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures From Our Tradition We are faced with strong and disturbing readings today that hold a certain fascina on, since they seem at first glance to be blueprints for future inevitable wars and hardship. A fundamentalist interpreta on focuses on this aspect. Yet we hear them at our Sunday celebra on of the Eucharist, which infuses them with hope and op mism. Rather than dreading the future, today’s liturgy assures us that God is with us in all of life’s inevitable trials, and that we have a role in shaping the outcome of human history. Occasionally, some Chris ans have a empted to decode these readings for an exact measure of the world’s end, but they have thus far been disappointed. “Nothing lasts forever” is a lyric from a Broadway show. Stars fall from the sky, leaves wither and fall, mountains wash into the sea, human projects and governments to er and collapse with great regularity. Today’s liturgy opposes this idea as incomplete, reminding us that Christ has made a permanent change in human history, and that life in him is life forever. Rather than invi ng us to throw in the towel, today’s liturgy strengthens us for acts of goodness and grace in our families, communi es, and world. Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Sacraments, Liturgy and Prayer No Good Deed Goes Unpunished When Jesus rose from the dead, he showed his disciples that even death will be overcome by God. In today’s Gospel, he expands that to include most of the bad things that can happen to both non-believers and disciples alike. Star ng with the destruc on of the temple in Jerusalem, Jesus men ons most of the scary things that people thought would bring the end of the world. He gives two pieces of advice. First, don’t be fooled by anyone who says this is the end or who claims to be Jesus. When Jesus comes again, there will be no doubt about who it is. Then, don’t be terrified by natural disasters or wars. We hope we would respond to disasters not with fear, but with love. Believers can voluntarily help those affected, comfort the survivors, or help rebuild their homes or schools. People have welcomed strangers into their homes a er a flood or hurricane has destroyed a neighborhood. There is a saying that “no good deed goes unpunished.” Jesus never says that his disciples would be given awards for their acts of charity. In the Gospel, he says that his disciples would be persecuted, hated, and even betrayed by their own families. Jesus has advice for that situa on, too. He tells us “not to prepare your defense,” but to let him give us the words. I suspect that he means not to worry about what you might say, lest you become scared speechless. If you let him, Jesus will “prepare” you with the scripture readings, your pastor’s homilies, and your own prayer life. All of these can help open us to the gi s of the Spirit, who helps us proclaim our faith without fear. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Homebound Ministry If you or someone you know is sick or has had surgery and cannot a end Mass for a period of me, Our Lady of the Lake has Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion that can bring the Eucharist to them. For more informa on or to schedule visits please contact Joan Bailey at 624-2936 or Bonnie Gallodoro in the Parish office at 626-5671 x 107.

Called By Name One of the ways the Voca on Ministry at Our Lady of the Lake is asking for support from our parishioners is by prayerfully considering young men and women who may be called to the Priesthood or Religious Life. Perhaps the Lord Jesus is calling him/her to consider a life of service in the Church as a Priest, Sister, Brother or Deacon. Parishioners can put forth names of poten al individuals by filling out one of the “Called by Name” cards, which are available in the Church office. These cards have been provided by the Voca on Office in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Fill out the back and place it in the collec on basket or give it to the church office. Your name is op onal. You may also email Dwight and Mary Johnston at [email protected] and give the name, phone number and email of the person you see as a good candidate.

St. Vincent de Paul Jesus tells his apostles to pray always. Our prayer is an expression of love for God, our family, our world and especially the suffering poor. Last month, your gi s enabled St. Vincent de Paul to provide $4919 in aid to 15 families with gi s of rent, food, u li es, bike transporta on and a bus cket. Thank you for your generosity and your prayers for the poor.

Tuesday Rosary As Pope St. John XXIII has said, “The Rosary is a magnificent and universal prayer for the needs of the Church, the na ons and the en re world”. Please join us in Church immediately following the 9AM Mass each Tuesday morning as our group gathers together to pray the scriptural rosary and other intercessory prayers. The scriptural rosary combines the recita on of the rosary with different scripture passages which are read before each Hail Mary. This rosary medita on offers a deeper contempla on of the life of Christ. “Among all the devo ons approved by the Church none has been so favored by so many miracles as the devo on of the Most Holy Rosary”, Pope Pius IX. For more informa on, please contact Cindy Garre at 892-6381 or thelambsli [email protected].

Commission on Persons with Disabilities All are Welcome - We have been hearing this in the Catholic Church. Yet, some parents are hesitant or may not know that it is possible for all children with disabili es to receive the Sacraments of Ini a on: Bap sm, Eucharist, and Confirma on. The NCPD states: “All members of the Body of Christ are uniquely called by God by virtue of their Bap sm. In light of this call, the Church seeks to support all in their growth in holiness, and to encourage all in their voca ons. Par cipa ng in, and being nourished by, the grace of the sacraments is essen al to this growth in holiness. Catholic adults and children with disabili es, and their families earnestly desire full and meaningful par cipa on in the sacramental life of the Church.” The Na onal Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD) has guidelines and resources readily available to help teach people with disabili es and include them in parish life. Over the years, our bell tower has been subject to weather extremes from high heat and humidity to the seldom but occasional ice or snow event. Despite our yearly maintenance, these conditions have taken a TOLL on our bells and structure. We will use funds raised for this year’s #iGiveCatholic Campaign to help with the costly repairs needed for us to continue to enjoy the daily melodious sounds. This endeavor will include the tedious process of lifting the enormous bells for structural stabilization, rust and corrosion removal and reseating of the bells. We thank you in advance for your generous support for this AP-PEAL.
