Our Fall and Winter programmes are
well under way and things seem to be
falling into place. Our Mayor’s Veterans’
Appreciation Dinner at Golf Steak and
Seafood on the 14th of September was a
huge success as was the accompanying
silent auction. Our thanks go out to Ron
Beaudreau, Sarah Bach and their Team.
Well done!
Sunday, September 16th marked the 72nd
Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and
what a day it was! Beautiful sunny days
are a parade marshall’s dream and our
parade marshall’s dream came true. We
could not have had better weather. A
great contingent of marchers paraded
up King Street in Waterloo to meet
enthusiastic crowds lining the parade
route.
How could one not feel proud in seeing
and hearing both marchers and the
viewing crowds sing out “O Canada”
at the top of their voices. It was a very
stirring moment!
By the end of September we will have
seen a return of the Wing’s famous
Friday Lunches put on by the Ladies
Auxiliary. On September 30th, we will
have our Sunday breakfast back again.
The lunches are every Friday and the
breakfasts are on the last Sunday of
each month. If you haven’t tried these
fabulous meals in the past, make a point
of doing so right away.
Following the Battle of Britain parade
members of the FOCSIA group joined
us at the Wing and presented the Wing
with a beautiful memorial, plaque,
the Families of Canadian Soldiers
in Afghanistan with a place to meet
regularly over the past 5 years. The
memorial in our lounge was dedicated to
Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan.
We thank them for allowing us to be
their friends.
I want everyone to
know that our Ladies
Auxiliary came through
“Chili Cook-off Challenge”
held at the K-W Naval Association on
September 9th. Prized chili recipes
were brought out and 10 challengers
participated from the Waterloo legions.
Of the 5 prizes offered our ladies took
home 3. How’s that!
Be careful when you
throw out a challenge to
our ladies. Well done
Bev Rylott, Liz Maurer,
Terry Bruce, and Joan Fry. Perhaps our
members can come up with a challenge
that we can make to the other Service
organizations that would make a fun
event. Any Ideas?
404 K-W Wing Monthly Meeting will be held
Thursday, October 4th, 2012.
Dinner at 5:30 pm.
Meeting to start at 7:45 pm.

The Invisibles
The Bible reading this past
Sunday came from Mark 9.
This is where Jesus hears the
be the greatest among them.
You will remember that he then
takes a child and tells them that
whoever accepts (or embraces)
one of these children also
embraces me. One of the things
he probably meant by this is
that we are to accept those who
are powerless in society and,
therefore, usually invisible to
most others. We certainly notice
the rich and famous and we’re
quick to let our friends know
that we did indeed see them.
But Jesus is always noticing, and
shining the light upon those who
are not so popular and those
who are weak or sick or poor. It
is the marginal people who seem
to catch the attention of God.
Before the great “I Am” they are
very visible and are of special
concern.
I just read a story about a
Winnipeg bus driver who stopped
his vehicle to give his shoes to
a man who was barefoot on the
street. The Bible tells us that, in
fact, he gave his shoes to Jesus.
I wonder how many other people
even saw this shoeless soul. The
good news is, he was not invisible
to the bus driver who was moved
to do something; and everyone
on the bus was also moved by
the driver’s kind actions.
Then my friend Neal told me that
he was in the library and saw a
person who needed to copy his
resume to apply for a job but had
no money to pay for the machine.
It cost only sixty cents, but when
you have nothing it might as
well be a million dollars. Neal
normally carries no change at all
but on this evening he reached
into his pocket and found he
had a grand total of six dimes.
He handed this to the person
standing beside the demanding
photocopier who was then able
to get his copy and complete his
application for work. I suppose
we’ll never know if he got the job
but the point is he was noticed by
Neal who helped him get what he
needed.
Who is invisible to us? I suppose
we don’t know because we
don’t see them. I understand
the tiger beetle goes blind if it
runs too fast. That’s why it must
It must stop to get its bearings
and regain its sight and then go
again. I often wonder if we could
Would we also see more if we
stopped more often to get our
bearings? Would we also see
those who usually go through life
unseen?
Well, from bus drivers to beetles
perhaps we need to pause in our
speed-of-light lives and take a
look. Who knows, maybe there
are others who also want to see
us.
Wearing the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal Larry Allenson
The following came to us with thanks to
Mel Barrie, Kitchener Waterloo Naval
Association
Your medal can be worn at cer-
emonial events, such as those
held on Remembrance Day and
Canada Day.
As well, you may receive
invitations to other formal events
where the medal can be worn.
The invitation card will mention
“With Decorations.” It is always
appropriate to ask your host if
you are not sure whether your
medal should be worn.
When you wear your medal, it
should always be worn on your
left side, above your heart. If this
is your only medal, wear it as
you received it. If you have other
medals, we recommend having it
mounted professionally.
It should be suspended from a
medal bar together with the other
decorations, arranged from left
to right in accordance with the
Canadian order of precedence.

Wednesday Night Entertainment Larry Allenson
It’s hard to believe that it is the
middle of September. This means
rolling up our sleeves Ladies and
getting back to work.
On September 9th the Ladies
Auxiliary entered the Chili Cook
Off at the K W Navy Association,
and it sure was a fun day. Thanks
to Joan Fry we won 1st Prize for
Table Decoration. We also won
1st Prize for the People’s Award
as well as 2nd Prize for our
excellent Chili. All of these prizes
were donated back to the Wing
and will be drawn for at various
future functions.
September 16th we served and
provided the lunch for the Battle
of Britain.
I also attended the Mayor’s
Veterans’ Appreciation Dinner
at the Golf Steak House and in
my opinion this was the best yet.
Thanks to Ron for all your work.
November 11th, the Ladies will
be serving scalloped potatoes
and ham to all the good folks
who parade.
On September 19th, President
Harvey installed our executive for
this year.
I am sure we will have everyone’s
support for another successful
year.
Now, in closing, the Ladies are
serving good lunches every
Friday, 11:30 until 1:30. We are
looking forward to your continued
support. See you at the Wing.

Our 404 Wing

for several
years now.
Some veterans participate
and answers questions from
the youngsters. The Air Force
is showcased along with
the Legions, Navy and other
veterans’ organizations. Each
group hosts a display table
and volunteers interact with the
guests. Everyone participates in a
moving ceremony that is intended
to provide a “fundamental
understanding of who, what,
where, when and why we are
called upon to defend our freedom
and the democracy that we have
today”. Last year, over 2300
children attended. Your help is
needed Monday to Friday, Oct

Parade Marshall Report
Well, we got in another Battle of
Britain Commemorative Service
and Parade.
The weather was excellent, we
had a great group of participants
Cadets, all marching to the tunes
played by the Waterloo Regional
Police Band.
Bob Berg
The unfortunate power shortage
made it very hard for anyone to
hear the speakers. Apparently a
hydro hook up was scheduled for
this time and all area residents
no one lives at the cenotaph and
therefore who would notify who.
The Comradeship was great as
usual both at the Cenotaph and
at the 404 Wing
following the
ceremony.
The next get
together will be
the Remembrance
Day service.
