clunes.orgThe CTDA has been working through the

updating of our website clunes.org. We have sent out invitations to all community groups, sporting clubs, church organisations, arts groups and the like, to have their own, free of charge, web page.

If you belong to such a group and have not received an invitation, I apologise. Please email me at [email protected] and I shall forward you the information sheet for your response. If you have, please compete the form and return it to me soon.

Should your group already have a website, please still take up this offer, as it will possibly provide information about your group to more people and further afield. We shall also include what information you provide with a link to your website.

We initiated this plan to benefit the good people of Clunes. We wanted to have a one-stop-shop of information, of what was available in Clunes, for our community.

Clunes Farmers’ MarketWhat a great day it was for the launch of Clunes

Farmers’ Market. Congratulations go to Leanne Kamp and her committee who have put together an exciting and professional event. Leanne has worked tirelessly, over some years, to make it happen and I am sure that the Clunes community would like to join me in grateful thanks for a job well done.

The CTDA is proud to have played a small part in getting it underway.

Community notice boardCongratulations to the Council for responding to

the wishes of the Clunes community by moving the Community notice board next to the visitor map in Collins Place.

Thanks also to the volunteers from The Warehouse who have offered to manage the notice board for the community.

If you have a notice to post on the board, please take it in to The Warehouse information centre and they will assist you in their friendly way

Tourello Friends of Red Cross by Janet Harrison

‘Friends’ simply means no office bearers. Red Cross still runs exactly the same we always have. Meetings about every three months on the first Thursday of the month. Our next meeting is May 7 at 2pm at the RSL hall.

We had our March Appeal stall in Fraser Street on Saturday 7 March. We had a lot of small raffles: there was fruit from Jos, wine from Mount Beckworth, fruit cake from Marg, and 10 buckets of groceries donated by members. We raised $300 and this money goes straight to Melbourne into the State March Appeal.

Our annual meeting will be in July at the Senior Citizens. Enquiries to Janet Harrison 5345 3060.

A Winter Warmer!by Jill Taig, Clunes Garden Club

Ann is an artist who uses a variety of mediums including pastels , pen and ink, charcoal and photography. One of Ann’s interests is in wildlife and pet portraiture. Ann will share her tips for recording special moments in your garden.

Garden Club would like to invite all interested to come along enjoy this meeting with us.

Morning tea will be provided, and there will be the opportunity to purchase plants and produce.

Monday 1 June at 10am in the Senior Citizens’ Rooms, 26 Fraser Street. Further information - Jill Taig 0438 640 431.

Clunes Community Notice Boardby Jane Lesock, CTDA

As you are all aware the Notice Board has been relocated to the side wall of The Warehouse, next to the Clunes Town Map.

Any notices that need to be displayed should be left at the reception desk at The Warehouse, where the volunteers will arrange for them to be placed. To ensure all notices are displayed within the space provided, they are to be no bigger than A5 size.

Also as an extra free service to our local trade people, The Warehouse are happy to provide a "local listing" for those seeking a particular trade.

All that will be required is a form to be filled out with your details.

We take this opportunity to thank Alison Pithers, who has for many years volunteered her time in keeping the Clunes Community Notice Board up to date and neat and you would have to say the "best kept" Board in the district. Thank you Alison your contribution has not gone unnoticed and was appreciated.

The Warehouse is open every day except Tuesdays.

Autumn Fire Safety Part 1A message from the Clunes Fire Brigade, a fully volunteer Fire Bri-gade serving Clunes and District since 1864.

Heating Your HomeAs summer turns to autumn, it’s a good idea to

refresh your memory on autumn fire safety tips. Some safety tips are the same regardless of the time of year, but many safety concerns are seasonal, particularly those that involve keeping your home warm.

Central HeatingGet your central heating system cleaned, inspected

and serviced by a certified HVAC (heating, venting and air conditioning) contractor every year before using it.

Keep all flammable materials away from your furnace. This includes clothing, paint products, toxic materials, cardboard and more.

Fireplaces and WoodstovesHave heating appliances serviced and chimney flues

examined for defects. Have fireplaces and fireplace dampers checked. Fireplaces should be equipped with an appropriate screen or glass enclosure to prevent sparks from flying out.

Wood burning stoves should be examined and the flue and chimney checked for creosote buildup. Creosote is a deposit from smoke that can build up in a chimney and can start a fire.

