Welcome to Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU). In 2009, we began our inaugural season of Saints basketball through the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes and the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC). And what a phenomenal fi rst year it was! Our women and men’s teams made post-season playoff appearances, men’s basketball was named co-champs of the conference and Coach Russell Vanlandingham was named co-coach of the year. Plus, we claimed the conference’s highest academic honor as the recipient of the 2009-2010 RRAC GPA Award. OLLU’s student-athletes achieved the highest GPA of any member institution across all of its sports and our student -athletes who achieved a 3.0 or better were recognized as RRAC scholar-athletes -- what a terrifi c and important accomplishment. I couldn’t be more proud of our Saints!

Winning this award proves that we make it a top priority to ensure our athletes excel in the classroom above all else. We thank our coaches, faculty, staff , administration, families and friends for their role in the success of our student-athletes.

An intercollegiate athletic program can only be successful with the full-hearted support of the University community. I want to especially acknowledge the leadership and members of the Student Government Association (SGA). SGA has been behind this program from the beginning and we appreciate its members’ desire to create new traditions for students.

OLLU has a tremendous amount of school pride and having 11 competitive sports teams will only increase team spirit and spark new traditions.

Let’s have a great season — Go Saints Go!

RUSSELL vANLANdiNGHAM is in his second year at OLLU. During the inaugural season, the Saints fi nished with a 16-4 conference record and were named co-champs of the Red River Athletic Conference. He was named Co-Coach of the Year. The Saints fi nished the season at No. 1 in the conference and Division I in 3-point fi eld goals made/game; No. 1 in conference and No. 4 in Division I in scoring off ense/game; No. 1 in conference and No. 6 in Division I in steals/game. In addition, members of the NAIA athletic teams at OLLU, including four on the men’s basketball team, were named 2009-2010 RRAC GPA Champions.

Before arriving at OLLU, Vanlandingham served as assistant coach at Texas State University in San Marcos, where in 2008, he helped the team vie for a berth in postseason play; the team missed the playoff s by one game. During that year, he was instrumental in signing four of the top 40 players in Texas in his fi rst recruiting class. It was the most in one class since the school joined the NCAA’s Southland Conference. In addition, since coaching at Texas State, the Bobcats have consistently improved their win total from the previous season.

Vanlandingham has had coaching positions at McMurry University in Abilene (2005-2006 and 1996-2001) and West Texas A&M in Canyon (2001-2005). At McMurry, his alma mater, the Indians averaged 97.2 points per game, ranking sixth in NCAA Division III. McMurry’s record was 18-9 in 2005-2006 in the American Southwest Conference, and the team advanced to the semifi nals of the ASC Tournament. From 1996-2001, the Indians’ record was 122-36, and they had fi ve postseason appearances, four ASC West Division titles, two ASC championships and back-to-back berths in the NCAA Division III national tournament. While at West Texas A&M, he helped the Buff aloes to three Lone Star Conference tournament appearances and a 2003 conference title; the team’s record was 71-44.

As a player at McMurry, Vanlandingham earned All-Texas honors as a guard and was a member of the Indians’ 93-94 team, which advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA Division II National Tournament. He led McMurry in assists as both a junior and senior. His 166 assists during the 93-94 season still ranks as the fourth-most in McMurry history.

Vanlandingham received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1995 from McMurry University and a master’s degree in Sports and Recreation Management in 1999 from Hardin-Simmons University. He is originally from San Antonio, where he attended East Central High School. He and wife, Amber, have three children.

KENT MCCLURE enters his fi rst year as assistant coach for the Saints men’s basketball team. He comes to OLLU after spending three seasons as the top assistant coach for the Texas A&M University -- Kingsville Javelinas. Prior to there, he was the assistant coach at McMurry University in Abilene.

Under McClure, the Javelinas were 35-22 and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The team also had back-to-back Defensive Players of the Year, as well as a First-Team All-Conference player, a Second-Team All-Conference player and one who was named as an honorable mention.

McClure worked primarily with the Javelina guards, and coordinated the recruiting and academic progress programs for the team.

McMurry went 38-17 during his two seasons, including 33-7 in the American Southwest Conference. The team was the American Southwest Western Division co-champions in 2006-2007. One of McClure’s athletes was named First-Team All Conference.

