St . David’s Vestry

Nominations Begin

September 13 St. David’s has been very blessed with an abundance of God’s gifts provided by a loving parish. These precious gifts enable our community to continue to grow and spread the love of God not only in Roswell, but around the world. This is only possible through strong spiritual leadership, teamwork and clarity of vision.

The Vestry of St. David’s is the vehicle by which our parish achieves this vision. The twelve Vestry members are elected as parish leaders to work closely with the clergy and take an active role in fulfilling God’s plan for the church. Each year, our parish nominates 4 candidates to become members of the Vestry. This year, nominations begin on September 13 and close on September 20. This should allow all members of St. David’s the opportunity to vote for these very important vestry positions. The following are the requirements for serving on the vestry according to the Diocese of Atlanta Canons & Constitution, Canon 31, Section 6, (d).(1): “Those qualified for election to the office of Vestry Member shall be as follows:

Any confirmed communicant in good standing of the Parish who is not less than eighteen years of age,

a regular attendant at the services of the Church in the year preceding election,

and known by the treasurer to have made and fulfilled a stated financial commitment for church support.”

Other qualities the Vestry is looking for:

• Demonstrates generosity in time, talent and treasure

• Demonstrates strong leadership qualities (principled, comfortable voicing concerns, considerate of other’s opinions)

• Responsible, caring and willing to forgive Do you know someone who demonstrates these qualities? If so, please consider nominating him/her by submitting the name to a member of the clergy, the Vestryperson of the day, or you may email your choice of nominee by visiting www.stdavidchurch.org, clicking on Our Church and then Vestry, and choosing which member to send your email.

Vestry Nomination Forms will also be available at a designated table in the mailbox hallway before and after Sunday services and also in the church office during the week of Sept. 13.

For more information, please speak with any member of the Vestry or clergy.

NURSERY HELP NEEDED!

Greet ings from EpiscoTOTS!

A few of our adult nursery volunteers are stepping down from their faithful service in the infant and toddler rooms, so we find ourselves in need of 3 new adult caregivers to serve in those rooms once a month beginning this Fall. We need volunteers during the 9:00 a.m. service, during the Sunday School hour, and during the 11:15 a.m. service. We have many “lead” caregivers in these rooms with several years of service who are pros at training new volunteers and nurturing these little ones! This ministry is a wonderful way to share Christ’s love with our littlest St. Davidians, and to offer their parents an opportunity to worship in peace. Please contact Sarah McVay, Ass’t to the Rector for Infant and Toddler Care, at [email protected] or at 770-993-1094 x123 if you would like to be added to the nursery rotation schedule.

TrebleMakers Chi ldren’s Choirs Have Begun! by Susie Clements, Asst. for Children’s Music

Children and music go hand-in-hand, and worship and music go hand-in-hand. So what could be better than to put the two together to serve “God and church”! All children and youth in PreK through high school can be a part of St. David’s Music Ministry.

The three choirs that collectively make up Treble Makers are:

The RSCM program, or Royal School of Church Music, is the curriculum for excellent choral singing and liturgical interpre-tation sponsored by the Episcopal Church. The implementation of this methodology will be very kid-oriented and fun. The children will be involved in some very serious musical learning, they just won’t always realize it!

REHEARSALS HAVE BEGUN.. . Rehearsals for the Primary and Junior Choirs have begun We will continue our twice a week schedule on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. You only need to attend ONE rehearsal each week.

• Primary Choir – Sundays 2:30-3:15 pm OR Wednesdays 5:00-5:45 pm Junior Choir – Sundays 3:30-4:30 pm OR Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 pm. The Junior Choir will begin singing in church on September 13th.

The Cherub Choir will begin rehearsals when Sunday School begins on September 13th.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDIES

The Li fe of Moses—

“Turning Wanderers

into Worshipers” Come join Moses and the Hebrews as they begin the Exodus from Egypt and journey to the Promised Land. This fascinating story traces God’s people through their wilderness wanderings. Learn how God delivers them from bondage, covenants with them, and guides them into a fresh understanding of Himself. As we observe the leadership of Moses, Aaron, Joshua, and Caleb, we will realize God’s plan for His people—redemption and a special relationship with Him. Watch the incredible transformation as God turns complaining wanderers into reverent worshipers!

