We rang in 2016 in style with not one, but two New Year parties. Keith & Carol Norris were great coordinators for New Year’s eve and the jamming group did a super job; thanks also to Ron Andraza for spinning out the evening till midnight with karaoke. The levée on January 1st was popular too. It’s great to see everyone enjoying themselves and having a good time. We hope to see many of you back at upcoming events including the Winter Feast and the Valentines and Irish get-togethers. The 404 K-W Wing is the recipient of the Best Newsletter award from our national, RCAF Association. Trish Walker, our Wing Ding producer and Larry Allenson, our recent editor, accepted this beautiful plaque on behalf of our Wing at the January General Meeting. Great job!A number of Wing members attended the January 17th official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of RCL #530’s new building on Marsland Drive in Waterloo. They expressed thanks to the 404 Wing and many others for the

support received during their move and renovations. The RCAF Association is considering an update of our RCAFA motto. The Association wants to determine “how our crest could or should be modified” so it will resonate “with more people, from all air force generations.” Three mottos are proposed and Regular Members are asked to vote on their preference either to the Wing or directly to the Association. A copy of the correspondence is posted at the Wing and will be reviewed at our February General Meeting. The proposed mottos are:A Per Ardua Ad Astra (Through Adversity to the Stars)B Ad Astra Sic Itur * Per Ardua (To the Stars such is the way through adversity)C Sic Itur Ad Astra (Such is the Way to the Stars). This year, the Annual General Meeting for Ontario Group RCAFA will be held in Western Region and is hosted by our sister Wing in London, May 20-22.

404 WING POPPY REPORT FOR 2015

Harvey "GIB" Newman, aged 90, passed away Dec. 23, 2015Second world war veteran of the R.C.A.F.

Member of the 404 K-W. Wing, R.C.A.F.A. 1975 - 2015

Aline McCubbin, aged 85, passed away Dec. 13, 2015Member of the 404 K-W Wing, R.C.A.F.A. 2006 - June 2015

And member of the Ladies Auxiliary, 2002 - 2015

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,we will remember them.

Sid Kenmir - 404 Wing Poppy Chairman

The 404 Wing had the second best Poppy Campaign in history. The total for 2015 was $13,030.57 compared to $16,823.51 last year. A Saturday afternoon group at the Wing topped up the pot with a few extra loonies to give us over $13,000 – thanks!Wing members did a super job of tagging this year at Conestoga Mall Food Court & Zehrs store in the Conestoga Mall and some at Sobeys Store at Northfield Drive & Weber Street North with

most of the money coming in on week-ends. These members gave up their valuable time and went out tagging at least once, most went out two, three or even four times: Tom & Brenda Stamp, Doug Arnold, Anna May Trapp, Gina Arnold, Ada Monaghan, Terry Bruce, Nancy Ellis, Vic Snowden, Garry & Donna Kuehl, Peter Sumlick, Harvey Fry, Howard Dessler, Ernie Dyck, Wilf Dippel, Ron Beaudreau and Dick Trussler. Let me know if I forgot anyone.

We had a few taggers that were not members such as Jim Playford, David Playford, my wife Marlene, Sandra Gordon and Ron Beaudreau’s two grandchildren. If we had more volunteers we could do more at the Sobeys Store. We had 12 counter top Poppy boxes out in various locations which proved to bring in some serious dollars. Let me know if you would like a counter-top Poppy box to place in a store of some kind. Thanks to all of you once again,

AIR FORCE NEWS Donna Kuehl

Every month the Wing receives “Recent News” items from Ontario Group or from our RCAFA National office. These are usually excerpts from newspapers or government media releases that relate to Canada’s military and specifically the Air Force. You can request to be on this mailing list. Some headlines from recent news stories and editorials include:- RCAF has almost 60 personnel trained on Cyclone maritime helicopters - Election and turnover at National Defence hamper military purchasing plans - Canada's military needs better focus and funding: Editorial- Long lost Avro Anson discovered after 71 years- Belleville drone vs. vehicle crash 'probably won't be the last': police Drones are becoming more popular and affordable. Transport Canada, which regulates recreational drone use, recommends flying drones at least nine kilometres away from airports, no higher than 90 metres above the ground and at least 150 metres away from people, buildings and vehicles. During her annual physical exam, the doctor asks the retired woman about her level of physical activity. The woman said she spent three days a week, every week, in the outdoors.“Yesterday afternoon was typical; I took a five-hour walk about seven miles through some pretty rough terrain. I waded along the edge of a lake. I pushed my way through two miles of brambles. I got sand in my shoes and dust in my eyes. I barely avoided stepping on a snake. I climbed several rocky hills. I had to pee behind some big trees. I had to avoid a mother bear. And all afternoon long, I was swatting away a swarm of wasps and scratching the mosquito bites that covered every inch of exposed skin.”It was stressful and hard work,” she sighed. “But, at the end of it all, I sat down with my friends, had a couple of glasses of wine, and considered it a good day.”Amazed by the story, the doctor said, “You have an incredible passion for the great outdoors!”“Not really,” the woman replied. “I’m just a very, very bad golfer.”
