Clunes CFA Brigade Celebrates 150 Years Serviceby Lindsay Pritchard
2014 is a significant milestone for Clunes and the Clunes Fire Brigade in particular. It recognises the 150th anniversar y of the formation of the Brigade even though there had been a form of fire protection in the town prior to 1864.
The Brigade will be marking the occasion on Sunday 5 October with a street parade in Fraser Street and displays at the Fire Station and area behind the Bottle Museum. Robert Campbell’s book Buckets to Pagers will be available for purchase on the day.
The parade will start at Fraser and Purcell Streets, travel via Service Street and finishing at the Town Hall. Static displays with fire trucks, fire brigade memorabilia and community f i re safe ty information will be held at the Fire Station and behind the Bottle Museum from 11.30 until 3pm. There will also be activities for children including an appearance by Captain Koala.
Museum OpeningSaturday 4 Octoberby Judith Fawcett
A date to remember ! It ’s happening! The Clunes Museum Committee has set October 4th at 10.30am as the opening date and time. We are aware that it has taken time - but setting up a collection is a very exacting undertaking.
It is the same weekend the Fire Brigade is celebrating its 150 years and we will be exhibiting some of
our col lection of Clunes Fire Brigade memorabilia to mark this fantastic achievement.
As well as working on the return of the collection we have until September to submit our Accred i ta t ion documents to Museums Australia (Vic). We have been Accredited and re-Accredited twice since 1994, but because of the changed conditions in the new building we have to start again from scratch. We are excited to be so close to opening our doors – it is very different to our old display area and we look forward to sharing this new experience with you.
AN ACKNOWLEDGEMENTTO THE EDITOR OF THE CLUNES GUARDIAN AND GAZETTESir,-I desire, through the medium of your paper, to call public attention to an act of
courtesy displayed by Mr Pearce on the 6th instant. Having taken a ticket at the Clunes station for Melbourne, I happened to meet an old friend, and unfortunately delayed talking to him rather too long. The conse-quence was by I just missed the train. My wife and a travelling companion having gone on, I was in a complete fix. However, it was proposed that I take a cab and endeav-our to catch the train at the Tourello station. Mr Pearce at once kindly placed his convey-ance at my disposal, and we started off, and so quickly did that gentlemans stud get over the road, that we reached the station before the train started, I of course got in and pre-ceeded on my journey to Melbourne. Such an act as this on the part of Mr Pearce ought not to go by unnoticed, and I have no doubt you will give it publicity in your widely circulated journal. By doing so you will greatly oblige, in haste, Yours &c.,JAMES JEFFREY Pine Lodge West, near Shepparton, October 9th.

Friday 31 Oct & Saturday 1 Novemberby Tess Brady
Plans are well underway for our first Clunes Booktown for Kids, with the Schools Day on Friday 31 October (9.30am – 3pm) and the Family Day on Saturday 1 November (10.30am – 4.30pm). The full deta i l s a re on the webs i te a t www.clunesbooktown.com.au.
We have 13 top children’s authors and illustrators, the children’s village of lost trades, an Anzac Exhibition and much more….
Why Do we Need it?A recent report showed that kids from rural
Victoria are almost seven months behind their city cousins in reading. “The mean NAPLAN score for reading in year 3 was 20 points higher at state schools in city areas, which reflects almost seven months of learning.” The Age 30/8/14
Let’s help the kids develop a love of reading!
The Festival PrecinctThe festival will be mainly contained within the
Warehouse-Collins Place-Town Hall precinct, with an extension to the RSL building on Fraser St. There will be talks and exhibitions in these buildings.
Bailey Street, outside of the Town Hall and Court House, will be closed from 9 am to 5pm on both days.
Fraser St will NOT be closed, but please take care driving down it as there will be a lot of children about.
Schools Day Friday 31 Oct, 9.30am – 3pmSchools will be bussed in. The area of the festival
will be closed to unauthorised personnel in much the same way as a school yard is (i.e., for the children’s safety). Schools will be encouraged to bring their own lunches or make use of a tuckshop set up in the Town Hall kitchen, and run by a community group. Children attending Clunes Primary School have all been given a free ticket.
Community Access and Late Night Trading on Friday 31 Oct, 3pm – 7pm
On Friday 31 October, from 3-7pm, the people of Clunes will have free access to the precinct.
One of the highlights of the festival will be the Children’s Village of Lost Trades and we will have 20 ‘lost trades’ people demonstrating their crafts and selling their wares. Another highlight is the ANZAC exhibition of contemporary il lustrations from children’s books dealing with the Great War. This will be in the RSL Building.
To c reate a fun evening we have asked traders to hold ‘ late n ight ’ t r ad ing by remain ing open to 6.30-7.00pm. The sun does not se t unt i l around 7.30pm on this date.
We invite all Clunes locals to come at this time, for free access to these par t s o f the festival and to enjoy the late night trading.
Family Day Saturday 1 Nov, 10.30am – 4.30pm Access to the festival precinct on the Family Day
will be by tickets only. Tickets are available online at www.clunesbooktown.com.au where you will also find the full program. Adults are at children’s prices. Single tickets purchased online cost $20 and a family pass for 4 costs $70 (prices are slightly more if purchased on the day). Toddlers are free.
Pop-up StallsThroughout the festival Shire compliance officers
will be in attendance. This means that temporary footpath food stalls, unable to display compliance, will be shut down.
For more information contact Sheila Hollingworth at the Festival Office, 22 Fraser St or ph 5345 3947.
Volunteers NeededOnce again we are calling for volunteers. You do
not need to have a ‘working with children’ certificate as all volunteers are supervised by those who do.
We need help in the venues, at the gate, at the information desk and in selling books. We also need help in the Green Room and in setting up and pulling down the marquees.
A full list of jobs will be with Jane at Mt Beckworth Wines, Fraser St, during the weekend or call into the Festival Office, at 22 Fraser St Monday - Thursday. There are 2 hour shifts on Friday and Saturday with set up shifts on Thursday. All volunteers are given a ticket to the Family Day and access to the Green Room. As always, many hands make fun and light work!
Billets NeededSome of the artisans associated with the Lost
Trades are looking for accommodation on Thursday and Friday nights. If you would like to volunteer your spare room please call the office.