Before arriving at McMurry, McClure served as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Hardin-Simmons, for the 2004-2005 season. Under head coach Dylan Howard, McClure helped the Cowboys to an ASC Tri-West Division championship. In addition, they had an ASC Player of the Year and a First-Team All-Conference Player.

McClure played two seasons under head coach Dennis Harp at Hardin-Simmons. He was named academic All-American Southwest Conference for the 1998-1999 and the 1999-2000 seasons.

McClure earned his undergraduate degree in Sports Fitness and a master’s degree in Education and Sports and Recreation Management from Hardin-Simmons. He is a native of Graford, Texas. He and his wife, Erin, have two sons, Keaston and Kaydon.

RUSTy KENNEdy takes over as head women’s basketball coach in 2010-11 looking to build upon the successful inaugural season. Kennedy comes to Our Lady of the Lake University from Clarendon College where, in five seasons -- 2003-05, 2007-10 -- as head women’s basketball coach/athletic director, he led the Lady Bulldogs to an 85-67 record including three trips to the post season, a team-scoring title in 2009-10 at 92.2 points per game and setting five NJCAA records. Kennedy’s career record stands at 174-132 in 10 seasons as a college head coach. In between his stints at Clarendon, Kennedy spent two seasons at North Arkansas College. In his two years at the helm of the Lady Pioneers they were a perennial top 20 team while compiling a record of 40-19; including 23-6 during the 2006-07 season while finishing region runner-up. His Northark teams finished in the WBCA-NJCAA Academic Top 25 both years including third in 2006-07 with a GPA of 3.396. Prior to coaching at Clarendon, Kennedy spent three years at NAIA member Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla. During his two years as the head coach at Bacone, Kennedy posted a 39-28 record including a 24-10 mark in 2002-2003. In 2001-2002 he was named Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for leading a young Lady Warriors’ team to a 10-6 conference record and notching 15 wins on the season. Kennedy’s teams also excelled off the floor posting back-to-back WBCA-NAIA Academic Top 25 finishes including 11th place in 2002 with a team GPA of 3.428. Prior to working at Bacone College, Kennedy served as head men’s basketball coach at Central Baptist College in Conway, Ark., where his team finished one game away from the national tournament. He also served as the school’s athletic director and was responsible for Central Baptist’s transition from a two-year to a four-year program in athletics. He also taught in the Physical Education department and coached volleyball. In 1998-1999 Kennedy worked as the assistant men’s basketball coach at his alma mater Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Okla. Working under his mentor, long-time OWU coach Rocky Kent, Kennedy helped lead the Eagles to their best season in school history and a top-25 ranking. The Eagles also averaged over 94 points per game that season finishing second in the NAIA in that category. Kennedy holds a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Exercise Science and a master’s degree in Management from Southern Nazarene University. He also had a fine playing career scoring more than 1,200 points and garnering All-Conference and All-Region honors his senior year at Oklahoma Wesleyan.

CHriSTOPHer MiNNer enters his second season at OLLU. Prior to coming to OLLU, he served for two years as women’s assistant basketball coach at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), where the team made the Heartland Conference Semi-Finals and had its first-ever conference playoff berth.

Minner primarily managed TAMIU’s defense and worked with the team on shooting and scoring. His work helped the team with a six-game improvement in the league and a five-game improvement in total wins for the season. TAMIU was ranked No. 4 in the nation in steals and No. 11 in turnover-to-assist ratio. It placed No. 1 in scoring offense, steals, forced turnovers and blocks in the conference. During his tenure, one of his players received Defensive Player of the Year and the team had two all-conference first-team selections. Coach Minner was also the men’s head golf coach at TAMIU.

Prior to TAMIU, Minner was the boys’ varsity head basketball coach at Vacaville Christian High School in California. He directed the Falcons to a 62-24 overall record, winning one Sacramento Valley Christian League (SVCL) title and one Central Valley Christian League title. In addition, he was named SVCL Coach of the Year in 2006, his team GPA was 3.42 and he had the most playoff wins for a boys’ head varsity coach.

From 2002-2005, Minner was the women’s head basketball coach for Napa Valley Community College. He was the all-time winningest coach in percentage and number of wins. Napa Valley improved from a 10-20 record in 2002 to a 16-10 mark in 2004 under Minner. He guided the team to its first state playoff berth in 2003 and its highest ranking on record in that position.

Minner received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Sonoma State University and a master’s degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from St. Mary’s College of California.
