Ole Kirk Christiansen was born on February 7, 1891 in a village called Filskov. He was the tenth and youngest child of Jens Niels Christiansen. In 1911, he left his birth country of Denmark and went to Germany and Norway to be a carpenter. He returned to Denmark 5 years later and bought the Billund Maskinsnedkeri og Tømreforretning.

In 1932, after losing his job, Mr. Christiansen began making wooden toys and established LEGO. The first toy released from LEGO was a wooden duck which he loved so much. He made versions of houses and buildings like he worked on when he was a carpenter. But in 1947, LEGO made an enourmous leap from wood to plastic as it still is today.

Christiansen had made over 200 plastic and wooden toys by 1949. In 1920, his son Godtfred was born. He came up with the name Lego from the Danish

leg godt ("play well") and the company grew to become the Lego Group.

In 1958, at the age of 66, Ole Kirk Christiansen, the man who discovered LEGO more than 20 years ago, died of a heart attack. His son Godtfred took over the company after he died. Ole was buried in Grene Churchyard in Billund, Denmark. Godtfred died in 1995 and HIS son took over. But now, there are hundreds of LEGO Stores and sets.
