for loss and bereavement. This is a continuing group and will address all

MOUNTAINEER FOOD BANK TRUCK WILL BE AT ST. VINCENT’S ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2020 from 11am-1pm. Lisa Gonzales is in need of VOLUNTEERS to work this. Volunteers will start at 9:30am. This is an amazing opportunity for people to get items that are not stocked in the pantry. It is also a fast paced and well organized event. Each time it gets better and better. The first time roughly 80 families were served and it has grown to where 200 + families are anticipated!!!! Please if you have the time for a few short hours to come and make this happen it will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! It takes at the minimum FIFTEEN VOLUNTEERS to pull this off. Thank You in advance!!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

February is the month dedicated to the Holy Family. Though the start of the Lenten season changes within the calendar year, a fair-sized portion of February gives us a space of time between the Christmas celebrations and the increased focus on Jesus’s public life and ministry, which occurs in Lent. It is a transition from the feast of Christmas to the fasting of Lent. Therefore traditionally February has become a time to recall the Holy Family; within the Holy Family is where Jesus spent the time between his birth and embarking on his public journey.

We are begotten in the bosom of our family; in the midst of our family we grow to maturity. We are all called to live a family life, whether it be the life of a human family in this world, or the life of the supernatural family, which is the Church (through baptism), or the life of a religious family (through religious profession). Thus, we may all go to Nazareth and with profit observe the model that is offered to us, so that we may shape our lives after that example.

The life of the Holy Family at Nazareth is sketched for us in the Gospel of the feast. The entire family goes up to Jerusalem to offer the prescribed sacri-fice. There Joseph and Mary lose the child and return to Jerusalem in deep sorrow searching for Him. Eventually they find Him in the Temple, and Je-sus becomes subject to them. The life of the Holy Family is characterized by zeal for religion and prayer, and by the love that binds it together. Moreo-ver, Jesus, the Son of God, shows a respectful obedience to Joseph and Mary. "And He was subject to them." Come and observe, and learn to imitate this divine model.

The spirit of the Holy Family and its characteristic virtues are pictured for us in St. Paul's words to the Colossians (3:12-17), “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

An inspiring model, a precious instruction! A devoted family spirit and these family virtues are a precious possession both for the human family and for the supernatural family. To live a good, Christian family life requires sacrifice, the renunciation of one's own wishes, and a reasonable mortification of self. If it is to be perfect, it requires complete victory over self-love. It requires a high degree of virtue, deep piety and living faith, much prayer, and a close union with God. I pray during this Month of the Holy Family that your own families may be rejuvenated and filled with the spirit of the Holy Family of Nazareth, animated by their faith and devotion, motivated by their mutual self-sacrifice for the benefit of one another and the world.

I also thank all of you for your kindness to me on my birthday. I am working on thank you notes from Christmas and am adding to those notes to so many of you from my birthday. I ask for one more gift, patient endurance while I write of my gratitude to each person and beg you to be sure that the delay in writing is in no way an indication of a diminishment in my thanks to God of each of you, for all of you, and for my participation in this won-derful community of faith which draws together Marshall, Wetzel, and Tyler Counties into the one Church, the one family of Christ.

means a man with a million dollars as long as he is “poor in spirit.” Some even say that Christ was the poorest of the poor, whereas others state that in Christ’s

day, to be the son of a carpenter was a fairly high position on the economic ladder. Let us try to resolve these questions as we worship today.

Holy Humor:

Finding himself lost in the mountains on a cold Friday night, a man prays for the Lord’s guidance and is led to a monastery. He is served a wonderful meal of fish and chips—the finest he has ever had, in fact. He asks if may meet the cooks so he can thank them for the food. When he tells them how much he enjoyed the meal, they thank him and introduce themselves. “You’re most welcome friend. I am Brother Vincent, the fish friar, and this is Brother Paul, the chip monk.”

Advent Project: The Altar Guild would like to thank those who contributed to their Christmas Project for the Women ’s Shelter in Wheeling. Due to the generosity of our parishioners, they were able to donate 32 blankets, 63 pairs of gloves, 10 scarves, 14 winter hats, 16 pairs of socks, 4 coats and sweaters, a set of sheets, and various toiletries.

Please recycle. The Wetzel County Solid Waste Authority collects recy-

clable items each Saturday from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm at their location

at 250 North Main Street, New Martinsville. Additional information on

how to sort recyclable items is in the vestibule. Or you can contact them

The flowers at the altar are given in memory of the parents of Rob and Barbara Amos.

Mater Dolorosa is converting from the seasonal missalettes to a per-manent liturgical text book. These books will cover the readings for all three liturgical years, then start again. They will be available to be used in late February. If you’d like to purchase one of these books in memory of or in thanksgiving of loved ones or as donated by you, a book label will be put in the front cover of the book so designating. The cost is $25.00. There are envelopes in the vestibule for this purpose.
