Dear Brothers and Sisters,
It’s good to be back home aEer having been away the past two weekends. I’m
grateful to Fr. John for helping take care of everything during my vaca!on and the
!me I was away helping train parishes on the Discovering Christ program. (We had
200 people from 30 parishes aMend the training in Los Angeles, which is a wonderful
sign of what the Lord is s!rring up as the Church moves forward with the work of
evangeliza!on.)
Sadly, we say goodbye to Deacon Josh this weekend as he prepares to return
back to Rome to resume his studies. What a blessing it has been having Josh with us
this year! Josh has a generous heart and we have received much from him during his
!me at OLPH. It was a special joy for us to share in his ordina!on as a deacon and his
service at the Lord’s altar, in his preaching and in the celebra!on of the Sacrament of
Bap!sm. As we keep Josh in our prayers, we look forward to his priesthood
ordina!on here in Bal!more next year on Saturday, June 20, 2015.
This Sunday, Catholics throughout the U.S. are joining together in prayer for the
suffering Chris!ans in Iraq. In what has truly become a genocide, Chris!an families
who have lived in Iraq for centuries are being forced to convert or face death. The
Catholic Patriarch of Baghdad has shared horrendous stories of the sufferings in Iraq
as Muslim extremists aMempt to completely destroy the Chris!an faith. In the midst
of such senseless violence and hatred, we pray that peace might be restored, aware
that the use of force is some!mes the only way to stop an unjust aggressor. May the
Lord pour out His peace upon His people there, and upon all those who are suffering
around the world because of their faith, that they might be strengthened even as
many die as martyrs for their faith in Christ.

Praise and Worship Mass Coming in This Month: Beginning this month, every 4th
Sunday of the month at the 5:00pm Mass we will be offering a chance for more
worship in the style of our monthly Fes!vals of Praise (our Friday evening Holy
Hours), which have grown tremendously over the past year. The musicians that have
been leading our monthly Fes!vals of Praise will be leading the worship. Worship
will begin at 4:45pm to give us a chance to prepare even more deeply for Mass, so
that when we begin Mass at 5:00pm our hearts will be ready for all that the Lord
wants to do as we share in the Last Supper. The rest of the Mass will be more in the
style of what we’ve done at our Pentecost Vigil Mass, with the freedom to give
ourselves more completely to the Lord.

much from the children!” We provide you with training, materials, and support.
Classes begin September 28. If interested or for more informa!on, contact Lisa
Costello at [email protected].

St. Rose of Lima, (1835-1914)
Feast Day: August 23
The first canonized saint of the New World has one
characteris!c of all saints—the suffering of
opposi!on—and another characteris!c which is
more for admira!on than for imita!on—excessive
prac!ce of mor!fica!on.
She was born to parents of Spanish descent in Lima, Peru, at a time when South America was in its first century of evangelization. She seems to have taken Catherine of Siena (April 29) as a model, in spite of the objections and ridicule of parents and friends.
The saints have so great a love of God that what seems bizarre to us, and is indeed sometimes imprudent, is simply a logical carrying out of a conviction that anything that might endanger a loving relationship with God must be rooted out. So, because her beauty was so often admired, Rose used to rub her face with pepper to produce disfiguring blotches. Later, she wore a thick circlet of silver on her head, studded on the inside, like a crown of thorns.
When her parents fell into financial trouble, she worked in the garden all day and sewed at night. Ten years of struggle against her parents began when they tried to make Rose marry. They refused to let her enter a convent, and out of obedience she continued her life of penance and solitude at home as a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic. So deep was her desire to live the life of Christ that she spent most of her time at home in solitude.
During the last few years of her life, Rose set up a room in the house where she cared for homeless children, the elderly and the sick. This was a beginning of social services in Peru. Though secluded in life and activity, she was brought to the attention of Inquisition interrogators, who could only say that she was influenced by grace.
What might have been a merely eccentric life was transfigured from the inside. If we remember some unusual penances, we should also remember the greatest thing about Rose: a love of God so ardent that it withstood
ridicule from without, violent temptation and lengthy periods of sickness. When she died at 31, the city turned out for her funeral. Prominent men
took turns carrying her coffin.
