September 2014
Friends:
We’re into the dog days of summer again, when attendance starts to drop and offerings decline. It’s true most every year and it’s true this year, too. We were holding our own fairly well through June but it seems that we started to fall behind in July. Folks are away, taking ad-vantage of the summer’s last opportunities for rest and relaxation. We understand that.
As we write this letter we remain amazed at how God’s Spirit continues to work in Millburn Church this summer:
Our youth completed a successful and transformative mission trip to the Twin Cities and brought God’s love to those in need
The church was filled with fun, energy and praise during Vacation Bible School
The care, support and prayer we offer our fellow Millburn Church members continues to make a difference every day
But we also felt a need to touch base with you about our having fallen behind financially. This is a healthy and vibrant church, but even healthy and vibrant organizations encounter rough spots from time to time. So, please consider this note a friendly reminder that the church’s obligations continue even when most of our regular program-ming takes its summer slumber. We invite the community - all of us - to remember our generosity to this community of faith. If we all do that we’ll smooth out this rough spot quickly.
Peace and Love,
Pastor Jed Watson Todd Schmeling, Moderator
P.S. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Rally Home Sun-day on Sept. 7th. If you could help by making a contribution before that date we’ll be grateful.

We’re Moving…..
Fall Fundraisers Need Your Donations
It’s time to start scouring your household for donations. Whether large or small, valuable or inexpensive, there’s a place for your items in one of our two fundraisers. The fall Thrift and Bake Sale on October 17 and 18 needs your donations of household and décor items typically found in a rummage sale or resale shop. Then, the annual Auction on November 8 will gladly accept donations of value to be sold by auction.
If you’re not sure of the value of an item, rest assured we can help assess the most appro-priate sale. And, if a valuable Thrift Sale donation does not sell in October, we typically hold it for sale at the Auction. So, clean your closets and start to gather you outgrown clothes, unused housewares, decorations, linens, toys and small electronics for the Thrift Sale. Also consider donating antiques, heirlooms, collectibles and valuables to the Auction. Both fundraisers help support the church operating budget, and donation receipts are available.
For the Thrift Sale, contact Donna Zradicka at 847-265-2708 or [email protected]. For the Auction, contact Gary Doolittle at 847-395-3828.

argo’s Message
Join us on September 7th for Rally Home Sunday as we begin a new Church school year! We will have one service at 10:00 in the Sanctuary. Children will stay with their parents for the beginning of the service but will be excused to classes after the introduction and commissioning of this year’s teachers. Plan to stay for lunch after the service, which will be provided by the Christian Education Committee.
Our children in preschool through 7th grade, will be using the curriculum we used last year called, Grow, Proclaim, Serve! Grow Your Faith by Leaps and Bounds. This curriculum will nourish and enrich the faith of our children. Kids will learn how they can proclaim the good news of God’s love and serve God and neighbor. Our youth, 8th grade through Senior High, will continue with LinC, Living in Christ. The purpose of this program is help youth develop Christian identity and live the Christian faith in their contemporary culture.
We are again asking parents to register their children for Sunday school. Please use the registra-tion form found in this Messenger or you may fill one out on Rally Home Sunday.
Youth schedule for the fall along with the Parents’ Night Out schedule will be available soon. Look in your Bulletins for our start date in September!
Thank you’s
A huge thank you goes to the Christian Education Committee for all their help with setting up clas-ses for the new Church school year and set-up and planning Rally Home Sunday!

Our Altar Flower Chart is posted on the Bulletin Board in Lauren Hall. For those of you unaware of the procedure for purchasing flowers for a specific date here is the way it works. Very simple - you choose the Sunday and Laura, the Church Office Coordi-nator, does the rest. Our flowers are ordered and delivered from Floral Acres out of Antioch. The
charge is $27. During the week you’ve signed up for, Laura will contact you. You need only indicate to her whether you want fresh flow-ers in a vase or the triangular dish arrangement. If you have color choices she can specify that, as well. Really a nice way to participate in deco-rating the altar but still able to
take home and enjoy yourself after the 10:00 a.m. Worship Service.
Please consider signing up to provide refresh-ments for coffee hours. It is a vital part of Millburn UCC. It is a meaningful, intergenera-tional gathering – held regularly after our 10:00 Sunday Worship Service.
The sign-up sheet is located on the bulletin
board in Lauren Hall. Groups, committees
and individuals are encouraged to volunteer.

A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good Samaritan. She asked the class, "If you saw a person lying on the roadside, all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?" A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, "I think I'd throw up."

September Birthdays Attraction, Not Promotion
by Emily C. Heath "Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God." - Exodus 34:29 People in the recovery community often talk about the con-cept of "attraction rather than promotion." 12 Step groups like AA have a tradition of not taking out advertisements or trying to recruit. Instead, they hope that people who can benefit from the group will see the ways the 12 Steps have worked in the lives of people they know and decide that they want to have the same sort of serenity. When Moses comes down from Mount Sinai after receiving the Ten Commandments he was a changed man. He had come close and talked to God. And the experience was so profound that he couldn't hide it. The light was literally shining through him, and the people gathered at the base of the mountain could see it. I think the church could learn a lot from people in recovery when it comes to evangelism. There's nothing wrong with a church putting an ad in the paper or putting out a new sign. But if you really want people to come to church, you and the other members of your church will play the biggest role in attracting others. If someone looks at you, can they see that you have been changed by God's love? Does the light shine through you? Do you have a peace they want? Do you live a life filled with grace? If so, good news! You are already a great evangelist. Prayer Loving God, transform us. Show yourself to us and make us people of light. And when others see us, may they know that we have been changed by seeing you. Amen.