Recital St Paul’s AnglicanSunday 26 October 2.30pmby Michael Cheshire
Join us on Sunday 26 October for a mainly baroque, but not all, recital. Composers: J.S. Bach, Telemann, Couper in , Piazza . Inst r uments : Pipe organ , Harpsichord, Recorder, Cello, Clarinet ensemble, Voice. Artists: Gregory Ellsmore (organ, harpsichord); Dylan Quinlan-Baskett (organ, harpsichord, recorder); Caroline Ellsmore (voice); Nigel Smith (cello); Ballarat Grammar School Clarinet Ensemble. Plus possibly more from Ballarat Grammar.
Interesting facts: Pipe organ: The organ was built by Hamlin & Son in around 1866. It was carted from Daylesford to Clunes in 1888. It is one of only two in the world, we think. Harpsichord: Was bought as a kit build instrument in 1977 by Rosalie Bonighton, who was an Australian composer and local Ballarat music teacher and organist of St. John's Solders Hill. However it was never completed until this year by Dylan Quinlan-Baskett.
At St. Paul's Anglican Church Clunes. Cost: $10 adult; students free. Contact: Dylan Quinlan-Baskett - [email protected]

Thank Youby Rhonda Fawcett
Words in Winter has finished for this year and many people contributed to its success: committee members, individual volunteers, businesses and sponsors. Thank you all for your help and participation and for buying raffle tickets to help us raise necessary funds.
A lot of careful thought and hard work went into all of the events and they were enjoyed by many.
We look forward to next year's festival and if anyone would like to be involved at a committee level please contact me, Rhonda Fawcett, (co-ordinator Clunes Words in Winter) on 0428 766 227 or 5476 6227.
Clunes Policeby Athol (Chaffs) Chaffey
G’Day everyone, Here’s the crime round up for the last month.
There have been a few reported crimes in the last month: burglary in Ligar Street, tools and household goods stolen; theft from a house in Smeaton Road, cash taken; theft from a vacant house in Canterbury Street, hot water service stolen; theft of 120 sheep from a farming property in Glengower.
Any information greatly appreciated.A couple of bad car prangs in the area over the last
month: a fatal collision at Allendale; a serious injury collision at Creswick and another injury collision at Tourello.
Not sure if you all saw the recent media release on the telly... as I write this article (13 September), the road toll is 178 (compared to 163, for the same time last year). There is a huge effort to stop the road toll from increasing on last years total, so there is a statewide traffic blitz from now to the end of the year, breath tests, DRUG tests (new to this area) and more speed cameras and highway patrol cars in the area, please be careful.
As I said in my last newsletter article, there was only one game left in the regular season of the CHFNL, being the Junior Netball Co-ordinator, the Under 13’s made the finals and were unlucky to get knocked out in the first elimination final. The Under 15’s also made the finals and managed to beat the more
fancied Hepburn in the first elimination final but were unlucky to go down to Newlyn in the first semi final.
Last month was the Clunes Football Netball Club Junior presentation night, and as always I presented the Clunes Police Leadership trophies to a player from each age group f rom both netbal l and footy, congratulations to the winners and also to the Best and Fairest winners; each award very well deserved.Clunes Police Leadership Award Winners:
Netball - Under 13 Meyha Batstra; Under 15 Alice Newitt; Under 17 Tarryn Chaffey. Football - Under 12 Lachie Thomas; Under 15 Joel Nevill; Under 18 Jake Hill.
Until next newsletter, stay safe... As I always say, I am YOUR local copper and can be contacted on station number 5345 3211, mobile number 0427 683 940, f ax number 5 345 3794 or emai l a t [email protected].
If you need police attendance for an emergency situation ALWAYS ring 000.)
Thank You from Clunes Citizen of the Yearby Jean Higgins
I would like to say a big thank you to the CTDA who for 17 years have been hosting the Clunes Community Dinners which gives an opportunity for volunteers of Clunes to be together and to be acknowledged.
Sitting at a table with my family enjoying the evening, listening to Guest Speaker Hazel Edwards and then to be totally shocked when Malcolm Hull read my name out as ‘Female Citizen of the Year’.
Like many other people in Clunes, volunteerism is a big part of our family and it is something that you just do, without question and be part of the wonderful community.
I also take the opportunity of thanking the people who took the time to think of others and do nominations for this recognition.

