The Clunes & District Agricultural Society will celebrate its 152nd show on Saturday, November 17th 2012

The Clunes Show has had a long standing tradition in Clunes and the surrounding District. The Society has a hard working, enthusiastic and progressive committee to ensure the Clunes Show will be around for a long time to come, hopefully another 152 shows. It is one of the longest running Agricultural Shows in Victoria.

Established in 1859 the Clunes Agricultural Society has had some difficult times in the past but today it produces one of the best one day country shows in Victoria. The show has grown and includes traditional favourites along with exciting events for children and a range of activities for adults.

The feature attraction this year is the FORD V8 SIMULATOR. Experience what it's like to drive a V8 Supercar around some of the best circuits in Australia - All ages will enjoy. If your interest is Utes, we have what was described in a ute magazine in 2009 as the “Pinnacle of Victorian Ute Shows”.

Being an Agricultural Show, this year will include the traditional animal events of a full horse program on the arena all day and cattle. PREPARING FOR THE FIRE SEASON

Can I or Cant I A message from the Clunes F ire Br igade

The fire danger period has yet to be declared, however everyone should be aware of what they can or can’t do with regard to fires & naked flame during this period.

The CFA have produced a brochure that details what you can and can’t do during declared Fire Danger Periods, and on days of

Total Fire Ban, when fires in the open air are legally restricted.

CFA declares Fire Danger Periods municipality by municipality at the onset of warmer weather. These restrictions are in place

until 1 May unless revoked or varied. In State forests, National, State and Regional Parks and on protected public land, fire

restrictions are in force all year round. Contact local DSE and Parks Victoria offices for advice on fire restrictions for these

areas.

Total Fire Bans are declared by CFA on days when fires are likely to spread rapidly and be difficult to control. The penalties for

lighting fires illegally during the Fire Danger Period and on Total Fire Ban Days include large fines and possible imprisonment.

The brochure is available for download from the CFA’s website http://www.cfa.vic.gov.au. The Brigade has limited copies of the brochure if you require a hard copy.

CFA Sunday is Sunday the 25th

of November. The Brigade Station will be open from 9.00 am until 11.00 am. Feel free to drop in and have a chat. The Brigade will also be holding the planned Community Fire Safety Session in the Primary School car park from 11.30 until 12.30

of various issues, events, government items and general points

of interest around Clunes.

This follows a successful email list which currently works for

members of the CTDA. There will be some of this information

which will be of interest to other members of the community

and creating this list will assist.

There is no joining fee or commitment. It is just an electronic

way of keeping in touch.

This is a community initiative.

Locals Switch to Save

Clunes community were included in more than 13,000

Victorians that participated in Bendigo Bank’s Switch to

Save initiative which may help home owners lower their

energy bills and reduce their impact on the environment.

The program partnered with Energy Makeovers and ran

through June and July inviting customers and members of

the community to visit a Bendigo Bank branch and sign up

to have Standby Power Controllers, called Embertec

SmartSwitches™, valued at $100 each installed in their

homes for free.

Creswick & District Community Bank®

Branch Manager Les

Vercoe said the simple switches have been installed in more

than 13,000 Victorian homes and 113 Clunes & Creswick

District homes

“The simple switches are already making a big difference

and could save households as much as $200 a year in

energy costs, but that’s not the only saving being made,

with each home reducing its average emissions by more

than 10 tonnes a year.

“When you consider this across the entire Switch to Save

program, that’s the equivalent of taking more than 30,000

cars off the road for a whole year,” Mr Vercoe said.

In addition to saving money and the environment, Bendigo

Bank also made a commitment to support local schools in

introducing or enhancing sustainable programs.

“For every participating household our branches will

distribute $17 to help support a neighbouring school

undertake sustainable projects,” Mr Vercoe said.

$1,921 will go to Clunes Primary School. Principal Chris

Simmons said the money will be used to assist with the

schools’ environmental sustainability project i.e.

establishment of an orchard or improvements to the school

surrounds.

“This is a fantastic show of support from the Creswick &

District Community Bank®

Branch and the Clunes Agency run

by Ken and Marg Gibson and we look forward to furthering

the education of our community’s young people in

environment and sustainability issues.”

