It’s the end of February and this month has been a busy one. Our Valentine Dinner was a huge success. The meal was outstanding, followed by great entertainment, and all of this witnessed by a crowd occuping every available chair in the lounge. Another success for our entertainment committee! On February 20th we held our Annual Ladies Auxiliary Appreciation Dinner where the men of the Wing prepared and served dinner to the ladies who each and every year do so much for the members of the Wing. This year was different. This year the ladies said “Let’s have a luncheon rather than an evening dinner.” And so was born the Ladies Auxiliary Appreciation Luncheon and the response was excellent! Past presidents Sid Kenmir, Garry Kuehl and Vic Snowden all turned out in their greys and blues with bow

ties, cummerbunds, and white gloves served the meal, poured wine, and cleared dishes, while Mike Turos, Peter Sumlick, Bob Berg, and Harv Fry stayed in the kitchen cooking and washing dishes. It was great Ladies and we appreciate you. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the work going on at this time around the Wing paid for by the ladies. On your next trip to the Wing, look around at the new decor and new fixtures. It’s a work in progress and we thank the Ladies for their generosity. For those of you who are looking for a Saturday afternoon of fun, we are introducing Saturday Games between 2:00 and 4:00pm. Dr. Bruce StreetPADRE’S CORNER

Greetings in this time of Lent. The following is an excerpt from Wikipedia.Lent is a solemn observance in the liturgical year of many Christian denominations, lasting for a period of approximately six weeks leading up to Easter. In most Western denominations Lent is taken to run from Ash Wednesday to Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) or to Easter Eve. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer—through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday, which then culminates in the celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.During Lent, many of the faithful commit to fasting or giving up certain types of luxuries as a form of penitence. The Stations of the Cross, a devotional commemoration of Christ's carrying the Cross and of his execution, are often observed. Many Roman Catholic and some Protestant churches devoid their altars of candles, flowers, and other devotional offerings, while Crucifixes, religious statues, and other

elaborate religious paraphernalia are often veiled in violet fabrics in solemn observance of this event. In certain pious Catholic countries, grand processions and cultural customs are observed, and the faithful attempt to visit seven churches during Holy Week in honor of Jesus Christ heading to Mount Calvary. Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days, in commemoration of the forty days which, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, where he endured temptation by Satan. However, different Christian denominations calculate the "forty days" of Lent differently. In most Western traditions the Sundays are not counted as part of Lent; thus the period from Ash Wednesday until Easter consists of 40 days when the Sundays are excluded. However in the Roman Catholic Church Lent is now taken to end on Holy Thursday rather than Easter Eve, and hence lasts 38 days excluding Sundays, or 44 days in total. This event, along with its pious customs are observed by Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Anglicans, as well as some Baptists and Mennonites.

But for me, and for many, Lent is a journey. It is a time to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. It is a journey that leads to the ultimate act of love so deep that one lays down his life for others. Well, I have to ask how these words actually take on flesh and blood in my life? What blocks my journey? What prevents me from seeing the sacred in life and the beauty of other people? There is a quote from Richard Rohr that I found helpful: “Is there at least one place in your life where you are giving and receiving love? If it happens in one place, it can happen everywhere. If you are truly capable of loving one person, you’re capable of loving more than one, and eventually even your enemy, and finally all. Love is one piece. Thus, we rightly speak of being “in love” and Paul speaks of being “in Christ.” Love is all or nothing. you either express love or you don’t. The Scholastic philosopher, Josef Pieper, said it very well, “the proper habitat for truth is human relationship.” How we relate to anyone is how we relate to everything else, too.”So, as we move through Lent and toward Easter God gives us strength for the journey.
