St. David’s Memorial Garden at St. David’s Episcopal Church

Saturday, October 31 at 12:00 p.m.

A brief service of prayers for the faithful departed,

especially remembering those whose ashes are interred in the Memorial Garden.

Warm Coat Drive . . . A jacket or sweatshirt feels good in the morning right now, but soon it will be a necessity. Most of us have one (or two or three or…) ready for that first frosty day, but there are households right here in North Fulton for whom that is not true. Do you (or your children) have one hanging in your closet that you never wore last year? Or one that is still nice, but has been outgrown? Or have you seen a bargain on a new one? North Fulton Community Charities is having a Warm Coat Drive. Will you bring a new or clean gently used jacket, coat, hoodie, or sweatshirt to church? You can put it in the big blue bin at the end of the mailbox hallway. We’ll take it from there!

STEPHEN MINISTRY IS THERE FOR YOU!

CONNECTIONS CAFÉ TO BEGIN OCT. 25

“SCHUBERT’S MASS IN G” COMING NOV. 1

October 7, 2015

Sunday, November 1st, Youth and Adult Choirs will offer Franz Schubert’s Mass in G

at 9:00 and 11:15am services. These St. David’s choirs will be joined by a string quartet and guest vocal soloists for this special All Saints Day worship service. Movements of the Mass will be sung throughout the service, as was originally intended by the composer. Franz Schubert composed the Mass in G Major in six days during 1815, at the tender age of 18. The Mass begins with the Kyrie—a brief invocation and petition. The second move-ment—the Gloria—begins with the angelic hymn, Gloria in excelsis Deo, which was sung by the angels at the birth of Christ. This is followed by several sections: acclamations (we praise thee, we bless thee, we adore thee, we glorify thee); invocations (Love God, heavenly King); petitions (have mercy upon us); and a doxology (For thou only art holy).

The third movement, the Credo, is the longest. This is a musi-cal setting of the Nicene Creed. The text was approved by the Council of Nicaea in 325. The words of the Sanctus are adapted from the words of the cherubim in Isaiah 6:3. The text of the Benedictus is from Mat-thew 21:9, where Christ’s entry into Jerusalem is greeted with shouts of hosannas. The final movement, the Agnus Dei, is made up of texts found in the Gloria and in the words of John the Baptist (John 1:25-26, 29).

The word “mass” comes from the dismissal (ite missa est—“go, the mass is ended”).

Connections Café will begin on Sunday, October 25, at 10:15 a.m., in Grace Parish Hall. You will meet over coffee to talk about St. David’s and the Episcopal Church. This class is intended for visitors, new members or anyone interested in knowing more about St. David’s. Topics for each class are listed below. The class is led by Jan Georges, Assistant to the Rector for Invita-tion and Integration. If you have any questions please call Jan at 770-993-1094, ext 118.

Our Stephen Ministers Are Ready to Care for You! We all go through times in our life when we could benefit from a little extra care and atten-

tion. That's what Stephen Ministers are for. Stephen Ministers are members of St. David’s who have been extensively trained to provide confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to people who are going through a difficult time. They will listen, care, encourage, pray with and for you, and provide weekly sup-

port for you as long as your need persists. If you would like to find out more about Stephen Ministry for yourself or someone you know, talk with one of our Stephen Leaders: Janet Conrad or Don Baggett.

Our Stephen Ministers are ready to bring God's love and care into your life.

STEWARDSHIP NOTE

DAUGHTERS OF THE KING OFFERS TRAINING

www.stdavidchurch.org

Do you Do you Do you Do you Live to Give Live to Give Live to Give Live to Give or or or or Live to GetLive to GetLive to GetLive to Get????

I’m asking you to consider the above from the perspective of your generosity, the source of your JOY. The clearest example I can give regarding this contrast is that special feeling of JOY on Christmas morning. Not the pious but the secular aspects of the day - the gifts, the boxes, the ribbons, the bows. As a child, the JOY was in Getting. Coming down the stairs to see our Christmas tree with presents under it, or a new bike next to it lit up my eyes and brought a smile to my face that could be wiped away. ‘It’s a miracle!’‘Santa came!’ My parents sat, exhausted in their chairs having gotten little rest the night before but with JOY exuding from them knowing that my sister and I were experiencing a level of JOY reserved for that special day. I pray you can still recall those mornings with the glee of a child’s heart.