Never use a flammable liquid to start a fire.Put all ashes outdoors and away from the house in

a metal container.

Space HeatersNever place clothing or any other objects on a

space heater to dry. Turn space heaters off when you leave the house or go to bed. Avoid storing any combustible items near heaters.

Thank Youby Michael Cheshire

Joy and I wish to thank all those people who have extended good wishes and their prayers on the occasion of the passing of my Mother, Jean Cheshire.

Vale Peter BullardFrom the team at the Clunes Community Newsletter

Our condolences and sympathy to Anne and family on the recent passing of Peter. When the Clunes Community Newsletter had to be printed out of town, it was Peter that assured us it was printed, folded and hand-delivered on time for distribution. We will always be grateful for Peter's dedication to this. Rest in peace.

Clunes Landcare & Waterways by June Johnstone

Clunes Landcare recently negotiated with North Central Catchment Management Authority for the removal of suckers and weed material along the creek.  This work has been commenced by contractors Bushco from Castlemaine.

The Green Army also spent a day removing elm weed material in the area close to the footbridge.

The maintenance and management of the creek by the Clunes Landcare group is vital for both the creek environment and the wellbeing of the many species of animals, birds, frogs and fish that inhabit the waterways.

Clunes Landcare continues to apply for grants so that the projects which benefit the creek can continue.

We are a small voluntary group so your help at working bees is vital, please come along and join us in this valuable community project.

Landcare Working Bee Sunday 23 May 9.30am. Meet at Queens Park. Tools provided.

Notes from the Pastfrom the Clunes Museum

Article from the Clunes Guardian and Gazette May 1900:

How to Go ShoppingNever buy any article without a reference to the

rest of your clothes. If you can wear it with nothing else, it will be quite wasted. Never buy a thing you do not want just because it is cheap.

Don’t buy an article merely because it is pretty, when you have not the faintest idea whether it will suit you. Do not buy clothes at the end of the season because their price is reduced, Fashions change so quickly that they seldom come in for next season. When you buy shoes and boots, try them on both feet, as sometimes both do not fit.

When you buy underlinen, look at the material and the stitching more than the trimming. A good plain article, well made, is better than cheap finery. Never buy anything that is too smart or too noticeable to go with the rest of your dress. It will have the effect of making the whole look shabby.

Above all things, make up your mind not to go to sales, for too often the goods marked at low figures are altogether worthless, and manufactured expressly for the sale.

Recognition and ThanksWith the recent changes to our Committee of

Management, it is time to recognise the contribution made by retiring members.

In order of seniority:Ms Jan Turner Jan has

been involved with CNH since 1989: a massive 26 years of commitment , w i sdom and perseverance. Jan has witnessed every high and low for CNH

since its inception and her steadying commonsense approach will be missed by all.

Ian Baker Ian has been a Committee member since Oct. 2008 and in Ian’s usual low key pragmatic manner has also been witness to our many highlights and travails.

A keen advocate for the Men’s Shed, Ian moves on to focus on his business empire.

John Armao John has been with CNH since April 2013 as an advocate for the Men’s Shed and an invaluable general handyman (and p lumber ) and a s our Secretary.

His wise and understated counsel has been most valued.

David Callinan David joined CNH Committee in 2014 and continued his already considerable involvement as a volunteer.

His dedication to the Community Garden and assistance at CNH as our stock controller and archivist has been invaluable. His expertise as our sound and projection expert has also been highly valued and we hope David continues his involvement as a volunteer.

Not many small towns have their own retail winery outlet. In yet another coup, Clunes has! Paul and Jane Lesock have operated the Mount Beckworth winery, in the beautiful hills just beyond the township of Clunes, since 1991. In 2006, they opened their retail outlet in Fraser St, and in fact were one of the first wineries in the district to do so. Since then they haven’t looked back.

Paul and Jane both worked for the National Bank, for many years, and they lived in Camberwell. But Paul had always longed to run a vineyard. Like many people who move to Clunes to live, they realised a dream. Paul and Jane took the move slowly, buying the land (in 1984) and starting off with a two-room weekender shack, while planting the vineyard and continuing their employment in Melbourne through the week. By 1991, Paul was able to move permanently to Mount Beckworth. This was after 24 years working in the bank, so it was a big change for him, but one he has never regretted. Jane commuted to Melbourne to work for a while, before transferring to the Maryborough branch of the National bank. She final ly left employment in 1997 and the couple were able to focus creatively on building their business.

