Throughout the Easter Season, we have been hearing selections at Mass from the Acts of the Apostles. This New Testament book, which biblical scholars attribute to St. Luke, is a collection of stories about the mission-ary work of the early Church following the resurrec-tion of Jesus Christ. The Acts of the Apostles opens with an account of Jesus’ ascension and the selection of Mat-thias as the twelfth apostle, replacing Judas. Then St. Luke narrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the dis-ciples at Pentecost, an event that empowers the first Christians to proclaim the risen Lord to the whole world. In this weekend’s reading from Acts, St. Peter baptizes a Gentile centurion named Cornelius and his entire household. This passage signals an important development in the early Church; namely, the spread of Christianity beyond Jewish borders. In the Acts of the Apostles, the Holy Spirit engineers and facilitates the growth of the fledgling Church throughout the Roman Empire. This divine missionary thrust reveals the uni-versal saving will of God, that is, in the words of the First Letter of Timothy: “God wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth (I Timothy 2:4).” Peter’s address in this weekend’s text accents this point: “In truth I see that God shows no partiality. Rather, in every nation whoever fears him and acts uprightly is acceptable to him.” The circumcised believers of Jew-ish heritage who heard Peter speak were astounded that Gentiles could receive the Holy Spirit too, and be baptized into the Christian faith. But Peter responds: “can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit even as we have?” The gospel reading this weekend speaks of the main requirement of anyone who wants to follow Christ. In Jesus’ own words, “Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love….This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.” With the many graces the Holy Spirit gives us, may we all remain in the love of Christ, extending his love to all those in our circle of life!
News and Notes: News and Notes: News and Notes: News and Notes: This Saturday, May 9, we welcome the second grade children of Our Lady of the Assump-tion School and their families to the 4PM Mass at OLA for the children’s First Holy Communion celebration. Many thanks to Mary Disick and Colleen Shea, our sec-ond grade teachers at OLA School, for their work in helping to prepare our second graders for this beautiful Sacrament of Initiation! Fr. Tony and I met recently with representatives of both parishes to discuss the Mass schedule for both weekdays and weekends. A

prominent topic at that meeting was the fact that Fr. Farrell is now the only visiting priest we are able to count on week in and week out (except during the summer) to help Fr. Tony and me with the Saturday afternoon and Sunday Masses. This makes it difficult for us to take some time away for retreats and vacation or to get a substitute should either of us be sick. We also discussed the attendance statistics for weekday Masses: at the 7AM Masses on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at SMG the average attendance is 15-20 people; at the 9AM Masses on Tuesday and Thursday at OLA, the figure is 40-45 people, with a lesser amount on Saturday at 9AM. Two proposals emerged at that meeting. The first was to suspend the 5PM Sunday Mass at SMG for a period of time during the summer months; the second was to drop the Saturday morning Mass at OLA and change the weekday Mass schedule so that OLA will host the Mass at 9AM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and SMG will host the 9AM Mass on Tuesday and Thursday. 9AM seems to be a better time for most daily Mass goers in our parishes and Our Lady’s tends to have many more Mass inten-tions, so it was thought that OLA should retain three weekday Masses. After a period of consultation, we have decided to accept these proposals. As a result, the 5PM Sunday Mass at SMG will be suspended from July 5-September 6, and will resume on September 13. The new weekday Mass schedule listed above will go into effect on Monday, June 1. We will continue to review the Mass schedule at least once a year. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation. Here is the latest up-date on our 2015 Catholic Appeal performance: as of April 28, 144 OLA families had pledged $33,108 which is 60% of their goal of $55,512; and 76 SMG families had donated $17,045, which is 61% of their goal of $28,078. Please make a pledge as soon as possible to support the 50+ Central Ministries of our local Catho-lic Church by filling out a Catholic Appeal pledge card or going to our website (lynnfieldcatholic.org) and clicking on the Catholic Appeal link. Here is a blessing prayer for all our mothers on Moth-er’s Day: “Loving God, as a mother gives life and nour-ishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless these women, that they may be strength-ened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Grant this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.” Blessings to all of you in the week ahead!
Fr. Paul
