Born in 1901 in Turin, Italy into a family of wealth and status, Pier Giorgio enjoyed good friends, hiking and skiing, museums and music, and was involved in political action. He found that deep prayer, service to the poor, and a passion for bringing others to Christ led to a life of purpose, peace, and happiness. Pier Giorgio died at the age of 24 on July 4, 1925. He was beatified on May 20, 1990 by Pope John Paul II who referred to him as a "man of the beati-tudes". Saint Vincent de Paul

Vincen ans help with the immediate need for food, rent or shelter, u lity bills, furniture, clothing, and medical care. Vincen ans also think about the systemic needs, the underlying root cause of a person’s problems: language problems, job skills deficit, low self-esteem, not knowing how to run a household, lack of skills in caring for children, drug and alcohol addic ons. Indeed, Vincen ans embrace both systemic and immediate needs as part of their minis-try and that humbles and inspires us to discernment and prayer. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organiza on, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradi on of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, please call 630-718-2127.

Mark’s Gospel Corner

For more information about Mark’s Gospel Corner, email [email protected]

Today’s Gospel is taken from Mark: 5:21-43. Jesus has crossed back from the opposite side of the lake, returning to His own, having taken His message to the Gentiles. Immediately, Jesus is approached by Jairus, a prominent Jewish leader, who beseeches Him to cure his gravely-ill twelve- year-old daughter. Jairus pays no heed to the inevitable backlash he will face from the Sanhedrin for approaching Jesus and seeking His help. Interestingly, Mark interrupts this account with the healing of a woman who has suffered a hemor- rhage for twelve years whom Jesus refers to as “daughter.” Her misery seems to have begun about the same time Jairus’ daughter was born (possibly a suggestion that the woman’s ailment was the result of childbirth). Mark has combined, or sandwiched, the two stories together as one story so that they shed light on each other, and more importantly, shed light on Jesus. Jairus is described as a wealthy family man who holds a place of prestige in society. In contrast, the nameless woman who reaches out to touch Jesus’ cloak has spent all she has on doctors who have worsened her condition, and as pre-scribed in Leviticus, have rendered her ritually unclean and ostracized from society. The crowd pressing in on Jesus provides the cover for her to approach Him. She boldly decides to risk the ridicule of the crowd to touch Jesus’ clothing, despite knowing that by touching Him she will render Him unclean. In reality, Jesus is not rendered unclean; rather, she is cleansed and made whole.1 Jesus is not satisfied with healing her physically; He earnestly seeks her out, despite the obstacles, to tell her, “Daughter, your faith has cured you.” The Greek word for cured is best translated as “saved.” Mark wants to emphasize that the more important cure takes place when Jesus approaches her and saves her. The cure of the woman, delaying Jesus’ arrival at Jairus’ home, reminds us of Jesus’ delay in going to Lazarus and Martha’s exclamation, “Jesus, had you been here my brother would not have died.” In the delay, Jarius’ daughter had died. Jesus tells Jarius in the face of this tremendous tragedy, seemingly caused by His delay, to have faith. Jesus re-bukes those wailing her death, who claim it is too late to do anything for the girl. It is precisely because she has died, that Jesus can perform the greater miracle. Jesus says, “She is asleep,” the same term He uses to describe Lazarus. In that instance, He had to explain to His disciples that He meant that Lazarus was dead. In this context, “sleep” has the same meaning as the phrase “rest in peace” does today. Jesus commands the girl to “rise up,” after which He tells them give her something to eat. The same verb used for “rise up” here is used to refer to Jesus’ resurrection, after which Jesus, too, asks His disciples for something to eat. Eating is intended to confirm Jesus’ actual bodily resurrection. The healing of Jarius’ daughter is a foreshadowing of His own rising and is intended to prepare the disciples for it. Mark wants to stress that those touched by Jesus and who follow His commands will live, that He has dispelled misery and death, now and forever. Mark wants to point out that the daughter of privilege and the orphaned daughter of Israel are equal in Jesus’ eyes, that the healing of one does not deprive the other. Most importantly, Mark wants to underscore that although the kingdom of God is at hand, the miracle of everlasting life is only fully realized after death. Mark recounts these miracles following Jesus’ return from the Gentile region at a time in the infant Church when to speak boldly about Christ could result in ridicule, mockery, persecution, and possibly death. Like the woman healed from her misery, Mark’s community is tempted to remain anonymous in a world ambivalent or even hostile to Christ. While Jarius and his family are amazed at the wonders God has worked through Jesus, the temptation to keep the mira-cle a private affair is significant since publically acknowledging Jesus could jeopardize their place in society. Yet, Jesus commands all who wish to follow Him “Go out to all the world and proclaim the Good News,” even in a world none too anxious to hear a message which conflicts with a secular worldview. Like the woman in today’s Gospel, we are called to “tell the whole truth.” If we keep it private, “just between God and me,” as Jarius and the woman in today’s Gospel were tempted to do, we disregard Jesus’ command and fail in charity toward our neighbors who may be longing for the “Good News.” 1Joel Marcus, The Anchor Yale Bible, Mark 1-8, pp. 354-373

Pray With Us

St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles

Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin.

Monday 9am Thursday 8am Monday 10am Friday 10am Monday 1pm Friday 12pm Wednesday 3am Saturday 10pm Wednesday 6pm

Please consider visiting with our Lord at these times. Call Barb at 630-885-1726 or [email protected].

COME AND ADORE HIM IN THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT...

Visit our Saint Francis Adoration Chapel - Open 24/7

Sit quietly and just “be” in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you.

EVENING PRAYER AND BENEDICTION

Please join us for Evening Prayer (Vespers) and

Benediction, held every Thursday at 6:00pm in

the St. Francis Adoration Chapel.

Rosary

Come pray with us on Tuesday evenings in the Church beginning at 7:30pm.

With our Rosaries, we will ask Our Lady to intercede for our Holy Father’s special intention of the month, as well as for our own intentions, and for world peace without the threat of terrorism. If there is a special intention that you would like to have remembered during the weekly Rosary, please email [email protected] or come to the Tuesday Rosary to add your intention.

Legion of Mary at Saints Peter & Paul

You are invited to join us in praying the rosary and devo-tional prayers in the spirit of faith and in union with the Blessed Virgin Mary. Meetings are Tuesdays at 6:00pm in the Ministry Center.

Contact Judy Vissepo at 630-245-3171 or Paulette Shea at 630-718-2127.

Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week