Paul undertook viticulture training between 1983 and 1990 and also completed several short courses in wine-making. In 1992 he produced his first wine under the Mount Beckworth label, a Cabernet Merlot, which was followed quickly by a Chardonnay, a Shiraz and a Pinot Noir. Since then, Paul has continued to focus on those four varieties, although he also started producing a sparkling white in 2012. Jane’s strength is the marketing and promotional side of the business, and she has successfully made Mount Beckworth winery into an icon within the Clunes community.

Jane and Paul’s focus has always been to build up a market for their wine in regional Victoria, and they now have a strong customer base in this district, supplying many restaurants and hotels with their high quality wines. Nowadays, they don’t have retail outlets in Melbourne at all, although customers still come up from the city to buy. Jane and Paul have aimed to provide visitors with a wide experience of the town of Clunes, and the region. Thus they set up their outlet in a section of Fraser St which concentrates on food and drink. They arranged with Jos the Fruiterer and Michael and Tim from Widow Twankeys, to have the same tables and chairs out the front, and similar banners. They encourage people to intermingle between the three shops, and thus people can buy from any of the three businesses and sit at any of the tables. This is the exact opposite of places you’ll see in the

city, where signs say: these tables are for X customers only. In the ‘Paris End’ of Fraser St (a phrase which Jane coined and which has s tuck ) peop le can exper ience a ver y sociable atmosphere.

Jane and Paul have numerous regu la r customers , some of whom come to Clunes primarily to buy Mount Beckworth wine. Most love the ambience of the town and are happy to be recognised when they return for repeat visits. They are encouraged to check out all the other businesses in Fraser St and Service St, so their time here will be a rich and interesting experience.

Apart from their thriving winery business, Jane and Paul are also very committed to the Clunes Tourism and Development Association (CTDA) which does such a lot for the town, often without fanfare. Both have been members since they first came to Clunes, and Jane has been Treasurer for most of that time. The CTDA auspices many other, smaller local groups, enabling them to apply for funding, stage events and obtain publicity. Jane and Paul have put in hundreds of volunteer hours over the years, ensuring the success of various functions, such as the annual Community Dinner, the Organs of the Goldfields Festival, Feast on Fraser and many more.

In 2011, Jane was rewarded for her efforts by winning the Clunes female Citizen of the Year award; this was followed by the Hepburn Shire’s Australia Day Citizen of the year Award in 2012.

Paul has also been recognised for his 30 year dedication to the wine making industry by being made a Life Member of the Ballarat Vignerons Group.

Over the past 25 years, Paul and Jane have won over 80 awards for their wines, at various local wine shows. They are very proud of these, but much more modest about their achievements for the community. They have built a successful business which enables them to make a good living, but which at the same time enhances Clunes and the district enormously. Fortunately for the town, they are not the only ones with a strong community-building ethic. Clunes is lucky to have such positive, hard-working residents, of whom Jane and Paul are great examples.

Talbot Provender Store ProposalOperator Being Soughtby Maria Abate

Hepburn Shire Council, in conjunction with the Central Goldfields Shire Council, are calling for expressions of interest in establishing a provender store in the historic town of Talbot.

Talbot is already well known for its successful farmers market which takes place once a month and attracts hundreds of visitors to the town. The provender store proposal has been developed to offer the public an outlet for local produce on non-market days.

The proposal is one of a number of projects being funded by the State Government through the Advancing Country Towns program and provides up to $93,000 to assist in fit-out and other establishment costs to the successful applicant.

Mayor of the Central Goldfields Shire Council, Cr Wendy McIvor, said this is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in establishing a business in the growing market of quality food, local ingredients and fresh wholesome produce.

“The building to be made available is situated in the very heart of Talbot adjacent to a successful bistro business, which is part of a complex that provides a garden setting and focal point in the town,” said Cr McIvor.

Talbot is situated on the Highway between Clunes and Maryborough and is in close proximity to the Avoca wine growing area, and numerous primary producers providing produce including livestock products, fruit and vegetables, cheese, oils and many other quality products.

Entrepreneurs with experience in retail and/or hospitality are invited to access the expression of interest documents through the Hepburn Shire Council website at www.hepburn.vic.gov.au.
