We sincerely hope the 10th Anniversary Clunes Booktown Festival weekend can be a great one for you, whatever you’re doing at the time. If you are heading into town to get a newspaper or something, please know that we’ve organised express entrances for ‘Locals, VIPs and Media’ this year, at the Service Street ends of Bailey and Fraser Streets. No more waiting you get priority entrance through your own doorway! ALL author talks are free for you as well. And if you don’t know the person on the entrance… Richard Mackay - Scollay, Creative Clunes CEO, says: “Please remember that all locals with a postcode of 3370 or who own property in that code - are welcome to attend the Festival for free and all kids aged 14 and under are also free. Please use the attached voucher, or bring your ID, such as driving license, electricity or water bill, or anything that proves you live in the area, to show our volunteers on the entry points. You will receive your very own ‘owl’ entry badges.” Hopefully a one-page info sheet should have reached your letterbox recently. We should also mention that if you and your family have a keen interest in seeing Stan Grant ( 2.30pm) and Anna Bligh ( 4pm) present in the St Thomas Aquinas Church on Saturday, our capacity is limited to 230 people. You will need to get there early and queue to get into those two talks. If you want to be sure to get a seat, we suggest attending Sean Gorman’s talk at 1.30pm on indigenous footy. For people who do not fit inside, we will have a big screen outside (thanks to the Footy Club) with an audio and video feed to it, and straw bales in the Church yard for seating. Members of the Young Farmers Club will monitor crowds. Extra special thanks to Father Gary Jones and the Clunes Catholic community for allowing us to use the Church both days for this very special event. Recently a nice lady was telling me Clunes Booktown Festival is the absolute highlight of her year. She puts money aside from her pension every fortnight, saves hard, then books her annual flight over from Tassie, to be with us. Before moving deeper into the country, I lived in ‘Ballarat Central’ for ten years. My family’s annual highlight, and reminder of what’s so great about the Goldfields, was coming to this Festival. I watched my daughter grow up here, taking photos of her at every Festival; I watched my late Mum, Barbara, getting unusually excited about the future of Clunes; I watched my late Dad, David, reunite with his sister at a picnic by the creek here, just before he died. I’ve felt proud bringing family and friends from interstate to see Clunes. For a decade, I’ve been thinking how special this place is, and how I want to be a bigger part of it, and make a contribution... Be careful what you wish for! Anyway, this absolutely amazing town full of volunteers, with diverse talents and expertise, will start Booktown: Pre-Festival Update! (Continued page 3)

A message from the Presidentby Michael Cheshire

A Successful EasterI hope you all had a great Easter! I certainly did.Clunes benefitted by visitors from the Clunes

TriState Event, which involved 4 x 4 vehicles, caravans, tents with club members from South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria camping on 75 camp sites at the showgrounds. They arrived Maundy Thursday afternoon and left on various dates from Easter Monday onwards. Some were still staying over a week later. We certainly enjoyed their company.

A survey of club members confirmed that each site would have spent around $450 in town, which totals $33,750.

I received this email from Events Organiser Alan Dash …

“Thank you and the Clunes community for making visitors feel so welcome in your community. Feedback from businesses, community persons and participants alike are all saying it was successful. No doubt many interstate Jackaroo Club members will be returning to the area as a consequence.”

Clunes will be happy to welcome you all back Alan.

Happy Anniversary Wesley! This year Wesley College celebrates their 150th

anniversar y and the good people o f Clunes congratulates them on this magnificent milestone. Many students have passed through the school over the years and have grown in knowledge, a culture of getting wisdom and caring for their community. We thank them, in particular, for their contribution and partnership with the Clunes community and wish them well for the next 150 years.

...and from the editorby Jane Lesock

Thank You, Sahm!I take this opportunity to thank Sahm Keily who

kindly offered to do layout of the Clunes Community Newsletter whilst Lily was on maternity leave.

