Aquino inaugurates printer maker’s new plant in Batangas

President Benigno S. Aquino III thanked Japanese investors for their confidence in putting their business in the Philippines as he led Thursday the inauguration of Epson Precision Philippines Inc. (EPPI) new

production facility in Lipa City in Batangas


“It’s always been important to us that businesses operating in this country find success and expand thei factories here.. And in these uncer-tain times, I would say that it is doubly important,” the Presi-dent said in his mes-sage during the inau-guration of Epson’s new facility. “So allow me to say that I am very thankful for your confidence in our country and that it is a privilege for me to be here to inaugurate this new factory with you today,” he add-ed. The Chief Execu-tive noted the work ethics and skills of Filipino workers, saying that these are the biggest selling points in attracting in-vestments in

the country. He expects

tory to produce high quality products as proof of the positive ca-pabilities of the Filipino workers. As Epson’s P4.5-billion new factory em-ploys around 2,000 Filipinos, the President said this will substan-tially boost the coun-try’s economy and change the lives of the workers and their fami-lies. These new jobs will bring them decent living, food on their ta-bles and education for their children. The Philippine electronics industry di-rectly employs around half a million Filipinos and this number has

been steadily growing, the President said. He added that every direct hire has multiplier ef-fects in job generation. Last year, investments in the industry reached a record high of $2.3 billion, according to the President, noting that from January to Sep-tember of this year, it accounted for half of the entire country’s ex-ports. The President led the activation of the factory operation and had a tour of the new-ly-opened Epson facil-ity. Among those who joined the President at the event were Philip-pine Export Processing

new factory to significantly increase the production of 3LCD projector and inkjet printers as demand grows in its emerging markets worldwide. With the open-ing of the facility, the com-pany sees its total work-force growing from 6,000 workers to 8,000. Aside from its pro-duction facilities in Lipa City, Batangas, Epson also

has a production line in Cabuyao, Laguna. Epson is a glob-al imaging and inno-vation leader dedicat-ed to exceeding the vision of customers worldwide through its compact, energy saving, high-precision technologies. The company has a prod-uct lineup ranging from printers and 3LCD pro-jectors for enterprise and home use. It also produces sensors and micro devices. Led by the Ja-pan-based Seiko Ep-son Corp., the Epson Group comprises more than 78,000 employees in 99 companies around the world. (AS)

concerned government agencies and local government units (LGUs) are ready to implement

contingency measures in the wake of the La Niña phenomenon, a Palace official said on Friday.


The national and local officials are all ready to car-ry out disaster pre-paredness plans to reduce the impact of natural disasters on people’s lives and properties, accord-ing to Deputy Pres-idential Spokesper-son Abigail Valte during the regular press briefing in Malacanang on Friday.

Reports showed that local officials are ready to evac-uate people living in areas declared as “highly suscep-tible” to flooding and landslides by the Mines and Geo-sciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to protect people’s lives. The LGUs start-ed monitoring areas prone to flooding in their respective municipalities espe-cially during heavy rains. SSS to launch provident fund in 2012by Phres A. Evardone

Members of the Social Security System (SSS) may enjoy higher pension benefits upon their retirement with the launch of the SSS Provident Fund next year.


“We are still on the process of lay-ing out the system in place first before we can launch this program and our [members] can also prepare for this if they are interest-ed.” said Marissu G. Bugante, SSS Vice-President for Public Affairs and Special Events Division. The said fund is a form of investment program which will enable all members to put on additional savings on top of their regular contri-bution to SSS. This fund will give members earn-ings rates that are higher than what regular saving de-posit offers. The contribution can also

be made anytime and does not have a fixed deadline like the regular monthly contribution. Members can withdraw their earned savings in three ways: through lump sum, as regular monthly pension or combination of both once they reached the retirement age of 60. This fund is meant for those who will retire and those who are totally dis-abled, among oth-ers.S e l f - e m p l o y e d , OFWs, regular em-ployees and volun-tary members can enroll under this program. Under this pro-gram, OFWs and the self-employed will

be required to pay a monthly contribu-tion of P1,560 for at least six consecu-tive months before they can enroll in the provident fund. Regular employees will pay the said fee on top of their reg-ular SSS contribu-tions. Bugante was guest at the pro-gram “Talking Points” sponsored by the Philippine Communication and Operations Office (PCOO), Philippine Information Agency (PIA), and the Phil-ippine Broadcasting Service (PBS). The program was simul-taneously aired over People’s Television (PTV-4) and Radyo ng Bayan.

Northern Mindanao ( F O P A N O R M I N ) conducted a one-day seminar on current Good Manufacturing Practices in Cagayan de Oro aimed at ensuring that food processors products are safe and

in good quality products at par with international standards.

