Student Highlights
On September 16th, the Science Department
started a seminar series on current topics in
science. The seminars are open to all students,
faculty, and staff who want to attend to discuss
the research and how it applies to our lives and
to the classes offered here at York Tech.
The first discussion was on “How Tabloids are
Ruining the Understanding of Science” where we
discussed a current article. We looked at how the
science was taken out of context to make
headlines, not to actually tell the truth about the
research.
Students and faculty discussed how we need to work as scientists and an informed public to
correct some of these errors in the future.
We are meeting again October 14th at 1 pm in room ST209 with Mr. Jose Cardoza, Physics Instruc-
tor, leading a discussion on “What’s so special about Special Relativity?” You are invited to come and
join in the discussion. Please self-register in D2L for “Science Seminar” where you will also find the
reading materials. If you would like more information about the seminar series, please contact Mr.
Baker at [email protected].
Mr. Jordan Baker’s BIO206 lab is experiencing hands-on
ecological learning in class this semester. During their
dendrology lab they utilized dichotomous keys, tree field
guides, field lenses, binoculars, and a GPS unit to identify
and map trees around campus this week. “Although it’s hot
outside, these are the conditions many field biologists face
when they are completing experiments. So it is great to give
our students the ability to get the hands-on practical learning
that they can use in the field,” said Mr. Baker. Below you will
find a copy of the campus map that the students created
using Google Earth. If you would like the GPS coordinates or
more information about the class, please email Mr. Baker at

Tuesday, September 27, 2016. This event was
co-sponsored by the YTC Fitness Club and led
by advisor Justin Pichey. Members of the Fit-
ness Club and other students joined forces to

Dignity + Respect = Inclusion
JOIN US FOR THE PARTY REGISTRATION REQUIRED
Our College is filled with dimensions of diversity that create a
mosaic of values, beliefs and culturally based perceptions.
Whether intentionally or not, most of us view others through a
cloudy set of lenses based on biases and prejudices. To fully
enjoy the beauty of our campus community, we must all begin
to explore the world of others; we must realize that various
belief systems and standards provide avenues for thought-
provoking and enriching experiences.
The willingness to approach new ideas or to acknowledge
differences will bridge the gap to acceptance and inclusion.
Candid, open dialogue is one of the first and extremely
important steps in making this celebration of diversity a
reality. So, we have planned a “party” to start the crucial
conversation. You will get the chance to meet your peers, in a
fun-filled celebration!
Come and enjoy this interactive experience as we engage in
role playing, self-assessment and true reflection of how we
live, learn, work and play in our community.
Registration link is located on the front page.