Working with Sahm was a delight. Nothing was too much trouble or fuss. Sahm’s contribution and professionalism ensured that the Clunes Community Newsletter continued, printed and distributed on time.

As Sahm lives in Clunes with her family, has offered her volunteer time again if needed. Wonderful to have this backup and greatly appreciated.

Lily is now back on board with help from little Meg.

Clunes Website - www.clunes.orgWith so many new families coming to live in

Clunes I am being asked regularly for info on different types of services, trade people and retailers in the area.

Last year the CTDA launched a new website www.clunes.org listing a Business Directory to ensure local traders and retailers are promoted.

It is easy to find. Go to www.clunes.org click on “eat stay shop” where there will be a “drop down” and “business directly” will appear.

Every attempt is made to keep this up to date but we need your help for this to happen.

If you know of any new person in town that could be included, please call in and see Jane at Mount Beckworth Wines to give the details.

Masonic Lodge lends support to welfare program by Erryn Stephens, Manager Communications, Fundraising & Grants Hepburn Health Service

The Emergency Relief Program at Clunes Community Health has received a much needed boost with a donation of $3,300 from the All Nations Masonic Lodge in Clunes and the Freemasons Foundation Victoria.

The Program, delivered by the Welfare Services Team at Hepburn Health, supports approximately 130 individuals each year through providing assistance in the form of food and fuel vouchers, material aide, utility bill payments as well as crisis intervention, information, advocacy and referral services.

The Program is available to those on a current healthcare card with financial assistance capped at $150 for singles and $300 per family, per annum. In 2014-15 Hepburn Health delivered $6,907 in Emergency Relief to clients in and around Clunes.

“Hepburn Health is the sole provider of Emergency Relief to communities across Hepburn Shire,” says Trish Collocott, CEO Hepburn Health. “The Program is critical in supporting our communities with Hepburn Shire ranked the highest in disadvantage across the Central Highlands region. “

“We very much appreciate the contribution of the All Nations Masonic Lodge and the United Grand Lodge of Victoria in supporting this program. The donation of $3,300 will go a long way to supporting vulnerable people in Clunes and surrounding areas.”

The cheque was presented to Trish Collocott by Ray Jessup, Worshipful Master of the All Nations Lodge accompanied by Garry Elliot.

The Freemasons of Victoria continue to make considerable support to local communities and Clunes is no exception.

Plantings along the creek bank are continuing to thrive despite the extended summer we had.   Unfortunately the weeds are also doing well and need constant attention but every month we make good progress clearing areas. Our next working bee will be held on Sunday 29 May at 9.30, meeting at the footy ground. There are jobs for anyone of any age and we're always grateful for any help we can get. Youth 3370: Building Community One Teenager at a Time

Clunes teenagers, once described as ‘ghosts’ in a 2014 Health Needs Assessment by local authorities, have become the leading voice behind an emerging new Youth 3370 group in town. Over the last twelve months, Clunes Neighbourhood House has assisted a team of local teenagers to tap into local government resources and community assets to understand their own needs, and identify solutions that they can not only implement – but lead.

“The risks that impact on our children’s ability to grow into happy, resilient adults are huge. A recent study showed that children at 10 years old, are more resilient than their 15 year old counterparts. Why is that? It’s because 10 year olds have access to stronger support networks, as well as opportunities to question, explore and develop independence safely. Our teenagers often don’t,” said Ms Anna Phillips, committee member of Clunes Neighbourhood House.

“Clunes Neighbourhood House has only three priorities. Getting to know our neighbours, assisting our ne ighbours , and contr ibut ing to our neighbourhood. To do that sustainably we need to help the ‘communities within our community’ develop the skills and understanding to advocate for their own needs, and work towards addressing the problems they encounter.” said Ms Phillips, “Nowhere is this more important, than with the children and teenagers who will be our future leaders.”

