Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ: Once again, we are faced with a season of terrible devastation wrought by storms around our country. Specifically, Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael are two major storms so far this year which have caused millions of dollars’ worth of damage to those living in the southeastern states. Many have lost homes, businesses or places of worship as a result of the storm winds, debris, torrential rain and catastrophic flooding. We offer our prayers to families who have lost loved ones or are among those injured. As so often occurs, the poorest communi-ties are hit hardest by these conditions, and will have the least recourse to address their losses. As a result, the bishops of the United States have agreed to take up a special collection for the humanitarian, long-term recovery and Church needs arising from the storms and other natural disasters in 2018. The funds collected in this special appeal for the 2018 Disasters will be used to support the efforts of Catholic Charities USA and Catholic Relief Services, the official relief agencies of the U.S. Catholic Church at home and abroad. These funds will allow their local agencies to respond to immediate emergency needs for food, water, shelter and medical care in these communities, and aid in long-term rebuilding and recovery efforts. Specifically, these contributions will be focused in response to Hurricane Florence, Hur-ricane Michael and other disasters during this year. I thank you all for your generosity and prayers.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet

Diocese of Joliet Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet

Next weekend, November 3rd and 4th, we will have a second collection for those affected by the recent hurricanes. Envelopes can be found in both the Church and the Holy Family Chapel. Please make checks

payable to Saints Peter and Paul. The Parish Office will also have envelopes available to you. Thank you for your generosity.

Dear Lord, We pray for those who have been devastated by recent natural disasters. We ask your blessing on all those whose lives are forever changed by grief and loss. Bring them comfort and strength. Bless the work of those providing emergency assistance. Help us to respond with generosity in prayer, in assistance, and in aid to the best of our abilities. Keep our hearts focused on the needs of those affected, even after the crisis is over. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

“Recapturing Our Childhood

Christmas Joy”

Veterans Day Mass and Reception In appreciation for their service and sacrifice, the students and staff of SS Peter and Paul parish school cordially invite veterans of our parish to celebrate Mass with us on Friday, Nov. 9th, at 8:00am. Following the Mass, there will be a reception for our veterans in the Ministry Center Social Hall. Please RSVP by Monday, Nov. 5th, by sending an email to: [email protected].

Book of the Deceased Beginning November 1st until the end of the month, we remember in a special way and pray for all those who have died, especially among our friends and family. Located near the Pieta statue at the back of the church will be a register where you are welcome to write the names of your deceased friends and fami-ly. We will include a special petition at all of our Masses during the month of November for those whose names are listed in this book.

Please note: First Friday Mass for November 2nd at 12:00pm will take place in the Holy Family Chapel, not the St. Francis Adoration Chapel. According to the words of Christ through His ap-paritions to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, there are several promises to those that practice the First Friday Devotions: “In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Friday, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeas-ure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.”

Music is an important part of the education at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School. At Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School, music is incorporated into the curricu-lum. The school has a dedicated classroom where music teacher, Mr. Steve Chalupnik, regularly meets with stu-dents beginning in kindergarten. Over the years, the pro-gram incorporates singing, learning to read music, music appreciation and music history. “Saints Peter and Paul School recognizes that teaching Fine Arts is not only an important component of a balanced curriculum, but partic-ipation in the Arts benefits academic achievement of stu-dents in other subject areas,” notes Mr. Chalupnik. Mr. Chalupnik is the principal double bassist with the internationally acclaimed West Suburban Symphony Or-chestra. Each fall, our third grade students participate in a field trip where they are able to see Mr. Chalupnik per-form with the orchestra (see photo). Also available to our students are opportunities to sing in choirs, play in the band and to participate in musicals.

People are not looking for leaders who can solve all their problems or answer all their questions. Often they know the answers already or they know their problem has no imme-diate solution. More than anything else people look to us, who minister to them for our presence of loving, caring and forgiv-ing others. They want our help in their efforts to handle pain and frustration. They look to us for understanding; they seek a sensitive and consoling response to their hurt feelings; they need the spiritual comfort we can bring through our ministry. They want someone who will pray with them, whose presence will remind them that no matter what their difficulties might be, God really loves and cares for them. They want assur-ance that God will never abandon them. This is the leader-ship that we are called to live. (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p. 310 -quoting Cardinal Bernadin)

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint

Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by

offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder,

Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need

of assistance? If so, call: 630-718-2127.

