My luck o course ran out aer that, but Ill get back to that later. Te shoppieven i I didnt end up buying a lot due to high prices. Te Importance o Art and Music: How Do theArts Contribute to Education?

    By Libby Sweet

Education is no substitute or pure raw talent. However it is a good oundation on which talent may build.(David Allio)

Did you know that students who participate in art education are three times more likely to be recognized or aca-demic achievement, elected to class oce in their school, participate in a math and science air, win an award or schoolattendance, and win an award or writing an essay or poem. Did you also know that it has been proven that art educatedstudents get higher SA scores than their peers by an average o 91 points? Tese are just some o the many reasons thatart education is important.

Numerous schools across the nation are aced with serious budget decits and have no choice but to cut programs. Some schools in America have chosen to cut sports programs or move to booster club sponsored activities. Many schoolsare stopping or cutting back on Art education. One out o our schools cut their Art education programs. Tis statisticcould continue to get worse i the economy doesnt improve. No one knows how bad this could get. Here are some reasonsthat schools should continue to und Art education and why students should continue art education. Te ollowing actswere taken rom several studies completed across the nation and here are the ndings:

    1. Music and art helps students academically. Seven out o ten principals believe that music education is very im-portant to a students academic success. As said above, Art educated students get higher SA scores then their peers by anaverage o 91 points. Tat could make the diference o getting in a top college or not. It gives students a challenge. Learn-ing notes and the ways to play them is an extremely challenging thing. Tis prepares students to work harder in othersubjects.

    2. Music and art ability uses the right side o the brain. Tis side o the brain also includes many o our bodys ac-tions, thoughts, imagination, and creativity. Tis helps you use your brain more and inuences you to ocus and work ontasks.

    3. Music and art builds sel esteem. Perorming at concerts shows you can set goals and accomplish anything youset out to do. Sel esteem will make you more condent in yoursel. Tis can help you academically as well as getting intoa college or being hired or a job.

    4. Music and art are an escape rom the real world. Tey can help calm an individual and can be meditative. I youwere struggling in math or i you are going through a rough patch in your lie, music can act as therapy or you. Music alsohelps ocus someone.

Some people believe that art and music are distracting to students but recent studies show just the opposite. Somestudents with attention issues can help remove external distracters by listening to music quietly while reading or studyingtext. In some cases it helps students be more ocused and it doesnt harm them at all. Facts rom the studies listed above

Tis year is the 100th Anniversary o Girl Scoutswhich started in Georgia in 1912. A little girl named Ju-liette Gordon Low rst started Girl Scouts. One reasonGirl Scouts was started was that the Boy Scouts got tiredo have girls in their meetings. Tat sounds pretty meanright! (alk about ladys rst!?) Similar to Boy Scouts, girls learn skills in order to earn merit badges to moveup the ranks. Te ranks are Daisies, Brownies, Juniors,Cadette, Senior and Ambassador. Daisies are the entrylevel rank and where you begin the process o becoming

an Ambassador. An Ambassador is the equivalent rankto that o an Eagle Scout. At 5 years old you become aDaisy and the vest you wear is blue. You move to therank o a Brownie at the next stage. Tis stage beginswhen you start 2nd grade and you wear a brown vest.In 4th grade you move on to the rank o a Junior andyou receive a green vest. Aer that youre a Cadette in5th grade and wear a tan vest or the rest o the ranks.Senior rank starts in at 9th grade and nally the Ambas-sador in 11th grade. Unlike other ranks you only haveone year to complete this last rank. My troop is a Cadetteranked troop and we will achieve the rank o S enior nextyear. My troop number is 4673 and it is a small troop oonly our girls. I you are interested we are in need omore people to join our troop.

One o the goals o Girl Scouting is to completeawards and merit badges. I am currently working on theSilver Award. Only 5% o Girl Scouts complete SilverAward project, its the highest level award a cadette canearn. It teaches responsibilit y and leadership. You alsohave to work really hard on this project and i you dontit just a waste o time. Some people are doing their SilverAward or a scholarship. In the past years Octorara School District has had tomake some dicult discussions concerning the middle schoolsports program. As a result o budgetary cutbacks the juniorhigh has lost a number o sports teams and has lost its diver-sity in the athletics department. Tis year has been diferent.Te number o athletic sports available to students has grownby adding back an activity. Tat activity was Cross Country. Teteam consisted o sixteen runners, all o which gave a 100% andpushed themselves hard. As a new sport, there were many un-certainties and newcomers to the sport. With the combined e-ort o the team and Coach Rudisill they were able to completea antastic season on October the 26th at the Chesmont LeagueChampionship meet.