“We want to have a band, a place to call our own and manage, space to create and perform,” said Miss Alex Turner, 16 years old. “Through working with Clunes Neighbourhood House we’ve been able to present our idea to council, develop grants and work with other organisations to access equipment, mentors

and hopefully down the track – our own dedicated space.”

Importantly, this dedicated space is proposed to be at the heart of a historic Bottle Museum site where Clunes Neighbourhood House is located, and adjacent to the Men’s Shed and Community Garden. In a town where social isolation is very real, this co-location will provide vital support networks that are strongly encouraged by local authorities, in particular Hepburn Health. This site is also emerging as an active maker’s space, with large grounds that could be home to a proposed Amphitheatre and free form play space.

“At the first birthday of the Clunes Farmers Market, we raised awareness of Youth 3370 and our band mentor performed, and later in the month, will be part of a huge celebration during Book Town at the proposed site of Youth 3370,” said Miss Turner, “It’s a great chance to show people what’s possible if they get behind us.”

“Through the Hepburn Youth Ideas Competition, we e ven mana ged to secure $ 1000 towards instruments,” said enthused Miss Turner, who has never applied for grant support for an idea before.

“Working with Clunes Neighbourhood House as our auspicing partner, we intend to build on our skills from this point forward, to not only fill the gaps we feel exist for youth in our town, but help other younger kids do the same in the future as well.”

Other organisations expressing supporting or assisting Youth 3370’s plans for the future include Clunes Primary School, Hepburn Shire Council, Hepburn Health, Wesley College and the Clunes Artists Group. If you are interested in supporting this youth-led initiative, call Clunes Neighbourhood House on 03 5345 4078 or visit www.clunesnh.org

BRING A FRIEND (NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE WEEK – STARTS 9TH MAY)

Celebrate getting to know your neighbours by ‘bringing a friend’ along to the Community Lunches and Dinners during this week. Introduce them to others and share a bite to eat with the whole ‘neighbourhood’! Go in the draw to win local gift vouchers and hamper.

IMPACT ACROSS COMMUNITY – BUS BOOST

Remember I said the work we’d been doing with our Outdoor Crew helping maintain community organisations sites has been given an unexpected and exciting boost?! Well, thanks to Hepburn Health, we have been fortunate enough to have access to their bus. This significantly reduces our programs costs, and enables us to think even more creatively about how we could build on this collaboration to contribute to our neighbourhood.

Autumn Fire SafetyA message from the Clunes Fire Brigade

Heating Your HomeAs summer turns to autumn, it’s a good idea to

refresh your memory on autumn fire safety tips. Some safety tips are the same regardless of the time of year, but many safety concerns are seasonal, particularly those that involve keeping your home warm.

Central HeatingGet your central heating system cleaned, inspected

and serviced by a certified HVAC (heating, venting and air conditioning) contractor every year before using it. Keep all flammable materials away from your furnace.  This includes clothing, paint products, toxic materials, cardboard and more.

Fireplaces and WoodstovesHave heating appliances serviced and chimney flues

examined for defects. Have fireplaces and fireplace dampers checked. Fireplaces should be equipped with an appropriate screen or glass enclosure to prevent sparks from flying out. Wood burning stoves should be examined and the flue and chimney checked for creosote buildup. Creosote is a deposit from smoke that can build up in a chimney and can start a fire.

Never use a flammable liquid to start a fire.Put all ashes outdoors and away from the house in

a metal container. Wait for the ashes to be cold to touch before disposing of them further.

Space HeatersNever place clothing or any other objects on a

space heater to dry. Turn space heaters off when you leave the house or go to bed. Avoid storing any combustible items near heaters.

FREE LIBRARY TO CLOSE DOWNFinancial Position Leaves No Alternative

At a special meeting of the Free Lending Library Committee and subscribers on Monday night it was resolved that the reading section of the Library be closed as from June 30, and that the institution be dissolved as from September 3.