There’s still time to sign up for the DuPage Habitat for Humanity Build Day on Saturday, November 3rd. No previous construction experience is necessary to volun-teer. On the day of the build, please meet at the Knights of Columbus Council Hall in Naperville at 7:00am. You will return around 4:15pm. If you are interested in joining your Knights of Colum-bus Council for the day, contact Rodger Guebert at [email protected] or 630-877-0770.

Mark’s Gospel Corner

For more information about Mark’s Gospel Corner, email [email protected]

Today’s Gospel from Mark 10:46-52, the healing of the blind man of Jericho, concludes the second phase of Mark's Gospel. In the irst phase, Jesus travels throughout Galilee announcing that the Kingdom of God is at hand, healing the sick, and expelling demons. In the second phase, Jesus takes His disciples aside on the way to Jerusalem, "to a deserted place" or "into a house" to privately instruct them about His impending death and what this means about discipleship. The second phase begins and ends with the healing of a blind man, the irst in Mark 8:22 and the last in Mark 10:52. These two healing miracles are intended to shed light on the greater miracle that Jesus is performing within this section – the heal- ing of His disciples’ spiritual blindness. While Jesus is leaving Jericho, the blind man Bartimaeus calls out to Him: "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” This is the irst place in Mark’s Gospel where Jesus is referred to by this messianic title. Now, as Jesus travels to Jerusalem, where He will suffer His passion and death, Jesus’ true identity can be slowly revealed. The crowd tries to silence the blind man, but he cries out all the more. The fact that Jesus is simply passing through Jericho heightens Bartimaeus’ desperation. This blind, helpless beggar, sustained by only the few alms thrown to him by passersby, is not going to allow his one hope for healing to get past him.1 His efforts are rewarded when Jesus stops and calls out to Him. The crowd tells him, "The teacher is calling you.” Abandon-ing the little he has, he approaches Jesus full of con idence. Healed of his blindness, the man follows Jesus on the way to Jerusalem. Mark recounts this story because this man embodies what it means to be a disciple. Fully aware of his need and utter de-pendence, the blind man calls out to the Son of David, the Messiah: “Have mercy on me!” It is the cry of every disciple. He is not held back by the rebuke of the crowd or hindered by his possessions (in contrast to the man with many possessions earlier in the Gospel), but cries out all the more. Though fully aware of the man’s need, Jesus asks him, “What do you want?” Unlike the Apostles James and John, who asked for glory and power at Jesus’ right hand, Bartimaeus simply asks to see again. “Lord, I have lost my way; help me to see where I am to go.” Again, his unspoken prayer is the prayer of each one of us who recognize that we are lost and cannot ind our way. Once healed, Jesus tells him that he is free to go. How does he use his newly gained sight and freedom? The man recognizes that the only appropriate response to God’s generosity is to immediately follow Jesus on the way to Jerusalem. Mark tells his readers that wherever the Master goes, His servant will follow, even to His passion and death. This is what it means to be a disciple and why this account is remembered in the Gospels and paraphrased in the Mass: “Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy.” Notice the ickleness or shift in the crowd’s reaction. Initially they rebuke the blind man for calling out to Jesus, yet once Jesus stops and calls the man, they urge him to go to Him. There is a message here. First, notice how an authoritative igure speaking on behalf of the poor and downtrodden can change the attitude and response of the multitude. Just as Jesus has done in Mark’s Gospel, Pope Francis is doing in our own times. Just as hatred and neglect is infectious, love and attentive-ness can be spread through the actions of one person willing to speak out and act. 2 Secondly, the shift in the crowd from evil to good will lip- lop later in the Gospel when the same crowd that triumphantly welcomed Jesus with palms into Jerusalem will call out for His death on Good Friday. The passage is reminiscent of Peter, who at one moment recognizes Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and in the next becomes the mouthpiece of Satan: “Behind me Satan, you are not thinking like God but like man” (Mark 8:27-33).3 Fortunately, Jesus does not abandon Peter, nor does He abandon the crowd. Peter will continue to stumble, even denounc-ing that he knows Jesus, but he does not despair. Peter places his trust in the Savior who “raises Him up” on the shores of Galilee after the Resurrection in John 21:15. Finally, in the Acts of the Apostles, after the descent of the Holy Spirit on Pente-cost, Peter will preach to the crowd gathered in Jerusalem, converting three thousand in a single day (Acts 2:14-41). No matter how often we stumble, no matter how often we fall, no matter how often we turn aside, we are called to get back up and follow Jesus, who does not abandon us because of our weakness or our failure to see, on the way. 1Joel Marcus, The Anchor Yale Bible, Volume 27A, Mark 8-16, pp. 757-766 2Ibid, p. 754 3Ibid, p. 754