Welcome to the Clunes Community Health Centre

update for another month. With the Cancer Council’s

Pink Ribbon day on the first of the month, October is

about Women’s Health. Is it time for your next FREE

screening mammogram? A screening mammogram

once every two years is a good way of looking after

your health for all women aged between 50-69 years

old. Screening mammograms are simply a low dose

breast X-ray for women without current symptoms or

changes. Screening mammograms can detect most

breast cancers when they are very small even before

they can be felt or noticed. Having a regular breast

screening mammogram is the best way to find breast

cancer early, when treatment is likely to be most

successful. If you have noticed an unusual change in

your breasts such as a lump, pain or discharge from

the nipple, it is important that you visit your doctor.

Nine out of ten women diagnosed with breast cancer

have no family history of the disease. While women

with a family history of breast cancer have a higher

than average risk, the biggest risk factor for breast

cancer is being a woman over 50 years of age.

Although women in their 40s and over 70 are outside

the BreastScreen program’s target age range, they are

still at risk of breast cancer and are eligible for FREE

screening mammograms with BreastScreen Victoria

every two years. A referral from your doctor is not

required just phone 13 20 50 to arrange your FREE

screening mammogram. More information is available

on www.breastscreen.org.au. Women are encouraged

to have breast screens however this is a personal

choice. If you are unsure about your risk of breast

cancer or whether breast screening mammograms

should be a priority for you, it is recommended that

you talk to your doctor or contact our Community

Health Nurses at the Community Health Centre.

Continuing on with the pink theme, Clunes retailers

will once again be awash with Pink as part of Hepburn

Health

Services health promotion activities in partnership

with the Hepburn Shire Women’s Health Working

Group (SWISH & SWAT), for the Hepburn Shire Goes

Pink to Support

Women’s Health. Due to the success of last year’s

promotion we are planning a major campaign in

November (Monday 5th

until Sunday 18th

) to increase

screening uptake and ultimately save lives through

early detection of breast cancer and prevention of

cervical cancer. The rate of women attending breast

screening is particularly low in Hepburn Shire; in most

postcode areas less than half eligible women have 2

yearly mammograms. Pap testing rates are also low

with the latest figures showing only 62% of eligible

women participating in this important life saving

screen test. Thank you to all the retailers that will be

decorating their windows pink for the campaign to

raise awareness and support women’s health.

At Hepburn Health Services we are committed to the

implementation of responsible environmental

management of waste which includes a recycling

policy. We routinely recycle paper, cardboard, plastics,

glass bottles and jars, steel and aluminium cans,

printer, fax and copier cartridges, batteries, postage

stamps (used) and wine corks but this month we have

added a new item to our recycling list......SPECTACLES!

As part of the Lions Clubs International Recycle for

Sight spectacles, sunglasses and frames of all sizes,

adult or child, can be regraded and distributed to

people in need around the world. To date 2.5 million

pairs of regraded eyeglass has been distributed around

the world including Africa, China, Indian, Europe etc. If

you have any old spectacles, sunglasses or frames you

would like to recycle please bring them into the Clunes

Community Health Centre and place them in our Lions

Clubs Recycle for Sight collection box and help those in

need around the world.

Warm wishes and kind regards,

What is Clunes

Waterways? We are a small group of community volunteers, (we would

like to be a bigger group) appointed under the Department

of Sustainability & Environment (DSE).

Our brief is to maintain the Creswick Creek from the

Government bridge to the Ford.

You will have noticed new plantings and weeding has taken

place along this area recently. Our funding comes by way of

small grants for specific projects, from Landcare and DSE.

Currently we are still waiting for some works, including

replacing the walking path to be completed by Flood

Recovery, then we can restore more areas, when funding

becomes available.

Students from the Primary school and Wesley College, as

part of their environmental studies, assist us in this venture.

It’s great to have some younger folk to help us, whilst they

learn and create a sense of achievement.

To join this enthusiastic group, please call June - 5345 3267,

Angela - 5345 3724 or Joy - 5345 3777. You will find it both

enjoyable and rewarding.

This is OUR CREEK and we all enjoy seeing a well maintained

asset to sit by, walk along and take our visitors to.

Clunes Community and Interpretive Centre Update

After 6 months of dedication and hard work by the Clunes Museum Committee of Management and volunteers, the

Museum‘s collection has been temporarily relocated to a specialist storage facility in Ballarat, whilst the Clunes Community

and Interpretive Centre (CCIC) is constructed.

Hepburn Shire Council would like to acknowledge the tremendous work undertaken by the Committee of Management and

volunteers, both in packing up the collection and re-locating the Museum’s administrative functions to the Hepburn Health

site. The work completed by all involved has been outstanding and its value to the CCIC project cannot be underestimated.

