club last Thursday under the

watchful eye of casting directorand actress Deborah Ward.

Plans are afoot to make a trailer orteaser which will be used to raisefunds for a full-blown movie to beshot early next year.

In an email Shaw tells Gordon:

The synopsis looks very original,and the words for the teasereconomical, which I like.

Why describe what theaudience can see?Wish more writers would getthat.Shaw's road to stardom began

as ex-policeman and karateexpert Raymond Doyle in 70sTV classic The Professionals.Since then he has starred in a

string of television and stagehits winning a Tony nominationand a Drama Desk award forbest actor for his role as LordG o r i n g i n a B r o a d w a yproduction of Oscar Wildes AnIdeal Husband.

He is currently starring inclassic courtroom drama TwelveAngry Men in Birmingham.

His role (juror number 8) wasplayed by Henry Fonda in theHollywood 50s movie directedby the legendary Sidney Lumet.Shaw was approached byGordon when they both

attended a meeting of an Indianmeditational group in Bedford in thespring. They have both belonged tothe group since the 70s.

Other actors being considered fort h e m o v i e a r e B o l l y w o o dheartthrobs Shahid Kapoor who is

said to be looking to make the cross-over to western movies, and SurajSharma (Life of Pi).

The Fringe piece was written by well-known Indian playwright Pramilla le

Hunt who is highly regarded in Indianacting and literary circles.It featured Dilip Shankar as Nehru.

Shankar was instrumental in casting

Sharma in Life of Pi, directed by theaward-winning Ang Lee.

Gordons achievements include TVmovie Arthur C Clarke presents . . .The Colours of Infinity with anoriginal music score by David Gilmour

of Pink Floyd and a critically acclaimedshort entitled The MysteriousMichael A starring Nicholas Jones.

He wrote the obituary for TheGua r d i a n and other nat iona lnewspapers on the death of mathsvisionary Benot Mandlebrot one ofhis all-time heroes.

The teaser will begin filming nextmonth, also at the 606 in Lots Road.

Owner Steve Rubie, an experiencedjobbing actor, has auditioned for apart.

As well as casting director Deborah

Ward. a graduate of the LondonInternational School of PerformingArts in Bow, east London, will betaking up one of the supporting rolesin the teaser.

Gordon also shot 60s psychedelicband Pink Floyd as they signed up withrecording company EMI which hadalso snapped up the Beatles in theirearly days. He captured tragic SydBarrett 's crazy antics in theCambridge countryside on film beforehis (Barretts) untimely death in 2006.

In Gordons comic thriller Nothingand Everywhere the genesis for thefilm, John Smith, an unpublishednovelist, has his computer stolen and

with it the only copy of his latestnovel.

healthy as it sounds, a self-

styled crafter and writer

has warned.The claim comes as nine thousand

health freaks flocked to LondonsOlympia in Earls Court last weekend

for the massively popular Vegfest UKshow.

More than 100 stalls displayed theirwares from meat free hot dogs,through ethical clothes and shoes, tosoap free washing-up liquid.

A vegan cupcake is cruelty free,and it might contain fewer saturated

fats than a conventionalcupcake, but one thing itdefinitely is not is healthfood, Becky Striepe, who

lives in the US, said.And she added: Many

varieties of potato chips(crisps) are totally free ofanimal products.Does that mean that theyare healthy? No way!Potato chips (crisps) aredeep fried and then dousedwith salt and artificialflavouring.

That sort of food is just not goodfor your body.

And she sets out five of her worstoffenders:crispscupcakes, cookies, pies and sweetschips (French fries)packaged granola barscrescent roll or biscuit dough.

She goes on to advise: The trick isto kick the processed food habit.

That even means cutting down on

packaged organic snacks. If youregoing to choose processed foods,picking cruelty-free, organic snacks isbetter for the planet, but chances areits no better for your body than itsconventional cousins.

TWELVE Indus

dolphins have been

spotted in the

River Beas in the

Punjab in India

after a six year

absence.The animals, an

endangered species, were

seen in a single sighting bywildlife officials.

They were swimming inthree groups in a 75 kmstretch of the Beas around60 kilometers from thePunjabi capital, Amritsar.

That part of the river includes the three kilometrelong Harike wildlife sanctuary.

Divisional forest officer M Sudhagar told reporters:With this single sighting we can estimate that theirnumber could be around two dozen in and around thesanctuary.

The Indus dolphin (platanista minor) is one of theworlds rarest mammals and most endangeredcetaceans.

It is found only in thisstretch of Indian water.As well as dolphins about

1,100 similar uniquespecies exist in the lowerreaches of the Indus River.Though that number has

drastically declined sincethe construction of dams

on the river recently.This sighting comes sixyears after officials fromthe Harike sanctuaryspotted a pair offreshwater dolphins for thefirst time in the country at

the confluence of Beas and Satluj rivers.As the word spread, the government said it would

launch a conservation project for dolphins and develop

the area as a major tourist spot, but work on this hasyet to begin.

