Please welcome and support Kitty Tsang, our new editor, who is taking this on for 2016.

Thanks to all the coordinators and volunteers for games and sports activities and for continuing to take leadership roles in making the Wing a warm and welcoming place to be. Thanks to the Christmas dinner crew for creating a delicious evening of food and entertainment. Kudos to Allison Arnold and Gina Arnold for running a successful Grey Cup party on Nov 29th with proceeds going towards our new large screen television; they are planning to hold more events and fundraise for the TV; they’ve gotten off to a great start for the Membership Revitalization Committee. On the way home from a holiday the airline passenger asked, “Why is the mistletoe hanging over the baggage counter?” The clerk replied, “It’s so you can kiss your luggage goodbye.”

It was mealtime during our trip on a small airline in the South. “Would you like dinner?” the flight attendant asked the man seated in front of me. “What are my choices?” he asked. “Yes or no,” she replied.

What does “making people welcome” mean? How does one create an environment in which new people feel welcomed and wanted?

Events are often attended by people who come hoping to make friends and meet like-minded folks. The first impression is the most important. One idea – it helps a lot to have activities for people to do something instead of just talking. Here are

some other ideas . . .

include visitors in conversations

reach out, greet them, introduce yourself to them and to others

offer a tour so they know where to find the restroom, the smoking area or where their coats are being stored

don’t try to force people into social interaction

take time to listen

A smile goes a long way

Happy New Year and all the best to everyone in 2016. Thanks to all the men who served our Christmas lunch and to Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus for making our day special. Looking ahead, please reserve Feb 17th for the annual luncheon prepared and served by the Wing’s Past Presidents and Executive.

To our dear friends at the 404. I have always called the Wing my second home. Thanks so very much for all your prayers, phone calls, cards and food, as well as coming in and looking after me to give Fred a break. Just Us Jamming with their visit really got me on the road to recovery. Love you.

The Air Cadet League of Canada is now in celebration of their 75th anniversary year. A commemorative pin was created for cadets to wear on the tunic pocket of their uniform from 1 Sept 2015 to 31 Dec 2016. The Ontario Provincial Committee is reaching out to partners to support and contribute to this great worthwhile cause; a primary fund raiser is their annual lottery ticket sales. In 1941, the Air Cadet League of Canada was officially incorporated as a voluntary organization with the mandate of working in partnership with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Since then, close to one million young Canadians have participated in the training program that emphasizes leadership; it is geared to youth between the ages of 12 and 18. Successful Air Cadets have graduated and moved on to take leadership roles in many fields of business and across society. General Rick Hillier, former Chief of Defense for the Canadian Forces, said the, “... Leagues of Canada are probably our best Canadian programs for producing responsible Canadian citizens …”One of the annual Air Cadet League awards is the Irvin Erb Award of $1,000 for pilot training achievement presented to a top cadet in Canada. Irvin Erb, from Kitchener, served in the Royal Flying Corps in WWI, was a member of the 404 K-W Wing and an ardent sponsor of the Air Cadet movement since inception.