In an exciting next step for the CCIC project construction of the facility has commenced with initial works including demolition

and preparation of the site, excavation works and pouring of the slab. As confirmed in the October Community Newsletter,

Nicholson Construction, a Ballarat based firm was appointed to construct the facility. They have extensive experience in

building community facilities including museum spaces, libraries, visitor information centres and historic buildings.

Construction work may occur on the site between 6am and 6pm weekdays with weekend work allowed only by agreement

with Council. While there will be some impact upon Collins Place during construction, this will be kept to a minimum, with a

pathway retained through Collins Place between Bailey Street and Fraser Street for the duration of the works.

It is anticipated the new facility will be open before the end of 2013.

For more information about the CCIC project, visit www.hepburn.vic.gov.au, speak to your local Community Reference Group

representative, or contact Kathleen Brannigan, General Manager Community Services, Hepburn Shire Council on 03 5345

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Council Elections With the upcoming Council elections, I contacted both candidates to speak about the possibility of a Candidates Forum. Both candidates, Neil Newitt and Dennis Twentyman recognised the fact that both had appeared before a public meeting about 12 months ago, for the very same reason. The CTDA executive did some “research” into what the community would expect, and we all agreed that another forum so soon was unnecessary. Accommodation & Eating Out brochure Sue Orbach-Iles has already completed a comprehensive list of accommodation houses with their details and is now completing the Eating Out list. When this has been done, we shall produce an inexpensive brochure plus update our website. Those who are not CTDA members are invited to join the CTDA, to be included in this promotion. Car Clubs I have provided Steve Davies with car club lists which he is updating, plus the promotional brochure that was previously used to invited car clubs to visit Clunes. We shall work together to update this flyer for posting to car clubs. Familiarisation meetings I thank Matte Crane for her ongoing work to hold some famil meetings in the future. These will be interesting and informative meetings for our members. Parking in Fraser Street I have written and circulated a letter to all traders in Fraser Street to encourage them to park somewhere else rather than in Fraser Street at weekends. This will make more space available for customers.

Clunes Community Newsletter

There has been a “changing of the guard” for the Clunes

Community Newsletter.

For the past two years, Neil Newitt has kindly

volunteered his time to do the layout and production on

a monthly basis.

Due to other work commitments, Neil has handed the

responsibility over to Jill a recently arrived resident in

Clunes who kindly volunteered to help out. Jill is

enthusiastic and dedicated and we thank her most

sincerely for helping.

To produce the Clunes Community Newsletter on a

monthly basis, it takes over 12 hours volunteer work,

taking into consideration layout, proof reading and

administration of invoicing. This does not include

printing and folding before distribution.

We take this opportunity of thanking Neil for his time

and effort over the past 2 years. Without his dedication

and professionalism, the continuation of the Clunes

Community Newsletter was in doubt.

Neil has expressed to us he would like to thank those

that contributed and supported the Newsletter over this

time.

Also just a friendly reminder all articles are to be in by

22nd

of each month and to be sent to email

[email protected] only.

Variety of Activities for Clunes Youth Clunes CWA and Clunes Art Group have been organizing activities for young people in Clunes for some months now, and these are going very well. On the third Saturday morning of each month, there is an Art class at the Library, for young people aged 11 plus. On the other Saturdays and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, there are less structured activities run by volunteers, for young people of any age. There has also been a mural painted in the Library's courtyard. On one Saturday afternoon per month (usually the 4th) CWA volunteers run cooking and craft sessions at the Neighbourhood House. Attendances on most days are quite high and numbers are steadily increasing. A group of young people have formed themselves into a Youth Group and this group is working very collaboratively with the adult leaders. Any young people not aware of what is on offer are always welcome to join in. We are currently awaiting the outcome of an application for funding of the Youth activities and if successful, we will be able to continue and enhance the current programs, as well as offer workshops in the school holidays, in areas of interest to various youth – e.g. painting, sculpture, creative writing, photography etc. With the amount of talent in Clunes, we are confident of being able to provide whatever is requested. We also plan to initiate a program to help young people with their schoolwork (a homework club or something like that) Currently, the work with youth is mostly being done voluntarily and most expenses are met through donations. There is some funding from Hepburn Shire and we are very grateful to the Librarian, Catherine Hill, for her enthusiastic encouragement of the young people utilizing the Library's space. If we are not successful with our funding application, we will need to fund raise and seek donations. Any adults interested in assisting are very welcome to contact us. Please leave your name and details with the Librarian or at the Neighbourhood House, and one of us will get back to you. A community can't do better than nurture its young people. submitted by Judy Burn
