EASTERGrowing up I remember Christmas and Easter. Although I looked forward to both of them, I always considered Easter as being not as important as Christmas. For Christmas, after all, was about getting presents and we would wait all year long to the haul of toys that would be ours on that glorious day. I could never understand why the adults did not get as excited as the children about the gifts, but I figured they were just tired because they worked so hard. In any event, I never gave it too much thought and simply decided that I would never be like that in adulthood, should I decide to go that route.Easter was a bit different. After all, no tree, no presents, no building anticipation. We did, however, enjoy the search for the hidden eggs and competed to see who could find the most. But the Easter Bunny never did enjoy quite the same status as Santa and that was because all he delivered was eggs. While this was very generous I never met anyone who wrote a letter to the Easter Bunny.

As the years passed it turns out that I did become an adult, although I had thought I would have more of a choice about that. Day by day it just sort of happened. As changes occurred both physically and mentally so too did my perspectives regarding these two celebrations. I still greatly enjoy Christmas but no longer for the wrapped gifts under the tree. I still like receiving them, to be sure, but my appreciation for the season now extends beyond my “take” on that great morning. Today that entire season is about my community of friends and family and gatherings and joy. Easter is a bit different. It still does not have the same communal intensity of Christmas but there is, I find, a deep personal impact. Put simply, it gives me pause. Of course, as a Christian minister, I am mindful of resurrection and new life and all of the services of Holy Week as the faithful gather to rejoice. But, moving inward, I know that there is something more. And this something more comes in the form of questions such as Who am I? What about death...my death? What does new life really mean for me?. And I

realize that these are questions that I would ask myself even if I wasn’t a person of faith. So, here is the part that I cannot fully express. Words are inadequate at this level and yet we are compelled to use them. So let me pose these mysteries in the form of a few more questions. What if the same creative energy that created the universe flows also through us?And, if so, how is it to be used? How does this affect our relations with others, with money, with all that we do?Does it make for peace?Does it make for joy?Does it make for rising life? So, while I no longer look for eggs on Easter, there is a deeper searching that compels me. And, even with our many different understandings of God and expressions of faith, can we still proclaim with our own understandings:Christ is risen! He is risen indeed

JOKE FOR THE MONTH

Thirty minutes on an outbound evening Air Lingus flight from Dublin, the lead flight attendant for the cabin crew in her lovely Irish brogue nervously made the following painful announcement..:"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm so very sorry but it appears that there has been a terrible mix-up -- one minute prior to take-off by our airport catering service...I don't know how this has happened but we have 103 passengers on board and, unfortunately, only 40 dinner meals...I truly apologize for this mistake and inconvenience."When passengers' muttering had died down, she continued. "Anyone who is kind enough to give up their meal so that someone else can eat will receive free, unlimited drinks for the duration of our 5 hour flight."Her next announcement came four hours later... "If anyone would like to change their minds, we still have 40 dinners available." GOD BLESSES THE IRISH!