But as I got older and started buying presents for others the JOY shifted from Getting to Giving. Striving to find that perfect gift for someone, hunting for something unique to show my affection to each gift recipient, making others happy now creates my JOY. I imagine many of you can share in this maturation path. What I’ve found is that I can obtain that level of JOY throughout the year by constantly looking to do

God’s will, by freely Giving of my time, my talent and my treasure.

No one should get out of bed saying, “I look forward to being mediocre today.” Instead, may I offer for your consideration to start your day by looking for someone or something to Give some of yourself to. Looking at life through these rose colored lenses helps me get out of bed every morning welcoming the chance to serve the Lord, to advance His Kingdom, to experience JOY that is only available through Him who knows us better than we know ourselves. Daughters of the King is offering a discernment training for

women of St. David’s who desire an additional pathway of

faith and service. We are an order, not an organization. Our

quiet commitment is to live a Rule of Life based on our

Baptismal Covenant. At St. David’s we vow to pray daily for

our church, our priests, and the world. We also provide

warm, elegant receptions for funerals held at St. David’s as

well as hosting the Lenten and Advent Quiet Days.

No special spiritual attributes are needed to become a

Daughter of the King – only a sincere desire to draw nearer

to God, and to help others do the same. We are women who

work to spread Christ’s Kingdom here on earth.

Our upcoming discernment training classes are on

Mondays, January 11, through April 4, at 7 pm, with a break

during Holy Week. We will gather in the Hope classroom in

the downstairs classes of Jeffords Hall for approximately

one and one half hours.

If you are seeking a safe place in a busy world where women

can be together and support each other through prayer and

service, Daughters of the King could be a good choice for

you. Call Margot 770-617-0629, Tricia 678-533-8885, or

Rene 678-334-8300, for more information and to register.

St Francis: Not Just a Garden StatueSt Francis: Not Just a Garden StatueSt Francis: Not Just a Garden StatueSt Francis: Not Just a Garden Statue

Everyone has heard the story of St. Francis preaching to the birds, but have you heard the story of him returning all of his clothes to his father and running into the countryside naked? How about the cross from which Jesus instructed to him to “Fix my church?” Did you know that the Pope rejected him? Or that he brought peace to Assisi by arbitrating between the rich and the poor? How about the day he cast a demon into the abyss near his cave? His decision to preside over the Eucharist although he was not a priest? Or when he received the stigmata. Then there were his deathbed writings holding nothing back in his criticism of the church. And what about the woman (not St. Clare) who broke all the rules to be with him as he died?

For three Sundays (Oct 25, Nov. 1, 8), Dr. April Love-Fordham, who spent St. Francis’s feast day in Assisi in 2014 and the two weeks afterwards following in the last steps of St. Francis, will be telling the incredible life stories of St. Francis at the Rector’s Forum in Jeffords Hall, at 10:15 a.m..

Episcopal Relief & Development (ER-D) Response to Hurricane Joaquin’s

Destruction in South Carolina

Joaquin has largely left the front page news, but the destruction left behind in Charleston, Columbia, and surrounding areas will be with South Carolinians for many months or years. That area suffered several fatalities, widespread flooding, massive destruction to residential and commercial properties, and to the area’s essential infrastructure. Widespread and total devastation in several areas. Bishop Wright has asked that churches in our diocese take up a special collection on October 11 or 18 earmarked for disaster relief in South Carolina. Please make your checks to ER-D, with memo entry “South Carolina Disaster Relief”, and either drop them in the collection plate or at the church office. We will consolidate and forward our contributions to: ER-D, P.O. Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058. Our diocesan point person for ER-D emphasizes that ER-D is in for the long haul: “Ten years later we are still working in New Orleans, three years later still in New Jersey after hurricane Sandy rebuilding and we will be in South Carolina as long as necessary.” Our Fr. Reginald Gunn recounts his 1994 experience in Americus, Georgia, when that area was hit by massive and destructive storms; Fr. Reg attests to the value that ER-D’s (then the Presiding Bishop’s Fund) financial support made to their recovery.

EPISCOPAL RELIEF & DEVELOPMENT

Canine Assistants visit to EpiscoPALS on Sunday, October 4.

PALS is our ministry for 4th and 5th graders, who meet twice

a month for fun and fellowship. Call Judy Hine for more

information at 770-993-1094, ext. 122.
