THE OSHAWA BOWLER
OSHAWA LAWN BOWLING CLUB NEWSLETTER JUNE 2018
“Respect the Past, Build for the Future”
THE MACKENZIE VICTORIA DAY CLUB TOURNAMENT
Monday May 21st, 2018
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
A warm hello to all members, and welcome to all new members. We had a very busy and successful OPEN HOUSE. Thank you to all members who gave theIr time to volunteer and assist new members to the sport of lawn bowling. Although open house has come and gone it is never too late to bring someone out to try, so if you know someone that may be interested simply make arrangements with a member of the committee and have them sign a waiver. Thank you to the members who came out to help with the barbeque during the open house on May -22 it was a great day. The MacMillan Tournament was cancelled due to weather, and Moyra is working on June 29th 2018 as the new date. As this is the 40th year for this tournament, we would like to see it played rather than cancel it from our calendar. Our Victoria Day Club Tournament sponsored by MacKenzie Pub & Restaurant was held on May-21st 2018. We had a good turnout with 4-greens of trebles, and 4-greens of pairs. Congratulations to Garry Armstrong, Dina DiCesare and Hailey Pagett winning the Trebles and congratulations to Suzie Palmer and Neil Clarke for winning the Pairs. Thank you to the ladies who did the kitchen, a great job, and thanks to Crystal Davis for doing the 50/50. After the tournament a lot of the members went to MacKenzie’s for dinner we had great food, good prices and a lot of social time together. The OLBA District Singles were held at our club on May-26/27th 2018. There were 5-men and 3-ladies competing to go on to the next level in Belleville. We would like to Congratulate Robert Steffen on winning and good luck in the next round we are rooting for you, and thanks to all the bowlers you gave us some of the best bowling to watch. Thank you to all the markers who gave their time, Suzie Palmer, Dennis Davidson, Howie Taylor, Allan Cleary, Roland MacKey, Jim & Linda Butler and Bob Matthews for the two days you were great. Thanks to the ladies in the Kitchen Nina Rossi and Jane Wood we had a very good two days together with lots if laughs. I hope I have not missed anyone and if so I apologize and shame on me. Well now it’s on to a new Month and a lot more bowling so have fun and great bowling. Dont forget to check out our website (www.oshalbc.weebly.com) and our new Facebook group for a lot of bowling information at our club.
THE GORDON MACMILLAN MEMORIAL TROPHY TOURNAMENT scheduled for Saturday May 19th was cancelled due to weather conditions and
conflicting tournament schedules.

Saturday May 26th & Sunday May 27th, 2018
THE SPORT OF LAWN BOWLS – A POTTED HISTORY
Older than the pyramids of Giza, bowls has taken on many forms and variations. Evidence of rounded stones projected towards various types of targets have been discovered in widespread civilizations such as the Aztecs, the indigenous tribes of North America, the Chinese, and the Polynesians. The game spread to Greece and Rome and thence through medieval Europe to Britain, where it has been played since the 13th century. Scotland, where a code of rules was formulated in 1848, is considered the home of the modern sport. The oldest known bowling green, in Southampton, England, dates at least to 1299, although other greens claim to be older. Henry VIII, himself a bowler, in 1511 banned the sport among the lower classes and levied a fee of 100 pounds on any private bowling green to ensure that only the wealthy could play. Lawn bowling was brought to Canada by British garrison officers; the first bowling green in Canada was constructed on the garrison grounds at Annapolis Royal, NS. By 1888, a tournament was staged in Toronto, involving 7 clubs. The first Canadian touring team travelled to Britain in 1904, and 2 years later a British team toured Canada. The 1913 Canadian team to Britain was the most successful of such groups; it won 17 matches, lost 13 and tied one.

ROBERT STEFFEN WINS THE DISTRICT 14 SINGLES
TOURNAMENT
Oshawa’s own Robert Steffen won the District 14 Singles Tournament.
Congratulations to Rob and on to the championship event to be held at Belleville LBC on June 15, 16 & 17,2018
Top four Women and Men advance to the National Championships in Regina, Sask. and the “Champion of Champions” tournament in Australia.
NEWSLETTER TITLE COMPETITION: In our May edition, we invited members to suggest an alternative name for this newsletter. We
had two entries and, although good titles, we felt that the current title of “Oshawa Bowler” was still the favoured choice. For their
efforts, we will be awarding Sue Palmer and Bob Mathews each a tube of “Grippo”.

NEW SIGNAGE
The club has some new signage:
• There is a new sign on the patio. This replaces the old wooden sign that was first erected for the opening of the club at its current location in 1992. The “old” sign may be renovated at some time in the future and relocated somewhere on the club site.
• The other new sign is located on the East Building facing the car park. This sign will assist any visitors to find us more easily. Both signs will have crests added shortly
Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club is now on
“Facebook” where you can find news about the
club and communicate with other members.
You just need to enrol and google “Oshawa
Lawn Bowling Club” to obtain access
Thanks to Karen Howard and Erni Vallee for

NEW CLUB CRESTS We are pleased to announce we have two new crests at the Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club!
Crest 1 is an updated version of the old crest. Respecting the history of the club, we call this one the “Heritage Crest”. This crest will remain the “Official” Club Crest for historical reasons and to our club’s relationship with the City of Oshawa. Once all of our old stationary is used up, this updated version of the crest will appear on the club stationary.
Crest 2 is a new design meant to depict a more modern approach for the club. Called the “Modern Crest”, this crest was specifically designed to be worn on the new style club tournament shirts. In line with our new crests, we have a new style club shirt for those who want to have a more modern look for tournaments (See below)