Monthly monitoring is being conducted jointly by

teams of World Wide Fund for Nature and Harikewildlife sanctuary.

I am sure his own religious or non-religious beliefs would have affectedhis judgement.

I am a member of a protestant Christian church and as such I find thatthere is no conflict with intellectual achievement.

In fact, many of our members and pastors are highly intellectual withgood brains and a grasp of the issues of life.

DOZENS of west Londoncharities have thrown their

hats in the ring to buy theiconic London Lighthouse inthe wake of the recentsurprise announcement thatit was up for sale for 1.6m.

The building on Lancaster Road,W11, shot to world-wide prominencein 1996 when the late princess Dianavisited people living with AIDShoused on the first floor.

In a revolutionary and well-publicised move she shook handswith a resident when the condition

Yue Yue also adds:Id like to be the new babys friend.Then I could go to Bu-Kin-Han Palace and play withhim.He is undecided if China should have a monarchytoo, saying:I dont know, Im a child, not the Queen!

When asked, he provides a long list of activities hethinks the Queen spends her time on, including

comfortable, polite, clean, delicious, second-to-none!

monarch at all -Its understandable in Japan, theyre not aEuropean country- the ideal of carrying on tradition andupholding heritage through keeping the monarchy washonourable, they thought.

However, while most Chinese people seem to be inagreement that relapsing into monarchy would beillogical, a surprising opinion emerged from severalindividuals (who, for safetys sake, are not included in thisarticle.) When asked if they thought that Chinas currentpolitical infrastructure (a single party and, on paper, asocialist republic) would be better off being scrappedand replaced with a monarch, many disagreed andfurthermore, thought that amultiparty system would bebetter than the current situation.

The idea of being able to vote for a leader seemed toappeal to many people - and not just the younger citizens

either. The openness with which this opinion was sharedis surprising considering that speaking out against theParty in the past was considered high treason and hasearned many individuals political prisoner status.

While its probably safe to say that China has put itsmonarchical days behind it, nevertheless ina countrywhere protest against the Party is strictly forbidden, thisopen rejection ofdictatorship is, perhaps,just one of thenew things being imported from the West and possibly awindow into a very different future for China.

Oldies re-united inA HUNDRED friends gathered in a

quiet Bedfordshire village recently to

celebrate a very special occasion and

have the time of their lives.

For four of their number had reached

a landmark of achievement - their

70th journey around the sun!

And to celebrate the notable

occasion the quartet hired a village

hall, booked top-flight caterers andput on a lovingly prepared home-made

entertainment programme to

celebrate with their mates.

At the request ofFriends Gazette,one of the birthday revellers, film-

maker and author Nigel Lesmoir-

Gordon, (pictured above), reports.

ON Sunday, 1st September atClophill Village Hall, four old' tea-total friends celebrated their 70thyear in this world.

The friends were Nigel and JennyLesmoir-Gordon, Roger Whelan and

Brett Funnell.To make the biggest possible splashthey decided to pool their resourcesso that the best of catering andentertainment could be provided fortheir one hundred guests.

Vegetarian food was supplied by theLondon caterers Passage to India andthe high point of the entertainment

by Birmingham Indian dance troupe,Sansaar.Jennys dream was to have a

Bhangra workshop for everyone tojoin in. Brilliant! Roger MC'd with alittle help from his son, Conor.

After a splendid munch it was time

to work off some heat and theBhangra troupe hit the stage. Theyperformed on their own and then theparty people took to the floor forhelpful instruction and some full-ondancing. It got everybody going!

The friends then set aboutproviding their own in-houseentertainment. First off, Roger W and

Vicky Pitman sang two duets: TheWrinkly Song and Side-by-Side.Then Robbie Derrick and Conorcrooned the old 60s favourite by JoniMitchell - The Circle Game withgreat keyboards from James Watson.

Then Nigels son, Gabriel, (pictured

over) took to the stage. He gave amoving tribute to his old dad: TheSarge, and introduced Nigels duetwith Elvis (taped) - a hip-swingingblast of All Shook Up.

Clare Whelan then read from TheGhost Orchid by Michael Longley inher best Northern Irish brogue.

Elisabeth (Brett) Funnell gave us her

Next up was Robbie D again, thistime with Maggie Partington Smith,and a personalised rendition ofI want to be like you from the JungleBook film.

The entertainment ended with acouple of numbers on guitar fromtalented Chris Frost, one being theold folk favourite Stagger Lee.

Then came The Tea with a mostgorgeous assortment of cakes. Sadlythe party finished around six oclock.

The majority of guests reluctantlydrifted away homewards whilst thehall with its decorations, which hadtaken five hours to put up, wascleared away in less than an hour by adozen willing helpers.
