Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you where ever you go.” Joshua 1:9

The two votes have been taken (177-5 & 145-1) and just this morning, we requested synodical approval to terminate our membership in the ELCA. While we are waiting for that approval, St. Peter as a congregation and I as a pastor will seek membership

in the North American Lutheran Church.

What does this mean for St. Peter Lutheran Church? First of all, it means that faith, grace and scripture will continue to be our guiding principals. Second, that I will continue to be your pastor. Third, that St. Peter will continue to be inspired by the Holy Spirit to be the people of God in this place. Fourth, you will see a change in the symbol on our

signs. Fifth, we have to make changes in our constitution. These examples show that some things will change while others will not.

Remember, no matter what changes come our way that God is with us where ever we go.Check out our new national

church at thenalc.org.

Our New National Church The NALC was constituted on August 27, 2010, in Columbus, Ohio, at a convocation organized by the church reform movement Lutheran CORE. The constituting convocation was attended by nearly 1,000 members and visitors from across North America. A number of other church bodies sent leaders to greet the convocation. The Rev. Paul E. Spring was installed as the first Bishop of the NALC and served for one year.

The NALC has been blessed with extraordinarily rapid growth. At the time of the constituting convocation in August 2010, 17 congregations had voted to join the NALC. One year later, that number had grown to more than 250 congregations. Of those, roughly 35 were mission congregations, reflecting the priority placed on missions and evangelism by the NALC.

The NALC is Christ-Centered, Mission-Driven, Traditionally-Grounded and Congregationally-Focused. Our new Bishop is the Rev. John F. Bradosky; the General Secretary, Rev. Mark C. Chavez; the Mission Director, Rev. Gemechis Buba; the Treasurer, Mr. Ryan Schwarz; with the Rev. Ralph Kempski serving as our Regional Dean. The church is led by an Executive Council made up of an equal number of ordained clergy and lay people.

Operation Christmas Child

It’s that time of year again! Time to pack shoeboxes for little children around the world. Last year we took 147 shoeboxes to the Charlotte Processing Center for distribution. Let’s do it again! Please check out the table in the Fellowship Hall for your brochures, pick up a box and get started. There are 54 stuffed animals and 36 packs of silly bands donated by the Newberry Food Lion. If you need something to get you started, why not start with one of these. Children of all ages love something to snuggle with, especially if they have been traumatized by war or a natural disaster. Remember it is not what we do with these boxes, but what God can do with them. It’s “The Power of a Simple Gift.” If you have any questions, you can reach me on my cell phone 803-331-5935. Thanks again for supporting Operation Christmas Child. May God bless each and everyone.

A Closer Relationship With God

A few months ago when I was visiting my mother I took a seashell that she had brought from a trip 36 years ago and I put it close to my ears. I was surprised I could hear the nice sound of the sea waves exactly as I heard years ago in that same seashell! I wondered how a seashell could capture the ocean sound and keep it for so many years! I guess that the seashell stayed so long in the sea that it learned the ocean language through the years and kept it forever. I think it happens the same with our relationship with God. The more we stay close to Him, the more our spiritual ears will be sensitive to capture and keep His Holy language.

Life is so full of commitments that our most intimate relationship with God decreases as a result of us spending most of the time on trivial things that will not influence or lead us to eternity, where we should invest or put all our attention. I am not talking about our work in the deed for God, but that moment mentioned in Matthew 6:6 “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father…” that means “In your most secret place”. This verse is talking about that unique moment of profound intimacy where our spirit is connected to the Holy Spirit through a simple praying, where we leave ourselves to be embraced by the Lord and we talk to him the deepest secrets of our hearts.

God wants us to spend time in His presence. James 4:5 says “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us". God is pleased with the time we invest in His deed, but craves fervently and passionately for us to seek diligently His presence. We should never rush looking for His presence just seeking his favor, but we should run to the owner and giver of the favors loving to be in His Holy companionship.

Ecclesiastes 8:3 says “Do not be in a hurry to go ‘from’ his presence”. The King David yearned for the presence of God, he told “My soul wants and even becomes faint from wanting to be in the house of the Lord.” Psalms 84:2

I remember that at the end of a very busy week, after I have been working in God’s deed, supporting events, organizing seminaries, designing pamphlets for evangelism, printing bulletins, and spending hours in the computer organizing programs for the church; finally I felt empty! I did not know why!? Even though I worked with all my heart, something was wrong and I was not pleased, so, I wondered “why My Lord?” – God told me that I was very busy working in the “deed of God” that I have forgotten the “God of the deed”! He just told me: “You did so many things FOR ME that you forgot ABOUT ME”!

I understood that working for Him was a way to show Him my love, and this is true! BUT “when you love somebody you want to spend quality time with the person you love”. When I decreased my daily activity increasing my time in the Holy presence, my life was full of satisfaction and I found a real balance in my life.

The more we spend our time with the Lord, the more we will capture His spiritual language and be more sensitive to His voice. We will be able to give to others what we have received from the Lord during the time we spent with Him; so anyone who gets close to us will know right away that He dwells in us. May the Almighty God talk to us and may we be able to capture His voice. Amen.