Preparing for Fire Seasonby Lindsay Pritchard
Some may think that October is too early to prepare for the Fire Season. but before you know it the warmer weather will be with us.
Now is the time to start planning. You should be considering what preparations that you will make leading up to the fire season.
Getting your mowers and if you have them fire pumps serviced. Things such as cutting grass, burning off, cleaning gutters, and clearing up clutter around your property and general tidying up are activities that you should be commencing.
It is also the time to develop written fire plans. Consider what you will do – stay and defend or leave. Trigger points for actions, what you will need to do.
The Brigade will be in the main street on Saturday mornings with information on Fire Plans during October.

Beat’s Bit...Hello Good Citizens of Clunes and District,The Neighbourhood House is on a winner with the
Community Dinners that commenced four weeks ago. Last Tuesday 46 people attended after starting with 18 on our first event on 19 August.
The dinners are the brainchild of Tessa Ambrose, who approached the Neighbourhood House in July with the idea. Tessa is also the Head Chef for these events with support from various other volunteers. A mighty effort!
It also demonstrates how my ongoing pleas for ideas from YOU as members of the Community can be made a reality.
Please get in touch with us if you have any ideas for programs, projects of activities you may want support for.
With the Spring weather well and truly upon us, outdoor activities such as the Community Garden and preparations for the Grasslands Production are underway. Anyone wanting to become involved is most welcome. Again, contact us for introductions.
The ‘corporate’ side of Clunes Neighbourhood House is also looking at further strengthening its governance and management framework and is keen to attract more members, especially of our Management Committee. If you have experience in financial/accounts management, marketing, community development, law or secretarial matters, or have a general passion for promoting social inclusion in your local community please contact us to discuss further.
Another more recent development is the beginning of a partnership arrangement with our Neighbourhood House colleagues in Creswick and Haddon.
A major dr iver behind establ ishing these relationships is to be able to provide Clunes residents with access to various training opportunities that we are unable to run ourselves due to our low demand locally. So, if we can’t run it locally, we can at least provide you with access nearby. We will be outlining courses on offer in future Newsletters.
Lastly, our participation numbers. In previous Newsletters I have outlined our goal to achieve and then maintain participation levels of 250 per month. July saw 302 and August dipped slightly to 278…with the improving weather and the great success of events such as the Community Dinners , it is probably time to upwardly revise our modest target.
Ever onwards and upwards - Beat Wittwer, Co-ordinator.
BookingsMany of our programs are dependent on us
receiving sufficient interest to be able to commence. We therefore ask that you contact us with your Expression of Interest and when we have sufficient numbers we will get back to you to let you know a commencement time and date.
So, if you are interested in ANY activity listed, p lea se l e t us know. Contact by e -mai l : co [email protected], by phone: 5345 4078, or face to face at 70 Bailey St. Clunes.
Wanted: Management Committee Members
Clunes Neighbourhood House is in its second year of improving its governance framework and aligning its Strategic Plan. It’s a very exciting time for Clunes Neighbourhood House and we now require additional committee members (volunteers) to maintain its growth.
Particularly, we are seeking someone who can take on the Treasurer role which wil l be vacant in the imminent future. Experience for this Office Holder position would be welcomed however if you are looking for some experience in this position we are happy to offer training.
The Clunes Neighbourhood House Committee of Management is a wonderful and diverse team which is looking for people who value community cohesion and are interested finding out more about their own Neighbourhood House.