Cross Country is diferent rom most types o sports.Distance running is used or conditioning in a number o sportsbut it is not the main event. Cross Country is the sport o run-ning but diferent rom rack and Field. It is more than just run-ning on the track or on the road. Cross Country is running overall terrains imaginable. Courses include many hills, rocks, trails, elds, and even creeks. Runners challenge themselves in manyways. During middle school years the course is two miles long.In high school, the course is 3.1 miles long and in college thecourse is ve miles long. Cross Country allows people to stayconditioned so they are ready to play harder in their primarysports season. Some o these sports include baseball, basketball, and wrestling.

In order to be a good distance runner you must have a

number o strengths. Distance runners need to be dedicated, work hard and develop great endurance. Participants must usemany diferent types o muscles in their upper and lower bodiesas well as great core strength. In order to be successul, you needto have courage and in most cases endure more pain than yourcompetitors.

Cross Country is unique because it is both an individualsport and a team sport. Individuals can have un beating theirpersonal records, their opponents, or they can even enjoy beat-

ing a team mate on occasion. Te race is run aat the end o the race the top ve runners rotheir places in the race totaled to create a teamthe lowest score wins. Te Endangered Species Corner-Snow LeopardBy Holly Fisher

Tis year, I will be doing a column on endangered species. As a result o over hunting, global warmingand the worlds population hitting 7 billion this past year many species are acing extinction within the next 20years. Some scientists predict nearly 1/3 o all species could ace extinction beore the end o the century. Tedenition o an endangered species is an animal thats population is so small that the species is at risk o going ex-tinct. Te International Union or the Conservation o Nature (IUCN) has calculated the number o endangeredspecies is 40% o all organisms. I will be showcasing our endangered species this year that I believe we shouldall try to help. Te rst Endangered Species showcase will ocus on the Snow Leopard.

    Snow Leopards

Have you ever gone to the zoo and seen the beautiul Snow Leopards? Tis animal resembles its cousin, the tan leopard. Teir spots look alike, along with most everything else about them. Te snow leopard is mostrecognizable by its long tail and almost white coat. Tis helps them blend in with their surroundings but alsocontributes to the reason they are nearing extinct. Tis animal preers to be high up in the cold, snowy mountainso Central Asia. Tese beautiul cats have extremely powerul legs, and can leap up to 50 eet. Tey use their longtails or balance and warmth in the cold mountains.

Like most cats the snow leopards as you can imagine eats a lot. Tey are carnivorous, which means theyeat mostly meat, but they also eat some plants. Tey are known to be able to kill animals three to our times theirsize! It is not unheard o or a Snow Leopard to attack and eat a mountain goat! Tese animals are beautiul andtheir coats are highly valued on the black market. As a result poachers are killing them in alarming numbers. Tesad act about this animal is that it is an endangered species.

Te exact number o snow leopards le in the wild is unknown, but the estimated population is 4,500 to5,000. Tere are two main causes or the decrease in population. One is that this beautiul animal is hunted orits ur and bones. Another reason or the decline is destruction o their habitat. Many countries including theUnited States are beginning to house and breed these beautiul leopards in zoos around the nation. Te closestplace to see a Snow Leopard is the Cape May Zoo! Reading Is an AdventureBy Alisha Arora

Reading is an adventure. You have probably heard that quote or seen that written on a poster in your C.A teach-ers room. It is not just a random slogan every reading teacher says; it is the truth.

Tere are many reasons why you should read. o start with, the slogan itsel has a meaning: reading can reallytake you on an adventure. Books sometimes teleport you into the plot and make you eel the thoughts and eelings o thecharacters. Some books are so well written that the book gets your adrenaline going, gets you on the edge o your seat, and gets you so involved into that story that you wont even hear the dismissal bell.

Books also expand our knowledge and conception o the world around us. You may argue that movies, showsand documentaries do just that too, but I believe that books are a much better alternative. Tey allow each reader toexperience the same story using ones own imagination. When a hundred people watch a movie or a show, they see thesame thing whatever the director or the operator wishes to show. Tose movies or shows dont give you the opportunityto take and use the message given and incorporate that in your own perception.

Books are very diferent. Te experience achieved through reading is richer and more personal, since the samedescription and the same word choice will result in as many diferent interpretations as there are readers. We are allunique, and books allow us to experience whatever is narrated, in the light o our own personal values, through our ownideas and our imagination.

Another reason why you should read is that when you write you can input diferent styles o diferent authors tomake your writing unique and interesting to read. Writing plain and boring makes your reader eel that you are plainand boring. But i you write creatively with neat ways to say the same thing, your reader will really be impressed and eelwhat you are trying to convey.