Chairman of the Committee, Mr T. Harden, said the Committee was at a loss to know what to do to carry on. Lack of support from the people of Clunes had made the

task more difficult, and the Library finances were such that each month saw the position become worse.

The Treasurer, Mr G.H. Smith quoted figures to show the Reading section had never been able to pay its way, but these losses have been offset by income from the Billiard room and rental of rooms. He said the institution would soon be bankrupt unless there was additional support from the public At the moment there are 35 subscribers and this in a town of a population of more than 1000. An estimate had been obtained for urgent maintenance work to the building and this amounted to 283 pounds seventeen shillings.

Local resident Mr. A.McRae commended the committee for their efforts and said “it was easily seen by the lack of interest shown by subscribers at the meeting (there were three present) that they had no thoughts for the future of the institution, and their lack of interest meant there was no option but to close the Library. If the Library had the support of a third of the population of Clunes it could become self supporting, but with so few subscribers it was impossible to carry on.”

After the Clunes Free Library closed in 1951, it has been the venue for a number of local activities including :

1/ Billiards2/ Scouts3/ Neighborhood House 4/ Booktown book salesDue to movement of the reactive soil on which the

foundations lie, an internal brick wall has unfortunately started to collapse and for safety reasons both affected side rooms have been cordoned off. However the hall is currently available as an exhibition space for art, ceramic and sculpture displays.or commercial use.

A small group of dedicated individuals have banded together and have been working towards a long term goal of fully restoring the Free Library, and bringing it into the 21st century by providing disabled friendly access.

Should you be interested and would like to contribute time or funds to help restore this iconic heritage building please contact: Reg Kinnersly on 5345 3017.

Booktown on SundaySunday 15 May at 2pm at The Warehouseby Lily Mason

On the third Sunday each month, Clunes is treated to talks by some of Australia’s most interesting writers. This month, we’ll be joined by Martin McKenzie-Murray whose book A Murder without Motive: the killing of Rebecca Ryle has recently been published by Penguin Australia.

This stunning book is a police procedural, a meditation on suffering, and an exploration of how the different parts of the justice system make sense of the senseless. It is also a unique memoir: a mapping of the suburbs that the author grew up in, and a revelation of the dangerous underbelly of adolescent ennui. Martin McKenzie-Murray is The Saturday Paper's chief correspondent. He is a former Canberra speechwriter, Age columnist, and adviser to the chief commissioner of Victoria Police.

In 2004, the body of a young Perth woman was found on the grounds of a primary school. Her name was Rebecca Ryle. The kil l ing would mystify investigators, lawyers, and psychologists — and profoundly rearrange the life of the victim's family.

It would also involve the author's family, because his brother knew the man charged with the murder.

For years, the two had c i rc led each other suspiciously, in a world of violence, drugs, and rotten aspirations.

    ' A w r i t e r o f exceptional moral heft . . . He feels and is felt on every page.' Erik Jensen, author o f Ac u t e Misfortune: The Life and Death of Adam Cullen

'At the time of her death, one man stripped away Rebecca Ryle's dignity. In some small way, those involved in the telling of this story have reinstated that dignity with love, thoughtfulness, and a passion to challenge the status quo.' Ken Lay, former Chief Commissioner, Victoria Police.

Talks are held at The Warehouse - Clunes at 2pm on the third Sunday of each month. Author talks are organised by Creative Clunes, Inc and supported by Hepburn Shire Council.

Steamed Leg of Mutton, - Take the bone out of a small tender leg of mutton. Chop some apple and onion very finely; season them with powdered mace, cinnamon, a few cloves and a wineglassful of red currant jelly. Fill the cavity made by removing the bone with the stuffing, roll it tightly, and place it in a double cooking pot, so that the water will not touch the meat. Make good gravy with stock, red currant jelly, and port wine. When the meat is cooked place it in a deep dish and pour the gravy over it. Send to the table on a very hot dish.