Retailers Extraordinaire 3: Neil Newitt - Photographer
by Judy Burn
Photography is a wonderful hobby for many people, and a lucky few are able to make a living from it. Neil Newitt has not only achieved that, but he has created a three-fold centre for business, networking and entertainment, at his Photography shop on the Fraser St/ Ballarat Rd corner.
Neil is the Clunes representative on Hepburn Council, as most people would know, and he is available most weekends for people to discuss any matters of interest to them. He is in his 3rd year in this role and his aim is to deliver the best outcomes possible for the residents of Clunes and surrounds. That is the first thing: did you ever know of a Councillor to be so visible and readily available?
Then there is the ‘Friday Night Drinks at the Gallery’ venture, which Neil started with his wife, Linda, earlier this year. Drinks are available at very reasonable prices, with complimentary nibbles, every Friday night. Neil and Linda revived the idea of the ‘Wine Bar’ from “Robbie G’s”, which was a great meeting place a few years ago, and where they, along with a number of other new and old residents of Clunes, were able to have a drink, meet people and mingle. Neil and Linda offer an easy-going, relaxed and friendly environment for socialising.
Then there is the Photography Gallery. Neil does not just operate a shop which sells photographs. He is a professional photographer with many years’ experience, as well as a real feel for country life and rural landscapes, and he provides many services in relation to photography.
Neil worked as a press photographer for the Age for 20 years, rising to the rank of Senior Photographer and Picture Editor during his time there. He left the Age in 2005, seeing that major changes in technology were effecting print media, and feeling unsure about the future there.
Neil became a freelance photographer – which he still is – while simultaneously stumbling on Clunes as a beautiful place to be and buying land here. That was in 2003. A house was built, and Neil and Linda, with their two children Alice and Harry, joined the ranks of Clunes ‘weekenders’.
In early 2007, they made the decision to move here permanently, and have never looked back. Linda commuted to work in Melbourne for 15 months before securing a position with Parks Victoria and later Hepburn Shire, then joining Wesley College in 2011, while Neil built his reputation as a freelance photographer. The Internet and new technology in general meant that he could do much of his work from
home. He obtained a c o n t r a c t with R.M. Wi l l i a m s O u t b a c k Ma gazine , with whom he has now b e e n working for 10 years. He t ra ve l s to assignments a l l o ver V i c t o r i a and into N . S . W . , m e e t i n g peop le in other small communities like ours, which broadens his outlook and gives him some good ideas in his role as councillor.
Neil moved to set up a photography gallery after his experience at the first Booktown festival in 2007. He rented a space in the Free Library building, and the success of this encouraged him to look for a more permanent setting. (That’s another thing that the Booktown movement can take credit for!) After trying a few other locations, he rented the shop at 55 Fraser St (previously Timeless Harmony and now the Book Fossicker) then four years later, he and Linda took the opportunity to purchase the old Post Office/Pharmacy building at 54 Fraser St, which is one of the best locations in the retail area.
Neil and Linda have extensively renovated the gallery side of the premises, including opening up the fireplaces. The building dates from 1859 and is one of the oldest in Fraser St. It has housed many businesses over the years, including a bootmakers; the son of whom – George Rose - became a famous practitioner of stereo-photography. George sold his technique all over the world and is one of the pioneers who put Clunes on the map. Neil feels ‘good vibes’ from having restored the shop to photography in the 21st century. He has now been there for 18 months, and in his own words “has been embraced by locals and visitors”.
Nei l ’s photographic ga l ler y offers mainly photographs of Clunes and surrounds, some of them historical, but there are also other photographs, spanning Neil’s 30 year career in the industry. He also does restoration work of family photos, an area which is growing, and runs photography courses throughout

the year, along with specialist sessions for individuals, by arrangement.
Neil is very community-minded and much of his work is focused on helping to improve the fabric of our community. For example, he is keen to see a Sunday evening train out of Clunes put into place, so people can return to Melbourne after a full weekend here.
Neil is happy to see new faces every week in his shop (as well as old ones!) and to hear many positive comments. He plans to extend the opening hours of his gallery as the town grows – and it is growing, thanks to the efforts of a number of creative and forward thinking people like Neil.

Fishing Talesby Helen Hardy
Eleven members went to the Broken Creek fishing competition with many of them catching fish. President Ray catching the largest with a Murray cod weighing 5.120 kilos, Graham and John catching 1.3 and .795 yellow bellies. Several members have been fishing the bay catching flathead, squid and gummy sharks. Rumours are the DEPI are wanting to raise fishing license fees to $100-$150 year.
Those fishing at Bullen Merri or Purrumbete are asked to keep any Quinet Salmon they catch. No catch and release. Reason being fisheries are releasing fish all the time.
Next Comp: Bay Trip 25th -26th October 2014. Next Meeting: Monday 6th October 2014.
Quote: Men and fish are alike. They both get in to trouble when they open their mouths.