In partnership with theDepartment of Health-Food andDrugs Administration (DOH-FDA), Department of Science andTechnology (DOST),DepartmentofAgriculture (DA), and Departmentof Trade and Industry (DTI), theseminarwasattendedbymorethan200 food handling and processingrepresentatives from the differentpartsoftheregion. RepresentativesoftheTechnicalEducation and Skills Development

Authority (TESDA) in NorthernMindanao, headed by John D.Simborios, Chief of the RegionalOperations Division and Aida deGracia, Professor of Cagayan deOroBugoSchoolofArtsandTrades(COBSAT) also attended the cGMPseminar to ensure that TESDAwillbeupdatedonthemandatesofDOHAdministrativeOrderNo.153,seriesof2004ortheRevisedGuidelinesonCurrentGoodManufacturingPracticeinManufacturing,Packing,


Repacking,orHoldingFoodandknowhowthesegoodpractices’guidelinewillbe integrated inTESDAofferedqualifications. According to the DOH-AO,currentGoodManufacturingPractice(cGMP)isakeyfactorforindustriesto produce good quality, safe andaffordable products aligned tointernationalstandards. Among themodulesdiscussedare GMP organizations, premises,equipment,sanitationandhygiene,production and process control,quality control, documentation,quality audit, warehousing anddistribution,productrecall,retentionof samples, and subcontracting ofmanufacturerandrepacker. De Gracia,meanwhile, sharedthat she was able to attend GMPseminarsometimein2004,whichisnowupgradedandconductedagain

in Northern Mindanao after seven(7)years. She, who is handling FoodProcessing NC II, CommercialCooking NC II, Bread and PastryProductionNCII,HousekeepingNCII, and Household Services NC II,saidthatshealreadyincludedtopicsfrom the 2004 GMP seminar whensheconductstrainingonfoodrelatedqualification. There are common terms inthe seminar, but the application oftheDOH-AOispresentedtosuittocurrenttimes,shesaid. Carnapping in Normin drop by 51%by Apipa Bagumbaran

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Misamis Oriental - The incidence of carnapping in region 10 notably decreased by 51 percent in the third quarter of 2011, from the 182 cases recorded in the same quarter of 2010 to only 89 cases this year.

The decline in carnapping aswellasrobberyincidencewaslargelydue to the strategic deploymentof more officers in crime-proneareas, said Police SuperintendentLeony Roy Ga, officer-in-charge ofthe Regional Operations and PlansDivision (ROPD) of Police RegionalOffice-10(PRO-10). Inamediaforumheldrecentlyhere,Gadisclosed that total crimevolume in this year’s third quarterwas 3,932, down by 12 percentcompared to the 4460 recorded inthesameperiodlastyear.

DataprovidedbythePRO-10 also disclosedthat theft topped thelistofindexcrimeswith1,393 cases, followedby physical injury androbbery with 623 and457cases,respectively. Among the policeoffices in the region,Misamis Oriental andIligan City postedmarked decreases incrime volume by 28percentand23percent,respectively. In terms of averagemonthly crime rate

(AMCR), the cities of Cagayan deOro and Iligan registered notabledeclines by 14 percent and 12percent,respectively. IliganCityalsohadthehighestcrimesolutionefficiencyrate(CSER)with24percent,followedbyBukidnonwith19percent,MisamisOccidentalwith17percent,andMisamisOrientalwith16percent. The region wide CSER, onthe other hand, improved by 7.4percentagepoints,fromninepercentin2010to16percent,thisyear.

Further, the pioneeringactivity was facilitated by theofficersandmembersoftheAlagadng Kalikasan sa Hilagang Lanaoor AKHL, a group of volunteerenvironmentalists who advocateenvironmental protection,preservation and restoration ofthe endangered watersheds andcoastal areas in the province ofLanaodelNorte. in the region reported that it has documented this year some 41 cases of trafficking in persons mostly involving adult women who were victims of illegal recruitment. DSWD technical assistant di-vision chief RaquelNuñez said thatmostofthecaseswerereferralsfromvariousgovernmentandnon-govern-mentorganizationsinDavaoRegion,andonecasefromarescueoperationinDavaoCity. Another international sports competition will take center stage in the island of Mindanao on December 9-11, 2011 at the world-class Mindanao Civic Center in Tubod, Lanao del Norte.


The 2011 Ener-sel-Forte and Gov. Dimaporo World Mo-tocross Grand Fina-le: Philippines ver-sus World’s Best is a gathering of world-class motocross riders aimed at promoting the province of Lanao del Norte. In a press state-ment, Lanao del Norte

Provincial Information Officer Lyndon Calica said the event is in line with the thrust of the provincial govern-ment to promote the province as the Mo-tocross Capital of the Philippines. Calica also said the international com-petition is also promot-ing Lanao del Norte

as a peaceful and pro-gressive province in Northern Mindanao. He added that the event will fea-ture professional rid-ers from the American Motocross Association (AMA) and will be high-lighted by a Freestyle Motocross by top FMX riders from the United States.

BUTUAN CITY – The prime Crime Incident Reporting Sys-tem in Mindanao was officially launched recently here in the presence of Philippine National Police (PNP) Director-General Nicanor Bartolome.

To augment peace and order measures and prevent proliferation of crime incidents in the city, the electronic blotter (e-blotter) system of PNP was created to allow fast

and accurate reporting of crime incidents and pre-vent tampering of police records. Also, through this new system, the local po-lice could easily track and