Beginning Sept. 10 Every Thursday morning 10:00 am—11:30 am Grace Parish Hall

“Voices of Fai th”: The Psalms Join us for a lively journey into the richness of the Psalms of the Old Testament! Please come every Wednesday morning beginning on September 9th, 11:00 a.m. – 12 noon in Grace Parish Hall for “Voices of Faith”: The Psalms. For additional information, please contact Anne Elizabeth at [email protected]. The Psalms reveal Israel’s passionate willingness to talk frankly with God using unflinching speech about the whole human range of experience: anger and pain, confession, gratitude, fear and hope. The Psalms reflect the voices of faith that have found God to be their rock and refuge, strength and joy. We will pray with the Psalms every week, look at key expressions of faith matters, and explore the reference of the Psalms that fill the gospel of Christ. 9/9 Check In/ Introductions/Why Do the Psalms Matter? 9/16 The ABC’s of the Psalms 9/23 The Voice of Order & Confidence 9/30 Psalms for Worship – Sue Wallace, guest speaker 10/7 The Voice of Lament 10/14 The Voice of Repentance 10/21 The Voice of a Rightful Mind 10/28 The Voice of Joy 11/4 The Voice of Trust 11/11 Voices for Prayers 11/18 Jesus and the Psalms 11/25 THANKSGIVING DAY WEEK – No Class 12/2 Advent: Praying the Rosary

STEWARDSHIP

www.stdavidchurch.org

“I know a guy. . .” Well, if I said that it might conjure an image of my Italian heritage and Northeast accent, but when a true Southern Belle so eloquently expressed it to her Yankee sister-in-law, it made her look at this young Southern Lady in an entirely new light. She was welcoming her husband’s family move to the South with a list of service providers from church to make their move as seamless as possible. Through her family’s commitment and involvement they have truly met so many fellow parishioners that have welcomed and embraced them that they engage other’s expertise whenever possible. St. David’s is such a strong support community, in so many ways, for so many of us that we probably take for granted all the resources that are available to serve so many of our various needs. The more intertwined our parish is, the more

like a trampoline mat we are to each other, allowing for us to leap higher while being ready to absorb us when needed. The role of the strong is to serve. A Christian community serves others, and that’s exactly what happens when you allow St. David’s to become your focus of your Stewardship. With so many ministries available here find some that you can serve to further God’s will amongst us all. ‘You can’t out give God.’ is an old expression that applies here. No matter what you give, God gives us so much more. I’m so blessed that St. David’s plays such a powerful role in my life; may it also be the source for you that you’re looking for. Family Ministry MeetingFamily Ministry MeetingFamily Ministry MeetingFamily Ministry Meeting by The Rev. Michelle Ortiz

September 9, 2015 Families come in all shapes and sizes. This season of life requires so much from us. Raising children is a great joy but it is also very demanding! As your priest, my hope is to provide you with opportunities to grow spiritually; to provide practical support and learning regarding the fun challenges of parenting, marriage, separation, and divorce; while providing opportunities for you to create and deepen meaningful friendships with others in the church. I have been praying about this and compiling ideas for months now but I really need to hear from you! In order to begin this conversation, I would like to invite you to come meet with me on Wednesday night, September

9th from 6:30-7:30 pm for a Family Ministry Meeting, so that we can have some time to get to know each other and begin to identify the wants and needs of those of us at St. David's raising children. Dinner is served from 5:30-6:15 and childcare is provided. It is very important to let us know about your childcare needs as we want to have the correct amount of caregivers on that night. Please sign up online and come ready to share:

Gifts and TalentsGifts and TalentsGifts and TalentsGifts and Talents St. David’s will be launching a program in Gifts and Talents beginning this fall. The goal is to teach spiritual disciplines that will enable individuals to clearly discover and embrace their passions and character traits, and then match those with some of the particular Christian spiritual gifts presented in the New Testament. With this knowledge, individual Christians will be prepared to embrace ministries that will be life-giving and nurturing for themselves as well as others. The program will first be presented in the Rector’s Forum on Sunday mornings at 10:15 a.m. The schedule is below. On September 27th, the weekend of our Women’s Retreat, the Rev. Katie Elberfeld will give a presentation of Servant Leadership, which will enhance understanding Gifts and Talents. A Saturday seminar, presenting the same material, will be offered on October 17th for people unable to attend the Sunday sessions.

St Francis: Not Just a Garden StatueSt Francis: Not Just a Garden StatueSt Francis: Not Just a Garden StatueSt Francis: Not Just a Garden Statue

Everyone has heard the story of St. Francis preaching to the birds, but have you heard the story of him returning all of his clothes to his father and running into the countryside naked? How about the cross from which Jesus instructed to him to “Fix my church?” Did you know that the Pope rejected him? Or that he brought peace to Assisi by arbitrating between the rich and the poor? How about the day he cast a demon into the abyss near his cave? His decision to preside over the Eucharist although he was not a priest? Or when he received the stigmata. Then there were his deathbed writings holding nothing back in his criticism of the church. And what about the woman (not St. Clare) who broke all the rules to be with him as he died?

For three Sundays this fall (Oct 25, Nov. 1, 8), Dr. April Love-Fordham, who spent St. Fran-cis’s feast day in Assisi in 2014 and the two weeks afterwards following in the last steps of St. Francis, will be telling the in-credible life stories of St. Francis at the Rector’s Forum.

Join us for a five week discussion group facilitated by Carolyn Powers based on David Brooks’ latest book The Road to Character. We will examine numerous biographical sketches from his book, and discuss how each person overcame issues and developed character on the way to his/her life’s mission as well as discussing that person’s contribution to society. We will also highlight some of the aspects of

character development and the meaning of humility in our culture. Diverse examples of people mentioned in the book include Frances Perkins, Dwight Eisenhower and his mother Ida, George Marshall, Philip Randolph, Augustine, and Johnny Unitas. Since the book will be used as our main reference, participants are encouraged to read it. We will meet in the St. Gabriel room at 10:15am, beginning on Sunday, October 25th.

Open Forum Class in the Bethany room (upstairs back hallway) beginning Sunday, October 25 at 10:15 a.m.

An Author among us! Our very own Rev. Katherine Elberfeld (Katie) is an author with a new book just out in May of this year!

Make Yourselves at Home: And Other Stories: What lurks beneath the surface of small-town propriety? These stories of small-town life in the Ameri-can South evoke a pleasant and polite community feeling, and some of them are blessed by strong family ties. But the stories, some comic, some dark, and some both comic and dark, all reveal secrets and re-sentments that fester in the past and haunt the present. In the tradition set by Southern writers Flannery O’Connor, Carson McCullers, and Eudora Welty, Katherine Elberfeld has invented eccentric characters who range from a little bit odd to downright crazy. She has another book that was published in 2013 - The Lady of the House: A Novel.

You can search for here name on Amazon.com and you’ll see other books that she has published.

NEW MEMBER RECEPTION

www.stdavidchurch.org

On Sunday, October 18, 2015, at 10:15 a.m.—11:00 a.m., during the Rector’s Forum, all are invited to join us as we “Welcome New Members to Fellowship and Faith” - an opportunity for new and “established” members of St. David’s to come together to enrich and grow our feeling of community and share our faith life. It’s a time to meet new members, make new friends (even if they’re not new members) and renew acquaintances with some we haven’t seen for a while! All Adult Sunday School classes have been re-scheduled in hopes that all will attend this reception!

This is also a wonderful tome to invite a friend to worship—a “golden” opportunity to introduce a friend or co-worker to our family of faith at St. David’s. We will gather in Jeffords Hall for coffee and light refreshments at 10:15 a.m. Please come—WEAR YOUR NAMETAGS. Our newest members have a blue ribbon attached to their nametags, so please make a special effort to greet and welcome them!

Hope to see you there!

The 2015 St. David's MINISTRY FAIR and Celebration will be Sunday, October 11, following the “Gifts & Talents” program. This is an opportunity for you as members of our parish to learn about the nearly 80 wonderful ministries we offer. Wander through and find a ministry in which you would like to be involved.

3rd Annual Parade! Plan to attend the 9:00 a.m. service on October 11 and watch our “Parade of Ministries” after the Peace.

The Ministry Fair will be held in Jeffords Fellowship Hall throughout the morning, following the 7:45 a.m. service until the beginning of the 11:15 a.m. service. Every St. David’s ministry will be invited to prepare a display to share the specifics of their ministry’s mission. Last year, the tables were particularly creative! The tables will have goodies and handouts.

Come Join us—you don’t want to miss it!
